I've been rewatching the 2003 TMNT series for the first time in almost 20 years and it kills me to see people complaining about Leo not getting a cool weapon from the spirit forge like his brothers did. Personally I would have cried if he had gotten a new weapon because guys.

GUYS.

This was his spirit forge.

For those who don't remember, the Foot ninjas not only ambushed poor Leo in The Shredder Strikes Back episodes, but they took his katanas. Leo's injuries were severe enough to send him into a coma and although he woke up from it in Tales of Leo, his recovery was not complete until the episode Monster Hunter. This episode mostly focused on Donnie and Mikey getting into trouble at the Jones' farm, but the subplot is centered around Leo's continued recovery.

And guess who was there to help him through it all?

Raph, who is considered to have a very combative relationship with Leo, was the one to stick by his side and help him forge his katanas. Those swords are not only symbols of Leo's resilience, but of the bonds of brotherhood. The scene where they forge the katanas together in silence is truly one of the most tender moments in the entire series.

And sure, Leo eventually used Gunshin after Karanji gave it to him and said that it truly belonged to him, but you know what? I think he was lying. I think that he trusted Leo enough to let him wield his weapon from the spirit forge and knew that Leo wouldn't take Gunshin from him otherwise. And maybe there was some pity there too, since Karanji was the last person to draw a weapon from the spirit forge before Leo's failed attempt. And sure, Leo wasn't gonna get a weapon from the spirit forge because how else were the writers going to continue the themes of Leo overcoming adversity and rejection?

But I personally like to believe that the spirit forge went out on its own because it couldn't offer any weapon more precious than the one he made with his brother.

Concept: the turtles are used to speaking to each other in Japanese around non-family (like Casey and April) when they want to talk without other people understanding. This is usually fine but one time they tease Leo about his crush on Usagi in Japanese in front of Usagi, completely forgetting that Usagi does, in fact, speak Japanese.

Asdfgjfksha Usagi would just respond back to them in Japanese and leo would be so mortified

Usagis friends (especially Gen) do the same thing when leo is visiting so it's even

omfg on the bus I remembered something funny Mike told me at KawaiiKon. He was saying that Leo picked the scooter as a NOBLE SACRIFICE for his brothers so none of them would have to get stuck with it. I just about burst out laughing on the bus, I can’t believe I forgot that.

Leo kinda makes sword fighting look like dancing he so showy and flashy like Mikey while Raph and Don seem more what the word for it? Grounded?

Sorry this took me forever to answer. My brain has been fried lately. Thanks for the ask!

I mean, I think they can all be pretty showy at times and probably enjoy a bit of friendly competition in terms of their fighting abilities and skills with their weapons (Raph doesn't NEED to twirl his sai as much as he does lol). But where Raph and Donnie may see their skills a bit more practically, Leo I think sees it as an art form. Much like ballet, it's a skill that as you master allows you to then focus more on the presentation and flow of the movements, the emotions the movements evoke. There's that next level to mastery that goes beyond doing something correctly; you learn to do it beautifully. If that makes sense, not sure I have the best words for it right now.

And then Mikey is Mikey. He's a showman and takes pride in his skills. He's naturally athletic and has high energy so he has fun with his ninjitsu abilities.

2012 TMNT really put Leo through the ringer. This was, essentially, him in the beginning of season 3:

And somehow, the writers fully expected its audience to just accept that Leo’s injury was all in his head.
