"I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me." — Joshua Graham
Status: Real (although often slightly misquoted)
Context: Joshua Graham is a character from the 2010 video game Fallout: New Vegas. Graham was the co-founder and first Legate of Caesar’s Legion until, after leading his troops to a humiliating defeat in battle, Caesar had him executed. In Graham’s words: “I failed Caesar and he had me burned alive, thrown into the Grand Canyon.” When asked how he survived, Graham responds: “I survived because the fire inside burned brighter than the fire around me. I fell down into that dark chasm, but the flame burned on and on. The next morning, I woke up and crawled out of the northern edge of the Grand Canyon, that cursed place. It took me three months to reach New Canaan. It was as though the prodigal son had returned. They welcomed me like I had never left, never done anything to shame them. The fire that had kept me alive was love. Their love. God's love. I will never be able to repay the debt I owe to them, but I must try.”

"Be groovy or leave, man." — Bob Dylan
Status: Real
Context: The quote is from a scene in Dont Look Back (1967), a documentary which follows Bob Dylan’s 1965 tour of England. Dylan is in a hotel room with a large group of people, and is frustrated because someone threw a glass onto the street. He and someone else in the room get into an argument over who did it. In an attempt to calm them down, one of the other people in the room tells them to “Be groovy,” to which Dylan responds: “Yeah, either be groovy or leave, man. You don't have to be groovy for me. Just be groovy for anybody who you want to be groovy for.”
