Realistic Characters?

Name one time that you asked for a writing advice and they didn't say "make your characters realistic". We all heard that, we all know that but How? How to make something fictional, from the imagination, realistic? It's easy actually but as a great author once said, "common sense ain't that common"

First, look at yourself and those around you. Think of everything that's related to you, what you like, what you hate, fears, dreams, hope and all that. From the food you like to your deepest secrets. See all of that, this what makes something realistic. The imperfection and the small details that matters. Now this applies for the MC, not every character there should have all these layers.

Build a real person, from childhood, how they lived their childhood, what kind of a child they were. Challenges and difficulties they went through that made theme the person they are. Give them insecurities and flaws but also give them good traits. Maybe they're kind and heroic but they lie because they could be insecure about something or not wanting to be a burden. Or let's say the MC is more of bad person or a little bit morally gray. They lie, they could be selfish or even kill but maybe they killed one person to stop ten from dying. Try to keep it balanced, don't go extra over there.

Second, they should fuck up at least once. Like the previous point, no one is perfect and people make mistakes due to lack of information, not enough experience or misbelief. Give them moments where they make those mistakes or wrong decisions but also give them moments when they do the right thing and be smart.

Thirdly, understand their personality. If you struggle with that then try the MBTI, there are 16 personality type that you can chose from and play around a little to fit your character. Understanding the personality will help you give them realistic flaws, fears and the heroic traits. For example one character is stubborn, this would lead them into falling into mistakes because they refuse to listen to others but at the same time they're very committed to reach their goal no matter what.

Last but not least, emotions. As long as you're creating a creature that breaths means they have emotions unless it's a robot and no one likes to follow an emotionless protagonist who only knows how to be angry. Let them live emotions, all kinds. Pain, happiness, sadness, doubts, maybe even love. That's what we do in real life. We love, we cry, we laugh and all. So give that to your characters.
