i. love. characters that are so paranoid and distrustful of others pushing past that distrust because of a raw desire for connection and affection

knowing logically that they're safest if they isolate themselves, but on the inside, so badly wanting to just be with someone who cares

every touch for years has brought pain, but someone offers a hug and their heart is torn in two, half of them retreating to avoid it and half of them wanting desperately for it to be real

the human equivalent of an abused rescue animal finally letting their new person pet them

that crack in their defenses, that step off the edge of total shut-down safety, that last scrap of hope left saying one last try

The sun has only just finished setting when the car rolls to a stop, and Nile can't get out faster.

"Desmond! Joe! Nicky!" she yells, shouldering her duffle and beelining for the front door. "You guys better be here!"

There's no response, nothing, barely even a breeze.

"Hey," Desmond says, easy as you please, from right behind her.

Nile reacts as she has been trained, turning her startle into a spin and lashing out with a quick jab that Desmond easily blocks. The follow up knife, too, he sways out of the way and disarms her, though she's not really trying anymore. "You motherfucker! You scared the shit out of me! Where the hell did you come from?"

Both of them chuckling, she kicks out at Des one last time just for good measure. She expects him to dodge.

Desmond does not dodge. Nor does he let her connect. Instead, he kicks her raised ankle higher, steps in, and next thing she knows the sky is above her and she's landing flat on her back in the dirt. Then he has the gall to offer her a hand up. "I was in the trees, watching you come in."

The trees. He was always in the trees.

"God, you're such a fucking arsehole," she grumbles, contemplating his hand. For a moment, she thinks about dragging him down with her, but the others have already gone in and areprobably waiting. She lets him pull her to her feet. "It's good to see you, man."

"Yeah, you too." He might even be smiling, just a llittle.
