Reflections on: Master Detective Archives - RAIN CODE+
Well, I teased that something like this was coming back in this year’s gaming journal, didn’t I? Now that I’ve gotten every achievement in the game and consumed all of the additional content, it’s time for me to go into further specifics when it comes to this game. That being said, there’s obviously going to be spoilers for Rain Code itself in this write-up, but given the connections it has to…

this is the Yakou furio post ever
Love love love characters that present themselves as emotionally open social butterflies but the more you see of them the more obvious it is that they’re the most closed off fuckers in the story. Sure, they want to help you with your personal problems and messy emotions, but if you turn that shit back on them, they’ll shut down or deflect every time. Why are you sticking your nose in their business anyway? It’s not like it matters. They’re not a person, they’re just a role being played. They’re the guy who fixes things and saves people. Please ignore the man behind the mask, he’s fine. Everything’s fine.

question for rain code nation
If the supposed potential sequel comes to pass, what motifs (specifically weather or environment related) are you hoping they’ll run with? Rain code was rain, obviously, and it was so key to the aesthetic and so deeply a part of the environment and culture I hope they do something similar in the future
seeing the epilogue in a broad daylight setting with lots of palm trees makes me hope for the sun? Something bright and intense to contrast the dark gloom in rain code

what's your favourite thing about raincode? such as gameplay, setting, characters, etc
OOH what a question. If I had to pick just one thing I’d say characters. Coming from the Danganronpa games that I liked for similar reasons, I’m huge on media with a lot of different funky guys to think about.
however close second is the aesthetics. The look of kanai ward and even the train and other settings is so detailed and so iconic. I say aesthetics and not visuals because the music is just as good. No setting fell flat for me.
The mysteries are fun of course, and I do love the gameplay of the ML, but if I was held at gunpoint and forced to pick like 2 things those would be it. Really I love everything. The plot is so good too,,, and the twists and everything else

Who’s your current fav Rain Code character?
hard tie between Seth and Vivia. Kind of depends on my mood but I love them both. Behind them is probably Halara, then maybe Makoto? I also like Yuma and Shinigami. Also Zilch but whether it’s real or Hitman zilch depends on my mood and what headcanons im feeling. I like character-centric media because I can hoard favorites like a dragon

Been thinking about why chapter 3 felt weaker to me than the other chapters and I think I figured it out? This is just my thoughts and they aren’t very planned out
Spoilers for the whole game btw
The case itself is fine, actually. Originally I thought it was this that made it feel weak but it doesn’t, I liked the case. There were a few things I would have changed to make the motivation for it more logical (to us as players) but it wasn’t as bad as i think a lot of people claim.
What really bothers me is the fact that they pulled the “oh no the entire detective agency is gone <\3” card way too early. Why don’t I like this? A couple reasons
1. It diminishes the effect in chapter 5 when it tries to pull the “everyone is dead” thing again. Minor thing, since I don’t think we were meant to believe it too strongly anyways (it was more of a way to force Yuma to act alone than to scare us into thinking they really died), but worth mentioning.
2. I love rain code; but the entire time I feel like it was missing just one more chapter where the detectives were all together. Given the pacing and plot, I don’t think adding a whole new chapter would remedy this. Instead I believe chapter 3 would have been a perfect moment to let the group be together and working normally before it all goes to shit in chapter 4
3. Going off of 2, as hard as chapter 4 hurt, it would have been even better if Yuma weren’t so isolated right before it. Give us more Yakou moments, to really drive home his absence afterwards
4. If we weren’t running around trying to find the other detectives, we instead could have used that time to flesh out or just introduce more mysteries (thinking the blank week mystery specifically) instead of so much being thrown onto us in chapter 5. The resistance would actually be perfect for introducing the blank week mystery. since they go against the norm of kanai ward I imagine they’d be less hellbent on keeping it under wraps.
Idk overall I actually don’t dislike chapter 3. On playing the game again it’s fine, it’s just weirdly distant from the nocturnal detective agency and as someone who doesn’t care much for the resistance, it was less memorable because of it. I think the weaknesses in the investigation and case could be significantly more forgivable if we had our favorites around to carry a little bit more of the exposition

Rain Coo’d AU part 2, peacekeeper pigeons
I’m back with more birds.
Also note: forgot if I mentioned this before, but I’m sticking to domestic breeds.
Yomi: Archangel pigeon. Copper black wing coloration. Anything online that says these birds are sweet and docile is lying. They’re pricks. Source: I have them. I’ve never had a breed that started more fights in my loft than these. They range from mildly skittish to “throwing down with birds twice their size for no fucking reason”. They also look like him in a way I can’t describe.

Martina: Serbian highflyer. Elegant but also a flyer breed and thus pretty tough and competent. I imagine her as a dilute, maybe an ash red or blue dilute, but it’s hard to find pictures of them. Might draw it to show u all the vision.

Seth: English trumpeter pigeon. Ironic because these guys are named for the funny loud sounds they make. They also have weird bird bangs and a worried look in their eyes. Not settled 100% on color but leaning towards almond.

Guillaume: this one stumped me for a bit. I was stuck between a Chinese owl or a figurita. Both of them are small, but in temperament she’s definitely a figurita. They’re energetic little bastards, and one of the smallest breeds of domestic pigeon. Perfect contrast for Dominic. I haven’t settled on a color yet, I might have to draw her first.

Dominic: Giant runt pigeon. He strikes me as a splash. They are the largest domestic pigeon breed. A tank of a bird with a mellow personality. I can’t imagine him as anything else.

Swank: White garden fantail. A baller kind of bird with presence. Hard to put into words, just look at them, they’re a very swank bird. If I gave it a gold coat and a cigar it’d be impossible to tell the difference. All white might feel plain for him but that’s the point, makes his accessories stand out better.

Bonus
The nun: nun pigeon. Get it? Hehehe.

Nocturnal detective agency pigeon Yuma and Vivia. I want to do digital colored vers of all my designs for them but for now here’s some doodles.
U know how I always say im not super confident in my human art? It’s because im a bird artist. This may come as a surprise to none. drawing birds in funny outfits is my speciality. also @rindragon-from-twewy tagged this as master detective archives rain coo’d and I can’t get it out of my head. It’s so perfect and that’s what I’m going to call this au now
