I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip
Using a random fic of mine as example..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The left example: ✅✅✅
The right example: ❌❌❌
Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!
If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…

"In the fourth vote, the ballots overwhelmingly shifted" to Cardinal Prevost, Cardinal You of South Korea said.
Cardinal Müller sat behind the American front-runner in the Sistine Chapel and noticed that he seemed calm. Cardinal Tagle, who sat next to Cardinal Prevost, noticed him taking deep breaths as votes amassed in his favor.
"I asked him, 'Do you want a candy?' and he said, 'Yes'," Cardinal Tagle said.
During one of the votes, Cardinal Tobin, as he held his ballot high and put it in the urn, turned and saw Cardinal Prevost, whom he had known for about 30 years.
"I took a look at Bob," Cardinal Tobin said, "and he had his head in his hands."
-- A fascinating inside-the-Sistine-Chapel look at the Conclave that elected Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, via the New York Times.
I love the image of one Cardinal offering candy to another Cardinal who is trying not to hyperventilate because he realizes he's about to be elected Pope.

Introducing your new favorite animal of the deep—the wonderful whalefish.
Whalefish live in the inky depths below 3,000 feet called the midnight zone. Their eyes are poorly developed and small—in fact, they lack lenses and are not even capable of forming images. Instead, they rely on a network of sensory pores to feel vibrations in the water and allow the whalefish to detect when predators or prey are near.
Like many deep-sea animals, whalefishes have a brilliant reddish coloration. Red light doesn’t travel far in seawater and can’t penetrate into the deep sea, so anything red appears black. This intense red color helps a whalefish disappear into the darkness to ambush unsuspecting prey or avoid a hungry predator.
Most research on these fishes has been based on specimens collected by deep-water trawl nets. MBARI’s remotely operated vehicles very rarely encounter these obscure fishes. In the more than 30,000 hours of video MBARI’s ROVs have recorded, we’ve logged just 16 observations. But each time we see one, we get a chance to learn more about this remarkable resident of the ocean’s midnight zone.

while we're talking about it this is your friendly PSA that uncharacteristic friendliness and lack of fear of humans is just as much of a sign of a rabies infection as overt aggression. and if you're bitten by a wild animal (or have any reason to believe you were unknowingly bitten ex. bats found in your home) DO NOT TAKE THE FUCKING RISK.
