Conversation

Poem: Geflüster der Nacht (Whispers of the Night)
Author: Theodor Storm
Transcript:

In Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, Eva Marie Saint had to re-dub a particular line during post-production to satisfy censors. The original line was “I never make love on an empty stomach”, but was changed to “I never discuss love on an empty stomach” (x). Interestingly, Cary Grant has almost the exact same line where he talks about making love to a woman, yet the censors had no problem with this at all. It just goes to show that if a woman is sexually objectified by a man, it is considered perfectly normal. But when a woman sexually objectifies a man, or even remotely indicates an interest in sex, now that’s just offensive. It is reminiscent of Gillian Anderson’s exchange with a male coworker in The BBC’s The Fall.
