Am 23.07. wurde die 15. Vertragsstaatenkonferenz der internationalen Feuchtgebietskonvention (Ramsar COP 15) durch den Präsidenten von Simbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa offiziell eröffnet. Die Eröffnung war hochrangig besetzt, neben den Regierungschefs aus Malawi und Eswatini waren einige Länder, u.a. Indien, China, Venezuela, Südafrika und Serbien auf Ministerebene vertreten. Außerdem waren die Direktor*innen vieler internationaler Konventionen anwesend, u.a. der CBD, CITES und CMS. Die Wichtigkeit von internationaler und übergreifender Zusammenarbeit im Feuchtgebietsschutz für eine lebenswerte Zukunft wurde wiederholt betont.

Am Abend zuvor wurden die Jugendvertreter*innen auf der Konferenz vom Gastland Simbabwe zu einem Youth Welcome Dinner eingeladen und wurden dort mit einem eigens für die Konferenz geschriebenen Lied begrüßt.

On July 23, the 15th Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar COP 15) was officially opened by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The opening ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including the heads of government of Malawi and Eswatini, as well as ministers from several countries, including India, China, Venezuela, South Africa, and Serbia. The directors of many international conventions were also present, including the CBD, CITES, and CMS. The importance of international and cross-border cooperation in wetland conservation for a livable future was repeatedly emphasized.

The evening before, the youth representatives at the conference were invited to a Youth Welcome Dinner by the host country Zimbabwe, where they were greeted with a song written especially for the conference.

Am Dienstag besuchte die deutsche Delegation das Ramsar Gebiet Victoria Falls. Die Victoriafälle sind ihrer Einzigartigkeit entsprechend als Feuchtgebiet von internationaler Bedeutung ausgezeichnet und zudem ein Weltnaturerbe unter der UNESCO. Die angrenzende Stadt Victoria Falls setzt sich für den Erhalt dieser so wichtigen Feuchtgebiete ein und involviert dabei auch die lokale Bevölkerung. Daher wurde sie zu Beginn der Konferenz zusammen mit weiteren 30 Städten weltweit als "Wetland City" ausgezeichnet. Dieses Engagement ist hier im südlichen Teil Afrikas überlebenswichtig, denn die durch den Klimawandel immer häufiger auftretenden Dürren setzen Natur und Menschen stark zu. Feuchtgebiete helfen solche Extremwetterereignisse abzumildern.

Auch in Deutschland können die Natur und die Bevölkerung von der Integration von Feuchtgebietsschutz in urbane Räume profitieren. Ich bin gespannt, ob auch eine deutsche Stadt bei der nächsten COP als „Wetland City“ ausgezeichnet wird.

On Tuesday, the German delegation visited the Victoria Falls Ramsar site. Due to their uniqueness, the Victoria Falls have been designated a wetland of international importance and are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The neighboring city of Victoria Falls is committed to the preservation of these important wetlands and also involves the local population in the process. This is why it was named a “Wetland City” at the start of the conference, along with 30 other cities worldwide. This commitment is vital here in the southern part of Africa, as the increasingly frequent droughts caused by climate change are severely affecting nature and people. Wetlands help to mitigate such extreme weather events.

In Germany, too, nature and the population can benefit from the integration of wetland protection in urban areas. I am curious to see whether a German city will also be recognized as a “Wetland City” at the next COP.

What is the International Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention)? The International Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) is the oldest global nature conservation agreement and aims to protect and sustainably use wetlands. Wetlands are diverse and include lakes, rivers and floodplains as well as peatlands and coral reefs. In Germany, 35 wetlands are recognized as being of international importance. The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention takes place every three years; this year in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. As at the Climate COP or the Biodiversity COP, all parties to the Convention come together to discuss the implementation and further development of their work program and to pass resolutions on individual topics. I will report on the COP via this channel. In order to strengthen youth participation, the states parties were encouraged at the last COP to consider appointing a Youth Focal Point, among other things. I have now taken on this voluntary position for two years and will now have the opportunity to attend the COP live for the first time.
