It’s been a few days since the Kyubi attack. It’s after midnight and Kakashi is standing on the balcony of an orphanage, looking into the nursery. Strangely there’s only one cot in the small bare room but there’s no mistaking the golden head of hair peeking out from under the blankets, just barely visible under the pale moonlight. Kakashi’s been standing there for all of 2 second when a small whimper is heard from the cot followed by soft mewling cries. He quickly ducks in case one of the caretakers showed up. But after more than 5 minutes have passed and there had yet to be anyone coming by, with the cries getting louder, Kakashi finally peeks out from under the window sill before climbing in. He takes one look at the tiny thing in the cot -a spitting image of Minato- and feels a deep well of sadness surge inside him.

“Naruto”, he thinks to himself. Remembering his Sensei excitedly telling his students about the name just a few weeks ago. Kakashi had been unamused at the time. A ramen topping? Not even one of the good ones either. But Rin had piped in that it sounded perfect and Kakashi didn’t want to be a downer. Now that he’s looking down at the small bundle, it strangely seemed to fit. Gently, though hesitantly, he picks up the fussing Naruto who’s cries quieted down just a bit into wet sniffles.

“Don’t cry Naruto”, Kakashi says in a small whisper. Gingerly rocking the fragile bundle from side to side. He has absolutely no idea what he’s doing but this seemed to be what mothers did all the time right? Naruto opens his eyes and Kakashi feels his heart ache at the sight of the familiar baby blue. His cries had stopped but there was a downturn to his lips and the look he gave Kakashi made the teen wonder if Naruto knew. That he somehow knew that his parents were gone and he was all alone.

Kakashi blinks to hold back the tears welling in his eyes and he pulls Naruto closer to his chest. Grateful that he had the forethought of going home to take off his equipment first before coming. “It’s ok Naruto”, Kakashi soothes, “You’re not alone. We’ll look after you ok. I promise”.

Kakashi is 14 years old and has been a chunin since he was 6. He’d been pulled to fight in a war by the time he was 12, had almost lost both his teammates in said war by the end of it and now had nothing left of the man who’d been like a father to him but this small baby sleeping curled ever so slightly against his chest. Kakashi is 14 and a small part of him wonders if it’s normal that he’s had to live through so much so young. But as he carefully puts Naruto back into his cot and tucks the blanket around him, he realizes with striking clarity that it didn’t matter. Because this was a promise he was going to keep. No matter what
