Paul's body language listening to Beautiful Boy and what I think is Paul's greatest tragedy

I had to capture Paul's body language while listening to Beautiful Boy as one of his choices on Desert Island Discs in 1982. He says the song is 'very moving' for him—you can listen to the whole thing here and watch the actual video captured in these gifs here.

Desert Island Discs is a radio programme, so I wonder if Paul wasn’t expecting cameras, or perhaps he knew there would be one but wasn’t prepared for his own emotional response once the song started playing. His body language is incredibly poignant to watch, and while I'm no expert, this feels like the rawest I've ever seen him captured on film, even more so than the most difficult parts of Get Back/Let It Be.

It starts when the songs starts playing: his eyes are everywhere, and he puffs his cheeks and bites his lips. He clearly knows the lyrics, you can tell througout this video that he does, but he keeps himself from singing along out loud.

Then, when John sings, “And your daddy’s here,” he puffs his cheeks again and fully turns his back to the camera to collect himself, flicking his hair, and starts rocking back and forth.

His eye are EVERYWHERE at that point, with some more hair flicks. Also, you can't hear in the gif, but there's a second or two of him tapping along with his hands on a table or his thighs, perhaps in discomfort or a nervious tick, and then he stops.

And just when you think he’s composed himself, he turns his back to the camera again and stays like that for a good while. To clarify, the show’s host is sitting right next to him, shoulder-to-shoulder and elbow-to-elbow on Paul’s right, but Paul is clearly avoiding eye contact and communication altogether.

This continues for several more seconds until John sings, “It’s getting better and better.” That's a hint to Paul's own line from Sgt. Pepper, I think we can all agree to that. Then, the camera operator—perhaps taking pity or simply doing their job well—pans the camera and focuses on something even more telling; after tapping along and swiveling, he's now hugging himself.

And that's when the camera cuts, thankfully. I can imagine this is exactly how he must have spent hours in the early eighties, listening to Double Fantasy and the Real Love/Free as a Bird/Now and Then demos and taking it all in.

And herein lies what I think is Paul's greatest tragedy: if, as he's claimed for decades, they were never knowingly or consciously romantically or physically involved while John was alive, I wonder if the understanding of what they actually had crept up on him after John's death, especially in moments like these. It could be argued that it's reflected in songs and lyrics throughout his solo career—a progression of moments, memories, and conversations, all deciphered and processed in a new light.

How heartbreaking.

I’ve recently logged back onto this account after abandoning it and found my old posts about mclennon lol. Can’t believe it’s been 4 years! I truly wonder if we’ll ever get to see if this is true because she’s still alive lol.

I remember when I first saw this there were comments, saying it’s Paul and John but now there’s no comments? Or is it just not showing up for me?

Has anyone seen/known this or know about Crazy Days & Nights?

It’ll be an interesting time if the day ever comes where she’s no longer here but Paul still is. Whether or not we see it all depends on who passes first…

@bambi-kinos I’m not sure about who posted the ones that came true (as you seem to imply that “Enty” was more reliable in the past than a “reader”) but the website has gotten some right in the past. I’ve heard that CDAN has become unreliable lately (not sure since when) but the post I screenshotted was 6 yrs ago so not sure if that mindset applies necessarily.

Apparently they also change things up to not make it obvious (explaining the prostitution thing). I haven’t been into the whole Mclennon rabbit hole in a while so could you fill me in or link a post about who “Blue Fox” is and when they said whatever they did?

As for the brick thing, I’m not too sure about whether that’s true or not. I just remember when I went down the mclennon rabbit hole (4 years ago) a mclennon expert (someone on here who was super informed and knowledgeable) mentioned something like that happening in one of their posts. So I thought “oh this is all adding up!”

And ya Paul did say he had some things he couldn’t say until Yoko or Cynthia were gone. I won’t lie, the CDAN post really got me believing mclennon was really a thing to some degree, but I guess we’ll eventually see what he’s got to say if he outlives Yoko (or maybe we’ll find out anyways if she passes after him and he leaves someone trusted to publish something he wrote)

It’s kinda crazy that we may find out whether this is true or not in the next coming years though!

Does anyone have the Beliza timeline? Really curious how it all came to be. When did people start suspecting that they were together? and did the fanbase always feel like they had a unique chemistry?

Unpopular opinion: you can find someone interesting and remember them without being attracted to them in that way. I believe mclennon was real but not that early on. I don’t even think Paul is bisexual, I think John was his exception because those things do exist. I could be wrong though, maybe he is bi but that’s just my take on it.

I find mclennon so interesting because weirdly enough, I relate to it. It’s comforting to know there’s a true story out there similar to mine. I had a friendship that was just something else, it’s unexplainable, it wasn’t a normal friendship. Funny enough I knew who she was before I befriended her because I saw her around and thought she looked interesting and cool, just like Paul. I’m straight and still consider myself straight even after realizing 6 years after our friendship I developed such a strong love for her that it turned romantic. She was truly special and the connection I had with her. Once you love someone, everything about them becomes beautiful so their gender doesn’t matter. Again, exceptions exist.

honestly can we talk about the times paul saw john before fete? How he recognizes him in the fish and chips queue, not because he knows john has a band or anything, but just because he finds him really attractive and you don’t forget someone that attractive 👀

I know this is just fictional to an extent but this is what I’m getting from this Mclennon scene and how it reminds me of that crazy days and nights post about mclennon:

In the crazy days and night post it says that they were estranged for the late halves of their lives and if you’ve watched the “Two Of Us” miniseries about John and Paul we can see especially in this video that they clearly have their own separate lives, they’re not young adults anymore, they have their families, John has Yoko and Paul is realizing it here so he leaves. In the car Paul talks to Linda and in a way, to me it feels like he’s trying to get back to his reality by calling Linda and telling her he loves her. I have a feeling in the scene after ending the call with Linda he’s thinking about how he already has his own life, he loves Linda but still loves John and knows John is with Yoko and clearly he’s unhappy.

It’s one of those moments where you’re in love with someone who’s already in a relationship, but you’re also in a relationship with someone too and you know it’s not possible when you both have already built separate lives. It’s like Paul got caught up in the moment hanging out with John but then realized they both have separate lives. Truly sad. Am I right or am I right? I HAVE A FEELING THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THIS MINISERIES KNOW ABOUT MCLENNON BUT DONT WANNA BLATANTLY CONFIRM IT. I’m pretty sure they told the actors to act with romantic undertones.
