Cataloguing some of the apps on my phone on this sideblog in case they’re gonna be taken off the store in a year if they aren’t gone already (or just because at think they’re neat). Mostly videogames because that’s what makes up 90% of my phone.I’m not an editor or writer of any kind, I’m just a random user, so my posts will inadvertently be of varying quality.

ROTATE
made by Lemon Jam Studio, published by Ketchapp
not available anymore, but its successor OOOO (or ROTATE_ZEN) is
You click the screen to make the square fly off rotating circles in order to collect points, all while dodging spikes and screen walls that will kill you on collision. If you survive for long enough, you can turn on slow-mo for a short while.
The game's an endless "runner", while its still-available light theme-looking successor OOOO has levels and worlds.
And that's pretty much it!

"I downloaded a bunch of neat looking games off the appstore", part 2:
FlatMachine
A game where you play a lil surveillance robot in a post-apocalyptic world trying to make sure its village can survive for 70 days before it inadvertently gets mowed down for good.
Each day you have to choose what action to take so you can protect them while simultaneously surviving yourself. Mostly by trying to survive fights or talking with npcs that show up throughout the days.
There's at least seven endings to get, a level up system to unlock new items if you complete a loop (or kick the bucket), and cool implied world building!
(Also turns out I already know this dev from another game, Parasite Days, where you try to survive/befriend the parasite in your arm that's actively killing you (she doesn't mean to tho so it's fine))
Doing simple gameplay with health + item management and a focus on a story set in an apocalypic world where the ending is dependent on your choices seems to be this dev's Thing. There's a cooking one too!

Re, "the App store is more similar to Steam in its game catalogue than people want to admit, including that you can find some pretty nifty obscure games if you just look past the popular games section":

Went on a download Spree. Granted they're all free and first two are Old games I re-downloaded again, but the rest is all maybe-translated Japanese indie games.
Started playing Starchild and can confirm it's a cute little game!
Somewhere between a platform action game and roguelite? With a bit of bullet hell on the side?
The attacks are automatic, the gameplay comes from figuring out when to equip which of the many weapons (and other equipment) you can find + running and jumping around to hit enemies without getting hit yourself, all to make it to the other side of the screen and to the bosses. (It's a lot more chill than it sounds, though it can get hectic when many enemies are around.)
You lose your items and start back in the first level if you die, but get to restock, teleport to already beaten sections, etc.
It also has secrets! I already found a secret boss! :D
Anyways, cool game so far, very fun, occasional ad since it *is* completely free but it's Offline you can just go into Flight Mode or disable internet for it.

Labyrinth Legend
A Hack n slash type dungeoncrawler where you play as an adventurer who arrives in a cursed kingdom that traps everyone in it. The only way to escape is by travelling through the automatically generated dungeons and defeat the bosses at each end to unlock the truth behind the curse placed by the queen.
The gameplay consists of going through floors, finding the monster holding the key to unlock the gate to the next floor, as well as collecting equipment dropped my monsters or treasure and materials for upgrades. After a few floors, there’s a boss to be defeated that unlocks the next dungeon.
Fighting revolves around timing- you can shield at all times to negate hits, but with each blocked hit or used skill, the skill bar will go down. Once it’s depleted, you cannot block or use skills anymore until you hit enemies enough times as that fills it up again. However, if your timing is right and you block right when you’re about to get hit, you’ll stun enemies and have the chance to hit them more often to deal more damage. Aside from that, each hit fills up a bullettime bar, and once it’s filled completely, everything except you will automatically be slowed down for a while.
Also, you can befriend monsters to come along with you as partners and actively or passively help you out!

Picross Luna 2
A cute picross game with a fairytale story! It’s the sequel to Picross Luna, and picks up where the first game left off. Along with the story (unlocked by completing big fields made up of smaller puzzles to create a stained-glass -window picture), there’s also six trees to climb, which at the end give you more lore and background info to the main story.
There’s a ridiculous amount of puzzles from 10x10 to 20x20, and with each progress the image on the title screen gets more complete. (And if you solve 90% of the puzzles, it even turns ad-free without having to buy it!)

Can y‘all do me a favor and go play The Witch‘s isle

It’s a puzzle adventure(/point-n-click?) game where you have to find an urn for the witch who cursed you before the rise of dawn, when her curse will kill you. There’s 7 possible endings to achieve, all while discovering the secrets behind the village, the witch and her isle.

The things you can do are somewhat dependent on which time it is, like speaking to some characters or going to certain areas, so you gotta make sure not to miss anything. One way you can do that is by watching other characters, because while you can only control your own character, your camera is able to follow the others too (once you get close enough), which you can use to uncover things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.
Also (as I‘m sure you‘ve already noticed) the pixelart and atmosphere is amazing.
It’s not the longest game due to it‘s time limit mechanic and game style (it reminds me of all those story-driven short Kongregate/Steam games in a way),
so if you have the time, please go play it!

ALRIGHT Y‘ALL (or rather y’none) FIRST APP I PICKED OUT OF MY PHONE (and never posted until now) :

Yes, Piano Tail. Not Tile, or tiles, or Tails, or Miles, Piano Tail.
Its (you guessed it) a Piano Tiles clone!
But!
It’s actually community-based! Meaning that instead of being stuck with a set collection of tracks, every single person playing the game can add their own midi-(or osu)beatmaps or make requests for new tracks. It’s really easy to notice that just by looking at the categories the titles are sorted in.
While you’re able to play a bunch of popular pop songs or well known classic songs like in every other of these games, those aren’t all categories! There’s also Anime, Videogames, KPOP, Vocaloid...and Chinese. There’s also a “other” category but I honestly have no idea what’s in there, considering tracks usually get put into “English” when they don’t fit into other categories.
This game actually has 3 different modes including the tiles one, so in total there’s:
“Tile” (just piano tiles)
“Ring” (kinda like Osu or Cytus but only the standard tipping circles exist and youre not allowed to miss)
“Fall” (dots fall down from the top of the screen and you have to press them when they land on the line at the bottom)
Every single track can be played in all three modes, and they are actually all free to play! And if you really like one, you can always put them into your favorites, that way the’ll be saved offline. The number of tracks you can save is limited, however you can always increase them by watching an ad. (Or using the in game-currency that you only get by paying that is also thankfully only used for this, but why would you)
Well, other than that...there’s a search option to, well search for a specific track, and if a track is divided into multiple things or simply uses multiple instruments (game has piano, guitar and drums) you can always decide to turn off some off them. Or all of them and enjoy the silence.
HOWEVER, there is a downside.
It kinda looks cheap. As in, it’s really basic and the background is just a png of some sparkles. It honestly looks like a flash game (without the constant lags and 15 fps). On the positive side, said background can be changed into anything you want! Your favorite character from a show, that adorable cat photo you have, a giant portrait of Waluigi, whatever your heart desires.
So, summary:
Pros
Community-based (play your favorite songs or soundtracks!)
New tracks get added every week and you can add stuff yourself
Everything is available for free
Offline-save for favorites
Customizable background
Turn off instruments if the track allows it
You only see ads if you decide to see them (increase number of favorites, continue playing after missing)
Three different modes
Speed of each track is customizable
In-Game currency doesn’t have to be used at all
Cons
Looks kinda cheap
Different modes play similar
Only tapping or holding
Amount of favorites is limited (can be increased by watching an ad)
In-Game currency doesn’t have to be used at all

APORIA
While the game came out in 2017, it has (as far as I can tell) already been gone from the store since 2020, if not earlier.
You play as as a sorcerer using their magic to defend their tower from the opposing army, harvesting the souls of each fallen in order to unlock new spells and further upgrade your powers.
It’s similar to a tower defense game, where you have to stop the enemies from reaching the bottom of the screen where your life crystals are. You do this by unleashing the aforementioned spells, with each spell having a unique pattern and different behavior. Most of them also belong to one of five elements, with each one having similar spells.
There’s fire (high damage, purely offensive),
ice (low dmg, but slows/freezes enemies),
poison (low dmg, deals extra poison damage),
lightning (the only normal spells that let you reach the entire screen)
And dark (aka the funky one; single target one-shot kills, a trap, and the legendary OP move that kills everything except bosses on screen at the cost of your own life energy)
There’s three special moves which, instead of circling through a movement loop like the others, get charged instead, dealing bonus effected when casted with full charge. Collect all three of these spells, and you unlock the Legendary spell.
The spells appear as shapes on the screen, which, when you hold down their respective button, change size and movement on the field. Once you let go they’re casted, which puts them into their respective cooldown phase until you can use it again.
You also have a basic attack and an ally soul, which both sometimes attack a single enemy automatically, although they’re mostly useless, even after upgrading them dozens of times in the passive skills menu.
Every fifth level is a boss level including…well a boss, which have a lot more health than normal troops and can give them different buffs, from increased speed to healing to damage, or just a shield to make themselves indestructible. If one of those reaches your line, you’re basically already done for. Bosses of earlier levels also later appear as “normal” enemies, even multiple at a time, being the exact same as before.
There are at least 106 levels, which I know because it’s the one I’m currently stuck on. (With everything after “100” being replaced by “APORIA”).
It’s also basically impossible to progress further than level 70 without the legendary skill, and even then it’s still incredibly hard. This causes the game to be REALLY grindy (unless you watch ads for a surprisingly generous bonus that multiples your earned souls by up to twelve if you’re lucky).
And that’s basically all I’ve got for this game!
Some screenshots:

In order from left to right:
Main menu/level select screen
Upgrade screen for the Explosion spell, the first spell in the game
Comparison of Loss/Win screen (can you tell you’re playing as the bad guy?)
Showcase of Explosion in a level with the dragon boss (APORIA 7 to be exact)
This picture unique to the Legendary “Infinite Blade” spell, which always appears before the actual spell gets casted just to let you know this is the cool OP spell). It also features a close-up of your sword master support soul on the left.
Active skills menu, aka the spells menu
Passive skills menu. Lets you upgrade health, soul gathering, and basic/support/elemental damage
This screen appears when you unlock a new spell slot
The Home-screen icon of the game
#this is a long post#ios games#mobile games#random games#fun fact: me being on level APORIA 7 puts me in the top 4% of players category#and there’s actually still people playing this game if Game Center is to be believed#there was even one single person playing today!#also the game bugged out when I went back to level one and now I have to re-collect most of my stuff#I thankfully still have the OP spell and all my 53 upgrades on Explosion#but everything else was reset to when I was at roughly level 20?#and before that 6 of my slots were replaced by explosion#this is also the first time that’s happened no idea what’s going on#tumblr broke my game lmao#edit 19th jan 2025:#status: gone#:(

Underwatch
In this game made for Codevember 2019, you’re playing as a rat trying to escape the lab you were held in after your cage was opened by a mysterious person, who continues communicating to you throughout the game via texts on screens (usually in the form of tips or encouragement).
The game is made up of six chapters with eight levels, each being one room of one particular section of the building, and your goal is to reach the exit on the other end without being detected. You do this by staying in the shadows to dodge the light, as staying visible in any light for more than a second will result in you being caught and having to try the level from the beginning again, all the while trying to find out what is going on here in the first place.
The game has two difficulties, with hard mode throwing in a few new mechanics to make it trickier (as well as new dialogue and a slightly different ending), plus the last update implemented a fail count as well as multiple achievements (some of them being linked to said count).
So yeah, pretty simple gameplay, but fun and sometimes challenging nonetheless
(My end count was 138 fails after playing through both difficulties btw, though that might have been my lack of skill)

On today’s list of obscure games I‘ve found years ago and randomly remembered exist:
Penumbear
a puzzle platformer for iOS released in 2013
in which you played as a cute little bear and have to navigate him though the levels with the help of light and shadows- meaning: by using light to cast shadows, you were able to use the line between light and shadow to literally walk on light and solve puzzles while trying to survive all the dangers of this atmospheric, gritty dark world.
The game was quite long, had a lot of secrets (including secret areas and collectibles in the form of teddy bears) and was incredibly challenging.
It is also (to my knowledge) sadly no longer available, and hasn’t been so for years.
However, it managed to get popular enough to warrant it‘s own Wikipedia-Page (which is incredible considering this was not only an Indie-game, but one for mobile) so at least it won’t be completely forgotten: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penumbear
