You were always on my mind
Last time :
Persphone: Of course! I will send her a text once we get off. I am sure she won’t care.
She would send the text of course but she had learned in the past that it was best to hold your cards close. Never give up information unless asked for it. She knew Thanatos was a good guy and no risk to her but Hera might not see it the same way. Better to just ask if a friend could stay with her and not give exact details unless they were asked.
Hermes: well sounds like that is settled. Let’s get back to it. I think Ares has finally called it a day so if we are lucky we might catch up by the end of the day.
Thanatos groaned stretching and cracking his neck before standing up once more handing Hermes his empty water bottle.
Thanatos: You are sure to jinx us with talk like that. I will start leading the next group in. Just make sure you have the right forms ready this time Hermes.
With that last barb Thanatos takes to the air with one powerful flap of his wings. Persephone and Hermes made their way back down the hill and onto the frontlines once more.
Sadly it seemed Ares had just been taking a breather himself. Twenty minutes after their break ended another batch of souls came roaring in like a tsunami quickly filling up the beaches around the river Styx. It truly was chaos which didn’t ease until several hours after their normal quitting time. As Thanatos had predicted they all looked worn ragged by the end of the day.
After assuring Thanatos that she had gotten Hera’s permission for him to stay they had parted ways. The plan was he would return home to pack a bag and when he was ready he would call the Bellyhands to come give him a lift. When Persephone had explained this to the driver he seemed less than thrilled but he gave Thanatos his number without voicing his annoyance out loud.
Persephone had just gotten changed into a pair of boxers and an old oversized Barley Mother T-shirt following what was in the running for the longest shower of her life when her phone rang.
BH N1: This fella you wanted us to pick up is here. I’ll ask you again. You sure you want him staying here. We can get rid of him easy and won’t none be the wiser.
Persephone had to hold back her amusement imaging how Thanatos might be feeling at hearing the Bellyhands’ words
Persphone : Oh I am sure someone would miss him . It will be fine I promise. Please send him up!
With the faint sound off muted huff the line goes dead and the sound of the freight elevator groaning to life can faintly be heard. Feeling a little hungry Persephone heads to the kitchen looking for a small snack before bed. Just as she finds her stash of cookies she hears the sound of the elevators arrival and some hesitant footsteps.
Thanatos: Hey Princess ? Where are you at ?
Persephone: In the kitchen!
Following the sound of her voice he walked down the hallway in awe of the opulence of the warehouse loft. He had heard about it from Hermes of course but Zeus seriously spared no expense when it came to his love nests it seemed. Just some of the knick knacks alone in this place probably cost more than 6 months of his salary. Thanatos stepped into the kitchen peering out from it to the large open living room.
Thanatos: This place is insane. Olympian’s sure do know how to live large. I think the living room and kitchen are almost as big as my entire place .
Persephone: I know! I mean my Mother’s home is huge but several of my mother’s attendees lived with us so it never seemed that large because it was always so full of life. This space seems so cold and empty by comparison. Anyways..
She hold out the box of cookies towards him.
Persephone: I was having a little snack before bed. Would you like some?
Thanatos sat down his duffel bag on the counter and took the offered box of cookies.
Thanatos: Kourabiedes? What no chocolate chips?
She shrugs nibbling the small white powdered cookie
Persephone: I grew up with these and I guess I was having a craving.
Thanatos: Fair enough, just didn’t figure a young one like you would be so keen on such a traditional treat.
He pulled a few cookies out of the box before setting it on the counter next to his bag.
Persephone: My Mother is pretty in to clean eating as I am sure you could imagine. Cookies like these were a luxury.
Thanatos made short work of the small cookies he had taken, licking the stray powder from his fingers.
Thanatos: Well not to be rude but the one luxury I am interested in at present is a soft bed. I am beat. Care to point me in the direction of that spare room you promised me.
Persephone slipped off the counter popping her last cookie in her mouth choking it down quickly.
Persephone: Of course! Just follow me! It is a tad early but I should hit the hay as well. Today was exhausting!
She lead the way upstairs pointing him towards the bedroom further down the hall as she stopped at the door to her chosen room.
Persephone: If you should need something you know where to find me. Good night !
Thanatos: Good night
Moving further down the hall he went into his room tossing his bag on the bed as he shut the door behind him. He wasted no time getting ready for bed and quickly stripped down and changed into an old well worn pair of thin grey sweatpants and nothing more. Sliding into bed his head had barely hit the pillow before he was out cold. The strain of the last 24 hrs having finally caught up to him.
It would be several hours later that Persephone would awaken her mind never quieting enough to bless her with a deep restful sleep despite her tired body. She continued to lay in her bed for a time willing her mind to still and grant her the rest she much needed but it was a futile wish. Deciding that perhaps a nice cup of Chamomile tea might do the trick she drug herself from her nest of rumpled sheets and made her way out into the hall. Upon entering the hall she heard a soft sound that had escaped her notice in her room. What was it? Turning her head towards the strange noise it seemed to be coming from where Thanatos was sleeping. It sounded like whimpering but she couldn’t be sure.
She hesitated unsure what to do. Part of her urged her to leave it be but her compassionate side whispered what ifs . What if he was sick or perhaps hurt somehow? Checking on him wouldn’t hurt anything. As her guest his well being was part of her responsibility. Mind made up she walked to his room pausing outside the door. The sounds were much clearer the whimpers truly heart wrenching. She tapped lightly on the door calling out to him but there was no response beyond the disjointed whimpers. Chewing on her bottom lip with her growing nervousness she decided manners and propriety would have to go by the wayside. Turning the door handle with a softly muttered apology she slowly let herself into the room.
It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the darkness of the room the open door only offering a small sliver of light into the dark space. Looking towards the bed she could make out the form of a body but not much more from the distance of the doorway. The soft whimpers continued the lump in the bed seeming to twitch and quiver with the sound. Releasing the door handle she moved closer to the bed reaching out and laying a hand gently on the body in the bed. She was surprised momentarily to feel the softness of feathers beneath her fingers and not flesh but it seemed Thanatos was sleeping on his stomach. Moving her hand up she found the top of his shoulder and gently began to shake it trying to see if she could rouse him.
Persephone: Thanatos, are you okay?
At the shaking his whimpering began to lessen and a muffled moan is heard as he started to slip from the deeper clutches of slumber. Coming to his head turned on the pillow towards her his eyes slowly opening but his mind still lost somewhere between dream and waking. His unfocused vision fell on the backlit feminine silhouette before him. Unsure he reaches out cupping the cheek of the face which remained obscured to him.
Thanatos: Chrysiis?
Persephone had no idea who he was talking about but could tell he wasn’t fully awake either. Gently she laid her hand over top of the one he pressed to her check giving it a comforting squeeze.
Persephone: No, it’s me Persephone. You seemed to be hurting somehow so I was worried.
At the sound of her voice the remaining haze between reality and dream lifted leaving him confused and more than a little surprised. Feeling the warmth of her cheek under his hand he jerked it back moving suddenly to be sitting up the sheets pooling around the top of his sweatpants leaving his chest and wings exposed in the dim light.
Thanatos: I ummm I am sorry I seem to have woken you. I am fine. It was just a dream.
Persephone took a step back in surprise when he jerked away.
Persephone: It must have been an unpleasant one. Don’t worry I was actually having trouble sleeping myself and was headed down to make some Chamomile tea when I heard you. Would you want to join me ? I find that it often helps me have a restful sleep.
Thanatos considered her offer. He really would do about anything to be rid of the dreams that haunted so many of his nights. It had been so long since he had last had one so he could only presume it was because he was so overtired. A warm cup of tea might be just the thing he needed.
Thanatos: I think a cup of tea would be quite nice.
Persephone turned pushing the door open more waiting for him to get moving before stepping out of the room.
Moving aside the sheets he slipped out of bed following the departing form of Persephone
Going downstairs she disappeared into the kitchen while Thanatos settled himself into the pit couch or whatever the strange architectural choice was called. It was a short time later following the shrill cry of a tea kettle that Persephone reappeared carrying two steaming mugs.
Handing him a mug she settled down beside him trying not to stare to much at her shirtless companion. Thanatos for his part seemed oblivious to his current state of dress as he blew over the top of his steaming cup in an attempt to cool the beverage.
Stealing a few glances as the silence between them lengthened her eyes land on something interesting. It appeared to be some sort of cluster of scars right at the juncture of his neck and shoulder. What could have caused such strange markings. Scars in general on gods had always fascinated her. She knew her mother and several and other gods bore their fair share for assorted reasons. She wanted to ask him about his but looking at his face she found he seemed to still be dwelling on something.
Persephone: Do you want to talk about it?
Sometime it helps to talk about dreams.
Thanatos shook his head sighing softly
Thanatos: I appreciate the offer but I am alright. This isn’t the first time and It won’t be the last. You awakening me from it was more kindness than I deserve. Add this tea to my tally and I am painfully in debt.
Persephone chewed on her bottom lip uncomfortable with Thanatos’ statement. Kindness should be a given not something that required qualification. Not to mention he had to be joking about being in debt to her. If they were talking debts she was up to her neck in it with him. She was just about to tell him as much when I loud bang caused her nearly to jump out of her skin.
Persephone: What in the world?!
Thanatos frowned looking over his shoulder out the floor to ceiling window. It appeared that the BellyHand stationed at the gate had left his post.
Thanatos: I think there might be an intruder. The guy at the gate is missing.
Persephone: What?! That’s crazy why would anyone be trying to break in here.
Another loud bang is heard downstairs the floor shaking noticeably with the sound.
Thanatos: No idea Princess but I am starting to think crazy follows you like a plague. Perhaps you should call that Number 1 guy.
Persephone: Good idea I just need to go get my phone.
Just as she is climbing out of the sunken couch the sound of the freight elevator coming to life can be heard.
Persephone: Ummm, maybe it is just one of the Bellyhands coming up to explain what all the commotion is about.
Thanatos: I appreciate your optimism but I think it might be misplaced in this situation.
What Thanatos didn’t say was whatever or whoever it was if the Bellyhands couldn’t stop them than the two of them wouldn’t stand a chance. Sitting down his teacup he quickly took scope of the room. If worse came to worse he could break one of the large windows and fly them both to safety perhaps.
The echoing thud of the elevator arriving followed by the violent slam of the gate being thrown up was unnerving enogh. Unfortunately that wasn’t the end of it as a loud growling and grunting mixed with the sound of muttered curses and what sounded like someone loudly dragging their feet echoed down the hallway towards them.
Mystery intruder : Aye, Persephone! Where are you! Get your ass over here and tell these Nanny boys to get the hell off of me.
To say Persephone was shocked was an understatement.
The intruder grew closer a ghastly monstrous shadow being cast out ahead of him.
Thanatos: Ummm, Persephone do you know who it is?
Persephone sighed rubbing the side of her face in exasperation.
Persephone: Unfortunately, I think I do.
Just as she said this the intruder cleared the hallway revealing someone that even Thanatos could recognize.
Ares: There you are! Why the fuck didn’t you come when I hollared earlier. Hurry up and tell these handsy fellas that I am cool and to stop molesting me.
Ares lifts one of his legs shaking it as if he needed to draw attention to the fact that there are three very angry Bellyhands currently hanging off of him. In any other situation he might look like a father with two little ones playfully trying to impede his movements by clinging to his legs while another had a vice tight hold on his neck struggling to hang onto his back.

My city your mountains ,Stay with me Stay
Last Time
Bellyhand N1 chuckled to himself before settling comfortably back in his chair waiting for his charge to awaken and come downstairs for her departure.
It would be several more hours until Persephone came downstairs and required his escort. It was a another silent ride to work but N1 let it be. The Miss seemed to have a lot on her mind still and she would speak on it if she wanted to. Arriving at the garage she departed with a short goodbye before disappearing into the elevator.
N1 was more than right about Persephone’s mind. She had a rather restless night only able to get her mind to still after she made herself some honey and chamomile tea. She could only hope that work would offer enough distraction to keep her thoughts from straying to her worries.
In an attempt to start her day off right Persephone decided to stop at the company cafeteria and grab herself a latte with a double shot. Sure she might crash like a freight train later but by then it would be lunch and she could always recharge her batteries . Stepping out of the elevator she moved into the queue waiting to place their orders with the baristas. When her turn came she quickly placed her order before stepping to the side to await its delivery. Feeling her cellphone vibrate she pulled it out of her coat pocket smiling as she sees Hermes has sent her a text of a puppy with sad eyes followed by a text that reads where are you? She had just sent back a reply explaining her delay when a voice behind her caused her nearly to drop the already damaged cell phone.
Hades: Kore, what a happy coincidence meeting you here. Come for the coffee as well.
Her heart rate began to slow down from the jolt it had at being startled. She slid her phone to the safety of her coat pocket as she turned to smile at him.
Persephone: Yes, I need a little extra energy to get my day started today.
Hades chuckled at her response the sound drawing stares and whispers from those around them making Persephone fidget with the increased attention. Thankfully the fates were on her side and she heard the barista call her name.
Persephone: Well that would be me. Excuse me.
She moved around him to quickly retrieve her coffee doing her best to ignore the stares of the other patrons. Of course they were curious they all had probably seen the tabloid and not knowing her there was no telling what they might believe. She just needed to get to work and lay low. Hopefully the office gossip would die down quickly.
As she wove through the growing crowd she finally made it back to the cafeteria door and was just about to push it open when a hand reached over her head pushing it open for her.
Hades: After you.
Persephone slipped through the opened door Hades following a step behind
Persephone: Well, guess it is time I get to work. Wouldn’t want the boss thinking I am a slacker.
Hades chuckled at her attempt at humor
Hades: I am sure he thinks nothing of the sort but perhaps you could assuage any worries he might have about how you are adjusting to this internship by having lunch with him today ?
Persephone sipped at her coffee to try and hide the signs of anxiety his suggestion had created. On one hand it probably was a purely professional meeting he was suggesting but on the other hand it might be judged by outside observers as anything but. Even just innocently standing and talking with him her skin prickled from the multitude of eyes she knew were watching them. Lowering her coffee cup she looks up at him trying to look confident despite the turmoil her emotions actually were causing on the inside.
Persephone: I of course want to ensure that I am performing to the standards asked of me but I think perhaps having lunch might be too intimate of a setting. I would not want anyone to misconstrue the nature of our interactions as anything other than professional. I have already caused you enough trouble so perhaps it would be better for me to just meet you in your office.
Hades jovial demeanor dimmed at Persephone’s reply but he decided to try and liven the mood with a jape.
Hades: Don’t worry Kore at the very least you have made me seem less of bore in the eyes of the masses .
Persephone frowned her manner seeming to cool instantly towards him as she looked down suddenly becoming extremely fascinated by her coffee lid. Had he stepped out of line? Had his words upset her somehow? He would not get a chance to voice this out loud though because another party had entered the field. With a casual ease that Hades found enviable Hermes appeared draping his arm casually over Persephone’s shoulder giving it a friendly squeeze.
Hermes: Hey Persephone, see you got your bean juice! You ready to start the day ? I heard Ares is on the warpath up there so think it is going to be a killer today.
Persephone smiled up at her childhood friend thankful for the interruption.
Persephone: Ares started another war? Wonder what caused it this time? Is it serious?
Hermes grinned as large a Cheshire Cat his head bobbing in confirmation
Hermes: Oh yeah , with war comes other things like famine and greed. All of that combined can cause a major influx isn’t that right boss?
Hades wanted to pout at the interruption but put on a mask of indifference instead nodding his agreement. His response went unnoticed though as the hyper red head’s attention had shifted yet again.
Hermes: Speaking of war ravaged you alright there Thanatos? You look like something the Chimera dragged in.
Hermes chuckled at his own joke as Thanatos cut his eyes at him the dark bags beneath them making him look quite sickly.
Thanatos: Oh shut up your rooster head I am way to tired to deal with you right now.
Seeing Thanatos Hades mask slipped completely as he glared at him his visage beginning to darken slightly with his anger.
Feeling the intensity of Hades glare Thanatos turned and returned the glare with one of his own. Never one to enjoy glare offs Hermes loudly cleared his throat.
Hermes: Well then, guess grumpy should get an energy drink and we all better get to work. Old Helios waits for no one!
Persephone glanced between the two males concerned by their obvious aggression towards one another. With Thanatos’ arrival the number of stares had only increased. Was this what fish in an bowl felt?
Persephone: If I know Ares we won’t be having any breaks today. I really don’t think lunch will be possible if I am to pull my weight today Hades. Especially with as tired as Thanatos looks.
Thanatos: Gee thanks for the compliment.
Hermes: She isn’t wrong man. Your bags are darker than the river Styx.
Thanatos: Whatever, if war boy is on a rampage you both are going to look like me by the end of the day.
Hermes: You are probably right. You ready to head out Persephone?
Persephone: Sure ummm see you later Hades.
Hades could not hide his disappointment but there was no helping the current situation.
Hades: Of course. I will see that a meeting is set up on your calendar for us to talk. Try not to overdue it Kore. Ares can be a real headache.
Persephone: Oh trust me I know.
Persephone missed the surprised look on Hades face as she turned to follow the departing Hermes and Thanatos. Her having a familiarity with the God of war was something he never would have expected at all. It seemed Kore was full of surprises.
Thirty minutes later the trio were up to their neck in a sea of souls as far as the eye could see. It was a strange conglomeration of souls exhibiting calm acceptance mixed with the wailing and screaming of those who had been ripped from the land of the living quiet violently. To say it was jarring would be an understatement but with their combined efforts they began to make headway within a few hours and things had grown quiet enough to allow them time for a breather on a hillside overlooking the line of processed souls. Hermes just returning with water bottles passed them out before getting seated himself.
Hermes: So seriously, what happened? I don’t think I have ever seen you look this terrible and not been hung over myself.
Thanatos rolled his eyes taking a swig from his water before he replied
Thanatos: I wish I was hung over. I got home yesterday and found my place absolutely trashed.
Hermes: Seriously!? Like one of your siblings came by and crashed unannounced or like someone broke in?
Thanatos: The later unfortunately.
Persephone: That’s awful, was anything stolen?
Thanatos: If they stole anything I haven’t noticed it yet. I was up all night just cleaning the mess honestly. Haven’t really had much time to take a true inventory.
Hermes : Who do you think did it ?
Thanatos shrugged
Thanatos: Reporters maybe ? I don’t know. How does anyone know who commits a crime without catching them in the act. I will just have to get someone in to do some repairs and I guess get a security system installed to be safe.
Hermes: Dang that sucks man. What will you do in the meanwhile?
Thanatos: Make do. It isn’t so bad. It is not like my house burnt down or something. Everything will get fixed or replaced in time.
Persephone squeezed her water bottle the plastic popping and crinkling in her hold. This was her fault. It had to be because of her that yet again Thanatos life was being flipped upside down. She had to make this right. It was up to her to fix this.
Persephone: Come stay with me
Hermès and Thanatos: What?
Persephone: While you are working on getting your places back to rights you should come stay with me. There is a spare room at my place and it is the least I can do.
Thanatos: Uh, I don’t know I mean it isn’t exactly your place after all.
Persephone bit her lip at his words. Technically he was right but surely Hera would understand. She had placed her there to provide her safety so surely it would be okay if she extended the safe haven to someone else in need.
Persephone: It will be fine. You are my friend so I am sure she would understand.
Thanatos looked over to Hermès for support but found none as the redhead shrugged his shoulders.
Thanatos: Well, alright but only for a short while and you have to make sure your host doesn’t mind. The last thing I need is the Queen of the Olympian’s pissed at me.
Hermes: Sounds like a solid plan to me. Let’s get back to it. I think Ares has finally called it a day so if we are lucky we might catch up by the end of the day.
Thanatos groaned stretching and cracking his neck before standing up once more handing Hermès his empty water bottle.
Thanatos: You are going to jinx us with talk like that. I will start leading the next group in. Just make sure you have the right forms ready this time Hermes.
With that last barb Thanatos took to the air with a powerfuo flap of his wings. Persephone and Hermes made their way back down the hill and onto the frontlines once more.

When mad dogs bite, you bite 'em back
Last time
Number 1 took a long striding step towards Apollo growling deeply. Apollo wisely made a hasty retreat sending one last glare at Persie before he disappeared from sight.
Turning his attention back to Persephone the Bellyhand frowned seeing the ring of bruises forming on her arms.
Bellyhand N1: We won’t be making these sort of mistakes again Miss. Even if you hate it it is for your safety. Creeps like that are crafty.
Persephone: Yes, unfortunately it seems you are right. Can we please not say anything to Hera though ?
Bellyhand N1: Don’t seem right to me not to say anything but just this once I can keep your secret. If his lot shows up again though ...
Persephone nods her head laying a hand on his massive arm.
Persephone: Lets not worry about possible imagined horribles at this point. I just want to go home.
Bellyhand N1: As you wish.
The ride home was quite one. The silence of the ride was a stark contrast to the inner clamor occurring in Persephone’s mind. Things with Apollo were getting out of hand and he didn’t seem willing to take no for an answer anymore. Letting out a deep sigh drew the attention of her bodyguards and N1 glanced back at her.
Bellyhand N1: Sounds like you are pretty heavy with worries.
Persephone glanced at the cyclops and could see genuine concern in his eyes. Putting on a smile she had mastered over the years she shook her head.
Persephone: I am fine really. I am just shocked by the confrontation but I will get over it. I think he took the hint not to come around anymore.
Bellyhand N1: His type don’t learn so fast.
Persephone chuckled at the obvious jab to Apollo’s intelligence.
Persephone: Well, perhaps you can train him.
Both Bellyahnd’s snort in doubt of this causing Persephone to chuckle once more as they roll through the gates surrounding her warehouse home.
At the same time as she was arriving home Thanatos was just turning the corner to his own abode. The Furies had assured him that he shouldn’t have to deal with any hordes of press at his doorstep. Seeing the sidewalk in front of his house bare he let loose a breath he had been unaware of holding. Maybe it would all blow over sooner than he thought with the influence of Hades’ enforcers.
Feeling a bit of hope he took the stairs at a jaunty speed, skipping every other before coming to a stop at his door and unlocking it. Stepping inside he froze as he pushed the door closed behind him. Even in the dim light coming from the afternoon twilight outside he could tell the house was amiss. Being perfectly honest it looked as if a Minotaur had torn through it. Stepping further into the room he froze at the sound of crunching glass beneath his feet. Sliding back carefully he decided it might be best to locate a lamp if there was still an unbroken.
Taking out his phone he turned on the flashlight and did a quick scan and located a lamp that might still be operational despite the damaged lampshade. Setting it to rights he turned it on finally having a clear scope of the damage.
Thanatos: For Fucks sake.
Family photos were thrown about the room leaving a scatter of glass mixed with what he guessed was pillow stuffing. Carefully making his way further into his living room his assumptions were confirmed as he discovered the accent pillows one of his sisters had gifted him ripped open their contents spread around the room.
Who had done this and why? As these thoughts ran through his head a new worry entered his mind. Was the intruder still in the house? Staying perfectly still he strained his hearing to listen for the sound of any other movement in the home but could hear none. Still deciding caution was the better move he quietly made his way to the kitchen careful to avoid any broken glass. Needing a weapon he carefully pulled a pan from the dry rack before moving further into his home. Arriving at the back door he discovered the point of entry. The door was still slightly ajar with obvious pry marks on the frame. That would teach him not use the deadbolt. Sighing internally he continued his investigation finally coming to his bedroom, the last room unchecked.
Carefully he pushed open the door peering inside to find it empty but in shambles. His bed looked like an ax had been taken to it with a mess of wood and stuffing serving as its corpse.
Tossing the pan on the remains of the bed he ran his hand through his hair in agitation as he looked around the room. Seeing the overturned side table and its drawers ripped out a sudden worry hit him. Swiftly he made his way across the room and was on his knees picking through the mess of scattered and broken items.
Thanatos: Where is it? Did they steal it?
Frantically he shifts through the mess becoming increasingly anxious until finally after lifting some of the shredded comforter he spied what he was seeking. Picking up a bundle of wrapped material he unrolled it quickly, needing to know its contents were safe. The fabric fell away revealing a gold bracelet with a faint pattern of scales etched into the soft metal. In the center of the bracelet a snake eye shaped opal was suspended in a golden frame between the two half’s of the bracelet. Even in the dimness of his bedroom the fire in the opal came to life. The fire inside the stone flickered like fireflies caught in moonlight.
Thanatos sighed in relief fingers lovingly running along the bracelet relieved to find it wasn’t lost. Everything else he could replace with time but this was his most prized possession . Carefully rewrapping it he stood sliding it into his pocket for safe keeping. Looking around he debated were to even begin. Nothing seemed to be stolen so he didn’t see the point in calling the authorities. Cleaning things up and looking for possible clues seemed the wisest course of action.
Sighing in annoyance he sat to work knowing that he wouldn’t be getting to sleep anytime soon that night.
He couldn’t know how right he was . By the time Helios was just finishing stretching to ready himself for the start of his own work day Thanatos was just dumping the last trash bag of his broken possessions on the curb. With a yawn strong enough to shake him to his very core he stumbled back inside and collapsed on what was left of his couch. Using the last bit of energy remaining to him he set his alarm. He didn’t even want to imagine the hell Hades would raise if he missed work given their recent interactions.
Far away another was up with the birds and being rather like a mother hen her worries we’re getting the better of her. Never one to deny herself her curiosities Hera picked up her cell pushing 7 on her speed dial as she stirred her still over hot coffee.
Bellyhand N1: Early time to be calling M’aam. Is something the matter?
Hera: I am an early bird and I was hoping you could tell me just that. How have things been with our guest?
Bellyhand N1: The Miss seems to be adjusting well enough. We had trouble yesterday but never you mind. We came to an understanding.
Hera’s heartrate quickens at the mention of trouble.
Hera: What sort of trouble exactly?
Number 1 shifts in his chair uncomfortable with her questioning.
Bellyhand N1: The lil lady asked I didn’t say. Gave my word I did and I won’t be saying no more about it. Don’t you worry ma’am she knows if like things occur again I wont be so obliged to secrecy.
Hera: You seriously aren’t going to tell me? Do you forget I am the one paying for your services? I think it is important I know what has happened to my guest.
Bellyhand N1: I see you is concerned m’aam but a Bellyhand don’t break their word money or no money. Begging your pardon but I won’t be budging no matter the threat.
Hera sighs in annoyance rubbing at her temple as the tingles of a building headache begin to stir to life. It seemed the Bellyhands were loyal to a fault. She had been outmaneuvered this time a fact none to easy to swallow.
Hera: Fine I can see you won’t bend despite my wishes. I will just have to satisfy myself in the meanwhile with the assurance that you will take her protection more seriously going forward.
Bellyhand N1: No need to worry m’aam. The little lady and us had what you might call a serious conversation. She’s a smart one so I don’t think we will be needing such a conversation again.
Hera: Very good then. I expect a phone call immediately if anything else does happen.
Bellyhand N1: Pardon me bluntness but I figure you got better things to do then wait on phone call you won’t be getting.
Hera: Smart Ass.
Hera ended the call huffing in annoyance as she picked up her coffee taking a large sip from the now cooled beverage.
Number 1 chuckled to himself before settling comfortably back in his chair waiting for his charge to awaken and come downstairs for her departure.
As Helios began the first part of his morning jog Artemis was just making it home yawning loudly as she made her way into her house. Exhausted her plan was to make a beeline for her bedroom but in her distraction she failed to notice the oversized pair of sneakers just inside the door. Stumbling but managing to regain her balance she glared at the offending foot wear. Apollo had crashed her again? What the hell! Kicking the shoes away from the path of traffic she ventured further into the house finding her twin passed out on the couch a duffel bag resting on the ground beside him. Giving his foot a kick Apollo awoke glaring at his sister.
Apollo: What the hell sis I was sleeping good.
Artemis: I noticed, but what I was wondering was why here? That bag better not mean you think you are crashing here permanently .
Artemis moved to kick the offending bag but Apollo was quicker pulling it swiftly back out of her range.
Apollo: For fucks sake it is just my gym bag. I am getting some work done on my place figured I could crash here in the meanwhile.
Artemis’s eyes narrowed in suspicion at her twin. The bag seemed awfully large for a gym bag and judging by the sound it had made when he shifted it hardly seemed to be filled with gym clothes. Still, sleep called to her and she honestly could care less what insane fad workout he was into now.
Artemis: Whatever, I am too tired to deal with this right now. We will talk more later. Until then just stay out of my way and clean up after yourself.
Apollo snorted rolling over and turning his back to his sister as he made himself comfortable on the couch once more.
Apollo: Sure thing, love you too sis.
Artemis just grumbled back some incoherent reply before disappearing down the hall to her bedroom ready to call her day to an end.

When all else fails go home
When Zeus had appeared a grown man and freed his siblings from the prison of his father’s belly things had of escalated quickly. It would not be long until a war was sure to start as sides were quickly forming. Presently Thanatos was unsure which side to take but he knew a side must be chosen soon. In a war like this neutral parties would only reap punishment from the victor. He had spent many nights with Hypnos debating and weighing the options but in the end neither of them could decide which side would be the better choice. The timeline to decide was quickly running out as the drums or war were beginning to rumble to life. It was Hypnos idea to consult with their parents. Fealty was important after all and mother and father had lived through one rulership upheaval already. Arriving at their family home they were surprised to find their other siblings present. It seemed all of them had the same concern and sought their parents guidance. Taking a seat beside his twin he turned his attention to his silent parents awaiting their direction. His mother looked to his father the two of them communicating silently in a language none of their children had ever been able to crack. Finally they looked back to their anxious children and Nyx told them of their decision.
Fate is not something that can be resisted. Kronos’ time has come and this wars victor is already known. Children heed our words and do not align yourself with the losing side. Make yourself useful to the usurper for he is a son of his father as his father was a son of his. Their anger and wrath only grows more with each generation. Do not make a fools choice my beloved children.
As his mother had predicted the Titanomachy was a long and bloody war but having followed their parents’ advice Thanatos and all his siblings had survived. Out of curiosity he had once gone to the viewing area of Tartarus once and felt his skin crawl at the madness that he witnessed there. As bad as things sometimes seemed under the rule of the traitors the freedoms they had were still better than the alternative.

The lost ones - May Harvest Challenge Day 6 Beach
Styx had grown up in a very large family and by large think several thousand siblings. Despite this her job often kept her isolated from her family. Even her own children rarely visited her anymore. They were of course busy with there own duties and families so she didn’t take it personally. Still somedays the loneliness would become suffocating and she would pull herself out from the river to seek out interaction. There were always plenty of souls lingering on the banks of Acheron but she enjoyed the children’s company the most. Unlike their adult counterparts the children were full of wonder not fear when she appeared before them. Some even dared to try and wade out closer to her in curiosity. Whenever this happened she would send gentle waves to push them back to the safety of the shore before moving closer sometimes even sprawling out on the beach besides them. Styx often found herself the plaything of the children. They would climb up her and slid down her slick skin with screams of delights as if she was a beach attraction created just for their enjoyment. Other times the children she visited were more somber and it would take some motherly probing to get them to open up to her. The saddest cases to Styx were the lost children she sometimes found wondering the beaches. Often they were frightened their deaths having been tragic and sudden. Most of these children’s lives had been difficult in the human realm and there was no one to pay their fare upon their passing. Wrong or not these children were Styx’s favorites despite the sadness they held. Of all of the children she interacted with these children made her remember most her days as a mother. She loved the dependence that grew in these little ones. How they would wait and watch eagerly as she went about her work. Her husband called them her little ducklings but she didn’t mind his teasing. The time she had with each of them was so short in the grand scheme of things after all but it reminded her of her the happiness of her own family. She may not have birthed thousands of children like her mother but the beach had given her the children her body had not.

From the start
A hug was the first vivid memory Thanatos clearly had. He had entered the world screaming like every other baby but unlike most he had not done so alone. His twin was clinging to him his tiny arms wrapped about his middle in what adorably looked like a hug. If one had asked their mother Nyx at the time nothing about their birth had been adorable but that was beside the point.
As they grew together there was rarely a moment Thanatos could have just to himself. When they laid down for their naps he would always awaken to find Hypnos arms curled about him. When they played outside his brother was his constant shadow following his lead no matter where that might take them. Hypnos was always there never more than a fingers reach away. When they were small it never bothered him. He enjoyed the constant affection and attention from his twin. As they grew older though and began to branch out beyond the confines of their family’s territories Thanatos became aware that to outsiders their closeness seemed strange. The looks and whispers never seemed to bother Hypnos but gradually it got to Thanatos and he pulled more and more away from his twin.
First it was just a few hours apart but gradually hours changed to days, days to weeks, weeks to months and months to years. With the absence of his brother’s presence Thanatos became aware of a fact he had never noticed prior. People avoided him like he was the plague. At first he thought it was just a strange coincidence and doubled his efforts to meet and interact with others. It was all for naught though as nothing he did or said seemed to sway what others thought of him. He missed the interaction but most of all he missed being touched. It hurt to see people recoil from even brushing against him. He pretended it didn’t bother him but it was a lie he could not sustain when he was alone late at night. One day after a particularly rough day he no longer could bare sitting alone in his home. He arrived at Hypnos place a short time later and his twin embraced him there on the doorstep not saying or asking anything. Thanatos clung on to him like a man drowning letting Hypnos drag him inside. He soon found himself cocooned comfortably in a nest of blankets and his brothers arms on one of the multitudes of beds his brother kept scattered throughout his home. For a time he lay silently just wanting to savor the sensation of being held. The silence between them couldn’t last forever though.
“You have known from the start this might happen haven’t you?”
“I knew it might but I hoped it wouldn’t. I tried to make sure you would know there was nothing wrong with you. “
“That’s the reason your were so clingy when we were kids?”
“Yes, I hoped you would remember even when others were mean that you deserve affection.”
“People don’t want to touch what the view as death. “
“Maybe not all people but until you find the right people you will always have me. “
Feeling tears burning at the corners of his eyes he hugged Hypnos tighter. There was a tightness in his chest as emotions threatened to get the better of him.
“Thank you, I am lucky to have a brother like you.l
Hypnos smiled against the top of his brothers head.
“I know. “

It’s a yearly tradition
This was the end. There was no coming back from this. Was there even life after life for someone like him? Probably not because then it would never end right? Why had he been so weak! Why had he not stopped?! Pain rolled through Hermes’ body like a tidal wave making him groan in agony from his fetal position on the break room couch.
Hermes’ suffering was not without its spectators as Persephone and Thanatos silently ate their own cake slices while watching the chaos unfold.
So seriously he does this every year?
Mhmm, Hermes has a dangerous weakness for sweets but red velvet cake especially. Honestly if this doesn’t happen on Minthe’s birthday I wouldn’t feel like it was her birthday. Ah, here comes the birthday girl now! Happy Birthday Minthe!
Shove it Thanatos! Hermes! Seriously!? Every damn year I buy a bigger cake so hopefully everyone can have a slice and every year your gluttony grows!
Hermes rolled over eyes glazed with pain and a smear of icing and crumbs littering his face.
I’m sorry it just tasted so good I couldn’t help myself.
Persephone shook her head at the state of him. He looked miserable.
The first step to facing a problem is admitting you have one.
Minthe rolled her eyes hearing Persephone.
Don’t enable this idiot! I swear if you do this again next year I am changing your names to Tubs in the corporate registry and blacklisting you from any canteen cake purchases!
After a large belch Hermes moaned pathetically
There won’t be a next year I am dying!
Minthe rolled her eyes going into one of the break room cabinets and grabbing a container of antacids tossing them at him.
Quit your belly aching it is my birthday that you ruined yet AGAIN and I don’t want to hear it.
Hermes sheepishly took a few of the antacids as Persephone and Thanatos tried to hold in their laughter at his expense.
Maybe he wasn’t going to die from cake but he might from embarrassment this year.

Beautiful
In their early years together Hades and Persephone did many of the corny things new couples in love did. The love they shared was no different than others despite their different backgrounds. As time passed puppy love turned to a mature and comfortable love uneeding of grand shows of devotion. Despite this Hades still hung on to one game they played when newly dating. It had been a silly thing that seemed more proper for grammar school children than gods like them. A fun little game of acronyms so sickly sweet in nature Hecate has complained once of getting cavities after reading one they had forgotten to remove from the fridge before a dinner party. It had been awhile since Hades had tried his hand at writing but he resolved to do his best this morning . He wanted to surprise Persephone. Work had kept both of them far to busy and often when they did find themselves at home together one or both of them were about to nod off where they stood. It was hardly the life of never ending romance he felt she deserved but his sweet queen never complained. So it was Hades woke up early to leave her a surprise. Knowing as was her habit she would go to the fridge to retrieve cream for her coffee he left her a short message on what was normally used as their shopping list pad.

Satisfied with himself Hades grabbed his traveler mug of coffee and slipped out of the house determined to make it home early enough today that he might actually get to share a dinner with his beloved.
It was almost a half hour later that Persephone showered and dress made her way to the kitchen to prepare her own travel mug. Going to the fridge she paused seeing the familiar handwriting. Reading through it she couldn’t help but smile at his corniness. Finishing getting her morning cup ready she took out her cellphone and quickly typed up a messageof reply to him hitting send as she left to start her day.

To forgive is Canine Ch5
Hades youngest dog was by far his most challenging. Sadly given how young Russel was it meant his life before joining Hade’s pack had been a brief one. Russel had suffered the fate that sadly many dogs did. He had been an impulse buy, his owners having never had a puppy had become besotted with his cute puppy face and took him home the day they saw him at the pet store. They had no experience with puppies, knew nothing of his breed and only bought him because he looked so cute. Russel who had started out as a small fluffy ball quickly grew into a stubborn and feisty Shiba Inu.
What Russel needed was guidance and training but this was something that neither of his owners had the time or care to give him. Instead of working with him they often struck or locked him up as a means of correcting his bad behavior. Experienced dog owners would know that these methods actually would do more harm than good. It was important with puppies to be consistent with training but patient.
The only thing that was ever consistent in Russell’s life was the possibility of loud screaming and strikes. In truth Russel wasn’t a bad puppy he just didn’t understand what behaviors were good and what were bad and grew quite frustrated by the lack of clear direction. When his owners barked he barked back louder. When they tossed him in his crate he would scratch and whine until they let him out again. When they struck him he would slink away and often find a pillow or piece of discarded clothing to take out his pent up frustration on. Unfortunately, this would just result in more screaming and abuse for Russel.
One day though when Russel was about 6 months old things got out of hand. He was in the middle of tearing apart a soft pair of shoes he had found by the door when his owners finally arrived home. Catching him red muzzled the male owner whose tennis shoes were currently being consumed momentarily lost his senses. Rearing back his leg he caught Russel in his underbelly sending the young pup flying his back slamming into the corner of the wall leading into the apartments galley kitchen. There was an audible crack heard followed shortly by soft pained whimpers from Russel. Russel heard the angry screams of the lady and the man but the sounds of his continued whining soon drew their attention . Unlike every time before Russel had not fled to another room and instead still lay curled in a fetal like position. As his owners approached he tried to sit up but when his limbs did not respond Russel’s panic began to grow his whimpers turning to scared whines.
Kneeling down beside him the owners soon realized something was seriously wrong. For a few minutes they whispered back and forth angerily amongst each other before gently the young women lifted him to his paws. For a moment she held Russel up but as soon as she moved her support his back legs gave way sending him toppling to the ground. The sound of his small body thudding to the ground was the final nail in his coffin.
His owners were scared they were afraid of being judged, of being accused, they didn’t know what to do and could only think of themselves. From the start they weren’t ready to have a dog let alone a dog as needy as Russell was and now they found themselves in an extremely precarious position. Right or wrong they only knew one way out of it and that was to get rid of the evidence. So it was a short time later Russell found himself picked up once more his small broken body slid into a garbage bag. His owners carried him outside under the cover of darkness not wanting to risk being seen. Russel was a fighter and with what strength he had left in the heat and suffocation of his black plastic prison he tried to chew and tear at the sack managing to create a small hole before his world was turned asunder as unknown to Russel he was tossed into a dumpster the top quickly slammed down after.
Russel would lay panting and confused in this dumpster for several hours before he was discovered by a stranger. It was just a homeless man hoping to find something edible in the dumpster behind the grocery store. Seeing something breathing in the bag nearly scares the man off but his concern gets the better of him and he carefully tears open the bag to reveal the distressed Russel inside.
Lifting him carefully from the remains of the bag the old man tuts sadly running his rough scared hands over the pups body. He knew the pup was hurt and he also knew there was little he could do for him. Still he could try. Gathering his few belongings and Russel under his arm he makes his way to a nearby church that had long ago moved away from a place of worship and instead was a sanctuary of a different sort for the forgotten like himself. The man was kind bringing Russel food and water daily and tried his best to encourage the puppy to live and fight but sometimes things are too broken to ever be right again. In his weakened state and with the other animals that mingled around Russel he unsurprisingly feel ill. What started out of a sneeze soon turned into a cough and then a gravely wheeze. He never did regain the ability to stand again his muscles grew thin and boney but still the man with the rough hands spoke kindly to him and tried to encourage him. Russel wanted to be a good boy for him and felt frustrated by the invisible weight that seemingly held him down. All of that didn’t matter now though cause he no longer had the strength to care. It was winter now and the chillness of the nights even inside the church made breathing that much harder for Russel. Even as the last of his sight faded Russel watched the kind human his ears twitching with their always present curiosity. The man seemed upset but not angry like his other owners but something else something Russel couldn’t recognize.
His vision began to fade to black as his breathing become more and more uneven and as his consciousness faded the last memory he had was the soft feel of the mans hand’s rubbing between his ears.
The sound off a dogs barking roused Russel from his sleep his ears pinning back at the sudden loud sound. Eyes opening he saw in the distance the largest creature he had ever seen. It looked dog like but he resolved his vision must still be weak from illness as it appeared the pooch had three heads. Moving his eyes around he realized that things seemed different. He was still in the church but things were foggier less crisp. Again the bark of the strange dog called to him and with annoyance Russel turned his gaze back. He wasn’t sure what the weird dog wanted. He couldn’t play with him. As if sensing his thoughts the strange creature came bounding over strangely seeming to pass through any pew or post he came to as if they were just clouds and not solid structures. Coming to a stop before him Russel watched in fear as one of the large heads lend down grabbing him by his scruff and pulling him to stand on his paws. Russel yelped with a mix of fear and surprise but as his paws were beneath him he was surprised to find they held his weight even after the large dog released him. What was going on?
The three dog heads look at Russel silently and suddenly everything made sense. He was not suddenly healed he was dead and whoever this weird dog in front of him was had come to collect him.
Taking a few steps forward he lets out a speculative high pitched bark and several grumbles and growls uncertain if he can communicate with the creature before him or not.
‘You came for me? What is this? Is the man with rough hands okay?’
One of the three heads lets out a rumbling growl that Russel easily understood.
‘This is end and beginning. The rough man was one that called for me. He asked I show you way away from pain and suffering.’
Russel still was skeptical of the strange creature before him but unlike his first owners he held a lot of respect and fondness for the rough man and wanted to trust in his decisions.
‘Alright, if rough hands likes you I guess you are okay. Where we go? Can rough hands come?’
Cerberus glanced past Russel seeing those things that Russel could not before looking down to the small pup before him.
‘No it is not his time yet. He must stay. You come away though to better place. Maybe see rough hands when his time comes.’
Russel eyes the three headed dog with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity before letting out a yawn of frustration prancing on toes that he had long forgotten the feel of movement.
‘Fine, will go to this place you say better decide if really is better. If don’t like though won’t stay. Rough hands is kind . No hit, no yell. Very patient. If new place is mean owner will not stay!’
Cerberus’ three heads nod in acknowledgement eyes closed to hide their amusement at the upstart pup. Hades would have a handful with this new pack member it seemed.
‘As you will. Come, we have much ground to cover.’
Glancing back one last time to the shadowy world around him Russel for a moment swore he could see the faintest rippling image of the man with the rough hands still gently stroking a small furry form that he assumed must be his now discarded body. Russel didn’t want to leave rough hands but at a sharp bark from the weird dog he turned away. After all rough hands had done for him he could do nothing for him in the form he was now. Better to do as rough hand wished and go with the strange dog then be a bad dog and not listen.
