spot and jack sibling relationship is like. if it's 92sies or livesies spot and jack, then their similarities are so obvious to everyone but them. but if it's uksies, everyone looks and them and could never imagine them being related because of how differently they act. but they know things about eachother that nobody else knows and are the only ones who realize how similar they are and are just so confused well people are surprised that they're siblings.

david wasn't exactly ready for living on his own
he knows he should've been and he knows his parents did absolutely everything they could to get him ready and he knew he felt like he had it. but a week after moving out of his parents' house, he realizes he really doesn't. he doesn't get it. everything made so much sense in life and in school and everywhere else. why didn't it make any sense now? he wasn't codependent on his family or slow or anything like that. it just caught him off guard.
eventually, he gets a part-time job at a nearby gas station that holds him over for a little while. nothing like his dreams of writing children's books, but hey, every author has their own gas station phase, right? the job can be slow and sometimes the customers aren't the most pleasant as nicely as he can put it, but it pays decently well and he makes enough money to barely pay the rent for his small apartment each month. it's pathetic, and he's okay with that.
he considers briefly asking his parents or his sister for advice, but sarah's already moved out of state with her girlfriend and is working on setting up her own sewing business (he wouldn't want to make her life any more complex than it already was. he knows how hard she worked to earn this and doesn't wanna get in the way.) and his parents have so much faith in him that he feels like he has to figure it out on his own. he'll get it soon, he tells himself, it'll all work out in a month or so.
and in a way, it does. it's one night during a late shift that a boy oddly familiar walks in. there's something strange about the way he walks and the look in his eyes as he scans the store's shelves that keeps david's eyes glued to him. finally, he walks up to the counter, setting down his items. and as he fishes in his pockets to pull out the coins he needs to pay, he glances up and squints at david's nametag. "..davey?"
oh, he hadn't heard that nickname in what felt like centuries. turns out, reconnecting with your old highschool best friend was a lot more relieving than he thought. sure, david had plenty of friends, but most of them were the "pass by eachother in the hallway and acknowledge eachother for a minute or two" friends. jack was a Friend friend. it started with jack asking for help on homework and studying, and quickly turned into meeting up after school every other day to see a movie or just hang out where they weren't supposed to on the school grounds. jack was a year behind him, so they didn't share any classes, but they always made it work. it was fun. so seeing him again was like a breath of fresh air, a trip back in time. they exchange numbers and promise to meet up with eachother sometime when david doesn't have work to catch up.
david quickly finds out that a lot's changed the moment they start talking. he knew jack had always been a bit of a pathological liar, but he was weirdly honest throughout recounting the year they'd been apart. apparently, after david graduated, it wasn't too far into senior year that jack decided to drop out. he tells david it was just a personal choice, and david doesn't ask for any further information. then all the sudden, it's his turn to share, and he doesn't find himself hesitating when he tells jack everything. his worries, struggles, work stories inbetween to lighten the mood. jack just sort of. takes it all in. honestly, david was the last person he ever thought would be in a tough spot after high school. so when he's done getting out his story, jack sort of smiles, and tell david he'd been looking for a place to stay for a while now.
flash forward about a week or so, and suddenly they're roommates. it was a hassle to get it all figured out and jack's stuff all moved in, but it gets resolved pretty quickly. jack's definitely not the.. cleanest roommate, but honestly? any company at that point was welcome, and david couldn't think of anyone better. they spend more time catching up, and figuring out exactly how the other person lived and the best ways to work together on things. it's the most normal david's felt in a long while.
jack cares. jack takes care of the things he doesn't quite understand, and helps him through other things. jack never once makes david feel like he's relying on him. it felt just how it should. he gets the hang of things, and it works out. money's still hard to get, but he's got a job interview coming up for something bigger and jack's started actually selling his art and for once he knows things are gonna be fine. he doesn't feel like a failure when jack's around. he learns to loosen up and not be so uptight. he learns it's okay to feel like you're behind sometimes. it's okay to want something better from yourself. it's okay to not have it all down the first time. it's okay to be himself. and that's all he could've ever asked for.

"Morris! Morris!" Morris hears his brother calling excitedly, and sure enough, the boy comes barreling towards him at speeds he never thought he could reach.
"What is it? Somethin' wrong?" He says, cocking his head to the side. Even in his small worry, he couldn't help giving the smallest smile. His younger brother always seemed to have that effect on him.
"Nothin' wrong! Buuutt, look what I found!" Oscar grinned, before pulling something from his pocket- a small red bandanna.
Morris knew what it was, but still put on his best clueless look. "Yeah? What's that for, huh?"
"Dunno. I found it in Dad's drawer. Said he got it when he was just a kid and had kept it ever since. He said he wasn't usin' it, that I could have it and all, but I thought about it, and-" He suddenly thrusted the accessory towards his older brother, "thought it complimented ya a bit better."
Morris quiets, staring at his brother. Very gently, he takes the bandanna in his hands. Morris had never been one for dressing up all nice, not when he always got so dirty at work, but something in the way Oscar smiled, stared at him with anticipation. It's special to him. Oscar was special to him. He couldn't say no.
Morris smiles. "Thanks, Osc. I'll- hold onto it."
And he did.
Now, here they were. Years later. Morris finds himself staring at the damn bandanna some nights, lost in the memory that felt like just yesterday. And as he looks between it and his brother, so much older and yet still so young, fast asleep against the wall in a rickety old bed in the Refuge, clearly uncomfortable but with no other real options, he can't help but think.
Where did it all go wrong?

since my king of new york semi analysis post did well, i am wondering how interested you all would be if i started doing stuff like that for every song in the musical. I don't see people talk about the songs themselves nearly enough and they deserve and i need to them justice so.
the only one i can't really do one for is That's Rich because admittedly it is the most unnecessary song in the musical (which doesn't make it bad mind you!! there's just nothing to analyze about it) but everything else is fair game. it'll include things like character growth, comparisons to the movie version of the songs (esp for santa fe cause hooo boy i have some Thoughts about that one), general notes about them, and so on and so forth. idk, i think it'd be fun to rant about and get some feedback on!

i see all these posts about how certain characters should've gotten this or had the chance to do that. like "oh, they should've given david a bigger song" and "crutchie deserved more than what he got". and while Yes, that's all true, i see no one talking about the most robbed character in the musical. Spot Conlon.
i haven't seen uksies so i'm not sure if spot has anything more or less in that version, but by broadway musical's sake? my man was absolutely Stolen from. he has 2 WHOLE LINES of dialogue and 1 SOLO line of singing. sure he's in a handful of scenes, he doesn't even have dialogue in half of them. you think maybe he'd have a bigger part in once and for all, but nope! he's just walking around in the background! like. huh??
if they literally just gave him something more i'd be okay with it. they did him SO WELL in the movie. they talked him up and actually showed it. he feels like a really important character. so why couldn't they just give that same treatment to him in the musical adaptation? give him a scene centered mainly around him! let us have the scene where david and jack first go to try and recruit him like they gave us in the movie! give him more than brooklyn's here!! maybe a solo song!!! just!! something!! please!! i want him to Be a character. i want him to have a presence in the story. that's legit all i want.
i have this issue with another character when it comes to movie to musical treatment, but if i talked about that i'd be here for another hour so i'll just leave it there. but please god just let my boy have something and i will die so so happy

THERE WAS NO REASON FOR YOU TO DO THIS. NONE
Fans will be like “he’s my comfort character, I love him :3” and then run him through a taffy stretcher and light his hair on fire.

jack kelly is a weather guy. It is as simple as that. he just loves when it storms, snows, is so damn bright everything seems extra special, etc. sure, it can get annoying during work, but when he's got time to sit back and watch some rainfall or stare longingly at what he can make of the spring sun he is Going to do it.
he especially loves when it rains at night. new york at night is already great, but adding rain to the mix is just something amazing to him. the streets get emptier, the city is mostly silent besides aforementioned raindrops hitting roofs and soaking his hair. to him, it makes new york what he's always wanted. it's still new york, and that won't change, but looking to the right places gives him exactly what he dreams. this man could sit out or in the rain for hours and just be completely satisfied with his life. at least kind of.
only downside is that it leaves a bit of a mess all around for work the following morning, but he could care less. he probably got some drawings out of it in the end, so who really wins here

david jacobs is a big dog person. jack kelly is an even bigger cat person. they had always "jokingly" bickered about which was better, but it never became an actual issue until they moved in together and realized they wanted to get a pet
neither side of the relationship Hates the other animal, they're just too damn stubborn for their own good sometimes. so of course this is an issue just immediately. they never directly argue about it, but it's there. they're doing something at home, say just sitting down and watching a movie together, and jack would randomly pipe up like "this is nice and all, but y'know what'd make it even better?" and vice versa. it's a back and forth process until finally after like 2 months and a whole powerpoint presentation, david finally relents and lets jack get this stupid cat.
they get the cat. Jack is ecstatic. he names it something really dumb, like a reference to an old western movie or something. things are cool. until he slowly starts to realize this cat doesn't go up to him that much. he's like okay that's fine i mean we just got this cat it'll warm up eventually. but he soon he learns that, no this cat warmed up. Just to the wrong person. this cat is absolutely in love with david and always hangs around him and sits in his lap and lays on his side of the bed and is always demanding him for attention. all the work to get this cat and it doesn't even favor jack. jack is heartbroken

rewatched newsies a couple nights ago and i've kinda realized something
so, king of new york, right? racetrack takes pretty much center stage with that one. this is his somewhat big moment to shine in the spotlight, and it's meant to be a pretty uplifting song for the other newsies. but the way the song opens had started to confuse me a little.
race is literally named off the fact that he goes to the sheepshead races very very often. like that is His Thing. BUT, when we get to king of new york, his line is not about that. instead, it's romeo's line. which is kinda weird right? especially with race's line being about his shoelaces as one of the cleaner looking newsies. like That's the thing you're so worried about? that's what you'd do as a famous person? but that's not where my point arises
going back to romeo's line. hearing it again on stage (and by stage i mean livesies), it sounds a little bit like romeo's mocking race, right? that can't just be me who sees that. And that's exactly what i think he's doing. the newsies don't immediately hop onto race's idea of "being famous just gets you everything" the moment he starts singing. sure, they get a little morale boost with being on the front page, but katherine's news about there being a blackout on strike news sets that back a bit, especially with the talk immediately after following crutchie and jack and all the stuff that happened just yesterday. front page or not, they still don't think it's possible to win after their defeat the day before. especially not without jack. not without a clear leader (i don't think they fully considered davey candidate for leader at this point but that's just me)
but Race doesn't see that. he instantly jumps on the whole front page thing and being famous not because he's just realized it and needs to share with his friends how damn cool he is for that. he's using king of new york to lift them back up. he starts it off, no matter of the others mocking and joking about it. and then albert joins in. then les. then davey. then katherine. and at that point everyone's like "okay, maybe he's onto something" and That's why i think this number is so powerful. some of the things they sing about may sound ridiculous or maybe even too out of reach for them, but fuck it! they've earned this. they've earned these dreams and fantasies and this fantastic tap dance number.
this is what gets them back on their feet. what i think gives davey the idea to start the rally, because after this huge boost, they're going for something big, especially after realizing that they were putting up a fight, that pulitzer and wiesel and the delanceys were genuinely worried about this strike, that they now know for sure brooklyn's in on it all too. they genuinely believe they can win this. that there's a chance. and all it took was just the ideas of what were to come if they Did win. maybe i'm thinking too hard into this silly number, but hey, the whiplash from santa fe to king of new york to letter from the refuge has to exist for a reason, right??
