BLAST FROM THE PAST: Frankincense (2017)

With Christmas Day right around the corner, I couldn't think of a better time to talk about this candle.. y'know...birth of Christ (though technically he was born in the spring), Mary and Jospeh hangin out in Bethlehem, gifts from the Three Kings of the Orient following a star... yada, yada,yada.

So this candle came out unceremoniously in the winter edition of the Elements collection back in 2017. Despite it being a new scent (as far I knew/know) and smelling genuine authentic, for whatever reason I completely slept it and its brother Myrrh. I think I was too focused on and enraptured by Peppermint Rosemary and Grapefruit Gin Fizz.  I would eventually pick one up later during the folowing SAS and it sat collecting dust until recently and I thought this Christmastime would be an excellent time to give it a try.

So you may be wondering what exactly is frankincense?

Frankincense, also known as olibanum, comes from the Old French word "franc ensence" meaning high/pure/noble incense. It is a resin tapped from the Boswellia sacra tree. The bark of the tree is tapped over and over until the resin bleeds out and drops are left to harden into solid beads or "tears". Frankincense was used as holy incense in temples and religious ceremonies from the time of Ancient Egyptians til the Middles Ages. Frankincense essential oil is said to have many beneficial holistic properties including a sleep aid, reducing stressing, assisting digestion, heals skin an kills most germs.

Here's a bit of trivia for you - why was frankincense as well as myrrh and gold given to the Christ child by the Magi?

As you can imagine, all 3 items were expensive, highly prized and hard to readily obtain treasures back in the those ancient days.

Those items also served as symbolic and prophetic foreshadowing of Jesus' life

Gold = royal divinity ie Jesus taking his place as "King of the Jews" as a descendant of King David

Frankincense = holy healing properties ie Jesus using his divine power to heal the masses metaphorically and literally

Myrrh = death (myrrh oil was commonly used to annoint the dead) ie Jesus dying for our sins and leaving behind his annointed mortal shell (btw in many languages including Spanish and Japanese, the word for mummy comes from the word myrrh - mirra)

But enough of that nerdy nonsense, on to the review!

The burn was kinda iffy - the first couple of burns, the flames weren't very high and it took awhile for the wax to pool out. The throw was pretty strong, almost on the cusp of being a knock-out; the wf is pretty strong too. The closer it got to mid-range, it sart to smell a little astrigent and medicinal; I'm ok with that but I thought I'd give a headsup to tose who might find that off-putting. This segues nicely into the smell portion of the review.   The candle smells EXACTLY like actual frankincence. I have a bottle of frankincence essential oil so I'm familiar withe fragrance and was able to compare.

What does frankincence smell like? It's beautiful and complex melange of notes, one on top of the other. First you get a sweet almost honey like wood base. Then there's sharp astringent piney vibe, think cypress. And there's lemon peel/zest like citrusiness. And then there's a touch of spice, like black pepper and cinnamon bark. And as far as the candle is concerned, you get the frankincense note and the clove and amber gives the blend a sensual warmth. This is one of those scents that captures you and takes you away on olfactory adventure. It whisks you back to ancient Biblical days; you can imagine yourself returning home from the marketplace and resting on a bevy of silken pillows and you can smell traces of incense from the nearby temple traveling on a nighttime breeze.

Frankincence was/is such a gorgeous scent and soooo overlooked and underappreciated, hence why it has returned. I still kick myself for not taking advantage of it being widely and readily available. It's certainly a lesson learned - don't sleep on a scent that intrigues cuz most likely it will disappear never to return. Hopefully BBW well come to their senses and bring this back at some point; they have been more adventurous with conceptual scents lately and not just catering to the basic masses. Given its significance to Christmas and the story of the birth of Christ, this is a fitting scent to have during the holidays. Fingers crossed, it'll return. If not, there's always Ebay.

22 Thing Happy People Do Differently

I came across this article today, and it really spoke to me.  I will be implementing some of these practices into my daily life.

By Chiara Fucarino There are two types of people in the world: those who choose to be happy, and those who choose to be unhappy. Contrary to popular belief, happiness doesn’t come from fame, fortune, other people, or material possessions. Rather, it comes from within. The richest person in the world could be miserable while a homeless person could be right outside, walking around with a spring in every step. Happy people are happy because they make themselves happy. They maintain a positive outlook on life and remain at peace with themselves.

The question is: how do they do that? It’s quite simple. Happy people have good habits that enhance their lives. They do things differently. Ask any happy person, and they will tell you that they …

1. Don’t hold grudges. Happy people understand that it’s better to forgive and forget than to let their negative feelings crowd out their positive feelings. Holding a grudge has a lot of detrimental effects on your wellbeing, including increased depression, anxiety, and stress. Why let anyone who has wronged you have power over you? If you let go of all your grudges, you’ll gain a clear conscience and enough energy to enjoy the good things in life.

2. Treat everyone with kindness. Did you know that it has been scientifically proven that being kind makes you happier? Every time you perform a selfless act, your brain produces serotonin, a hormone that eases tension and lifts your spirits. Not only that, but treating people with love, dignity, and respect also allows you to build stronger relationships.

3. See problems as challenges. The word “problem” is never part of a happy person’s vocabulary. A problem is viewed as a drawback, a struggle, or an unstable situation while a challenge is viewed as something positive like an opportunity, a task, or a dare. Whenever you face an obstacle, try looking at it as a challenge.

4. Express gratitude for what they already have. There’s a popular saying that goes something like this: “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.” You will have a deeper sense of contentment if you count your blessings instead of yearning for what you don’t have.

5. Dream big. People who get into the habit of dreaming big are more likely to accomplish their goals than those who don’t. If you dare to dream big, your mind will put itself in a focused and positive state.

6. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Happy people ask themselves, “Will this problem matter a year from now?” They understand that life’s too short to get worked up over trivial situations. Letting things roll off your back will definitely put you at ease to enjoy the more important things in life.

7. Speak well of others. Being nice feels better than being mean. As fun as gossiping is, it usually leaves you feeling guilty and resentful. Saying nice things about other people encourages you to think positive, non-judgmental thoughts.

8. Never make excuses. Benjamin Franklin once said, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” Happy people don’t make excuses or blame others for their own failures in life. Instead, they own up to their mistakes and, by doing so, they proactively try to change for the better.

9. Get absorbed into the present. Happy people don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. They savor the present. They let themselves get immersed in whatever they’re doing at the moment. Stop and smell the roses.

10. Wake up at the same time every morning. Have you noticed that a lot of successful people tend to be early risers? Waking up at the same time every morning stabilizes your circadian rhythm, increases productivity, and puts you in a calm and centered state.

11. Avoid social comparison. Everyone works at his own pace, so why compare yourself to others? If you think you’re better than someone else, you gain an unhealthy sense of superiority. If you think someone else is better than you, you end up feeling bad about yourself. You’ll be happier if you focus on your own progress and praise others on theirs.

12. Choose friends wisely. Misery loves company. That’s why it’s important to surround yourself with optimistic people who will encourage you to achieve your goals. The more positive energy you have around you, the better you will feel about yourself.

13. Never seek approval from others. Happy people don’t care what others think of them. They follow their own hearts without letting naysayers discourage them. They understand that it’s impossible to please everyone. Listen to what people have to say, but never seek anyone’s approval but your own.

14. Take the time to listen. Talk less; listen more. Listening keeps your mind open to others’ wisdoms and outlooks on the world. The more intensely you listen, the quieter your mind gets, and the more content you feel.

15. Nurture social relationships. A lonely person is a miserable person. Happy people understand how important it is to have strong, healthy relationships. Always take the time to see and talk to your family, friends, or significant other.

16. Meditate. Meditating silences your mind and helps you find inner peace. You don’t have to be a zen master to pull it off. Happy people know how to silence their minds anywhere and anytime they need to calm their nerves.

17. Eat well. Junk food makes you sluggish, and it’s difficult to be happy when you’re in that kind of state. Everything you eat directly affects your body’s ability to produce hormones, which will dictate your moods, energy, and mental focus. Be sure to eat foods that will keep your mind and body in good shape.

18. Exercise. Studies have shown that exercise raises happiness levels just as much as Zoloft does. Exercising also boosts your Self Improvement and gives you a higher sense of self-accomplishment.

19. Live minimally. Happy people rarely keep clutter around the house because they know that extra belongings weigh them down and make them feel overwhelmed and stressed out. Some studies have concluded that Europeans are a lot happier than Americans are, which is interesting because they live in smaller homes, drive simpler cars, and own fewer items.

20. Tell the truth. Lying stresses you out, corrodes your Self Improvement, and makes you unlikeable. The truth will set you free. Being honest improves your mental health and builds others’ trust in you. Always be truthful, and never apologize for it.

21. Establish personal control. Happy people have the ability to choose their own destinies. They don’t let others tell them how they should live their lives. Being in complete control of one’s own life brings positive feelings and a great sense of self-worth.

22. Accept what cannot be changed. Once you accept the fact that life is not fair, you’ll be more at peace with yourself. Instead of obsessing over how unfair life is, just focus on what you can control and change it for the better.

Battle of the Sales Peeps!!

Ok Here are the shots from my event with the sales group of Atrium Windows. These guys were obviously cracked as the windows they sell. (heh heh). We had fun. I could barely get the page damp with the marker before they were spitting out every bad innuendo about each other they could! I don't know how Zandra (Gomez, the wonderful artist I was working with) and I made it through the night.............anyway, hope you enjoy!

Raised by a mother and a father in Michigan who were separated by the fact that one was a Wolverine fan and the other a Spartan fan. Apparently has never recovered. This guy was very nice and cool. And musically gifted, or so I was told, hence the musical note. Or my attempt at one! If you need it fixed, call him. And he'll call the guy who can do it. kidding. I hear he was the all around Mr. Fix-it.

Top salesman who I suspiciously thought likes high heels and spandex. Far off? He didn't punch me at least!

This is the Birthday gal! She was sweet and therefore did not fit in with the rest of these misfits!

After drawing his mouth closed, I was told he has the gift of gab....this is NOT a reference to ventriloquism (sp). So don't try to hire him for your next party.

Money, Diamonds, fancy clothes, designer make up stuff...... this gal got the Diva of the Night award.

This fella wanted me to make him taller. Noone is higher than those guys that wash windows and since this was a window sales meeting....ok, you get, I know, I'm cheesy. Sorry. Dash replenishment service what is it?

Many tech giants and appliance companies are jumping on the hype to support this new technology from Amazon, but what is it really? Amazon’s head of Devices Eric Saarnio said: “With Dash Replenishment we’re working to make the process of shopping for everyday consumables completely disappear because we’ve all felt the frustration of running out of something we frequently use.”

Many might know of the Amazon dash buttons. It is a small device that you can stick to virtually any surface in your home, and it lets you instantly order household items you’re about to run out of. This is convenient for buying any household consumables when you see them running low. All you have to do is place these buttons next to the location where you place these supplies, such as water, toilet paper, and even fresh fruits. 

The next step further

Amazon took this a step further and created the Dash Replenishment Service. It enables connected devices, like a coffee machine or a washing machine, to measure supply consumption through different sensors including things like voltage, pressure, volume, and capacity. These measurements can then signal for an automatic reorder of supplies before the customer runs out.

This technology can be connected to many different smart appliances in the kitchen and home, especially for office supplies like printers. The device determines when to place an order based on the level of ink or toner, and the order is placed far enough in advance so that it is delivered before you run out.

It is designed to take the burden out of replenishing your everyday consumables. When supplies in your kitchen pantry or laundry room are running low, your Home Connect device will automatically re-order them through Amazon Dash Replenishment Services. Amazon will deliver the corresponding products conveniently and easily to your home. If you wish to cancel an order, you can do this directly with Amazon within 24 hours after receipt of the order confirmation. With this system, you will no longer have to worry about supplies ever running out. 

The idea of easy re-ordering especially for large bulky items like dog food or paper towels is enticing to many buyers, but will everyone be ready to embrace this new technology for everyday consumables instead of heading to their local markets?

Brexit talk with Wera Hobhouse

On 7 November 2018, Wera Hobhouse, MP for Bath, will visit the University of Bath to share the latest developments on Brexit. All staff and students are invited to the presentation which will take place at 13:15 in room 5 West 2.3.

Following Wera Hobhouse's presentation, Véronique Martin, editor of In Limbo: Brexit testimonies from EU citizens in the UK will read passages from the book and share her unique perspective as a French writer living in Bath.

These two presentations mark the conclusion of One World Week. The week of events, led by the Skills Centre with support from a wide range of University departments and the Students' Union, is aimed at celebrating our international University, encouraging multicultural dialogues and promoting intercultural understanding.

Doctoral College Co-ordinator

The Doctoral College at the University of Bath is seeking to appoint a Doctoral College Co-ordinator.

In this role that is central to the new Doctoral College which started in 2017, you will be responsible for monitoring and reporting on finances, ordering items, dealing with day-to-day enquiries from staff and doctoral students and external stakeholders and providing committee organisation and support.   You will need to work collaboratively and flexibly with various different university areas including the Students’ Union, academic staff, professional services staff and doctoral students. 

Specific tasks will also include liaising with HR, Finance and the four Faculties to ensure smooth running of the Doctoral College. They will also provide some administrative support to the Academic Director of the Doctoral College.

The successful applicant will need to have the ability to manage their own workload, to prioritise tasks, to work independently and to be flexible to cooperate with a wide range of demands. The post-holder will have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, as well as being able to demonstrate the ability to take the initiative.

Knowledge of university computer systems such as Agresso, iTrent and SAMIS and experience working in a HE setting is highly desirable.

Mental Illness in Horror: My Friend Dahmer & Suicide Club

Previously: Blumhouse's Halloween.

I love Horror, but too much of it views mental illness as a bottomless well of origin stories for killers. It's disappointing that Horror still views "crazy" as a synonym "villain" when we live in a world where so many people with mental illness are abused, evicted, and killed.

Today I want to look at two very powerful films that have different angles on mental illness. The first actually asks us to sympathize with the notorious Jeffrey Dahmer.

My Friend Dahmer (2017)

This is almost the prologue to a Horror movie. Based on the comic of the same name, My Friend Dahmer is about the years of Jeffrey Dahmer’s life right before he became a serial killer. It’s seldom merely morbid, offering a profoundly human vision of a confused, neuroatypical young man who had a brief chance to change. It focuses on the group of prankster friends Dahmer fell in with, jocular but not cruel.

At the start of the movie, Dahmer collects road kill and other dead animals in his shack, where he dissects them and reduces them to bones. It looks like he’s on the path to becoming a serial killer already, although he hasn’t made the typical jump to harming animals yet. But his father discovers the shack and demolishes it. Dahmer is infuriated, but his father sits him down and says he sees himself in the boy. There’s deep irony in this heart-to-heart chat about the importance of making friends and not isolating yourself, because his father thinks he’s just on the road to being an unhappy middle-aged man like himself.

That irony is lost on Dahmer, who then tries to fit in with the goofballs he knows at school, creating an incredibly unlikely friendship that sublimates his darker impulses. He’s willing to embarrass himself publicly in ways the other boys aren’t. That makes him a legend to them, and gives him an outlet he needs as the rest of his life starts to fall apart.

It could have been a straightforward movie about the descent into violence, especially with how uncomfortable and natural Ross Lynch’s performance is. He portrays someone who doesn’t understand many social norms, and feels compelled to break them without understand why he’s supposed to enjoy the transgression.

There’s an amazing struggle at the heart of this movie. Typically movies about serial killers invite you root for someone to escape, or to bring a killer to justice. Here Dahmer hasn’t hurt anyone yet, and you find yourself rooting for him not to do things. There’s a particularly rare and rewarding scene where Dahmer takes a dog into the woods and finds he can’t bring himself to hurt it. He doesn’t want that life -- yet.

No one person is blamed for what Dahmer became. His mother was emotionally unavailable, bordering on mean; his father had an affair and moved out; his friends normalized misbehaving in public; his physician recognized he was gay but offered no guidance. Nobody here has blood on their hands. Rather, we get to see how if a couple of these factors had been different, someone with Dahmer’s exact mental make-up could live a constructive life. In this way the movie benefits from never turning into a Slasher flick. It manages to normalize a mental condition plenty of other people have without becoming violent, showing you that even the worst cases are avoidable if we take the time to care.

Suicide Club, AKA Suicide Circle (2001)

Suicide Club is one of those Japanese movies I always heard about in college but never got to see. It got its buzz from gray markets in the early 2000s, back when my fellow students were learning how to import region-free DVDs. It’s how we got Battle Royale, Versus, and High Tension. That period still has a powerful charm over me, because for the first time I was seeing American film norms shattered over and over. But Suicide Club was one of the few that no one ever actually had a copy of, despite everyone talking about how disturbing it was supposed to be.

It has a killer hook: groups of teens have begun committing suicide without leaving so much as a note, and authorities scramble to figure out how this is happening. They incorporate dozens of actual teen actors who look totally normal and behave with preternatural cheer given what they’re about to do. It’s partially filmed on handheld cameras where the director tries to do sweeping shots that encompass morbid and tense scenes. When it works, it feels like a voyeuristic window into teen life that is about to go terribly wrong.

After the first mass suicide, teens start joking about joining in. The eerie thing is that we don’t know who among them is joking to demean it, and who is about to jump in front of a train. The movie never nods. The absence of clues leaves you paranoid that something awful could happen to anyone you see, and neither you nor the detectives will be able to catch them in time. In this way it becomes a sort of plague movie, about a plague of self-harm.

The most affecting scene in the movie is mostly one continuous shot of a rooftop party for a dozen teens. They’re singing, dancing, and joking about forming their own suicide club. They start egging each other to stand on the edge of the roof. I leaned all the way forward in my chair, rapt by how bad this could go, especially when they started holding hands. It’s as tense a scene as I’ve seen all October, in no small part because everyone is treating this as a game and I didn’t trust the movie to do the same.

That drama is at odds with laughably bad production values. The suspense in key scenes is amazing, only for the victims to explode like water balloons full of cherry juice. The production is at odds with how wildly powerful the tone can get. The same low budget that made the producers recruit so many real kids and shoot on real locations smashes into how poorly lit the movie is, and how poorly edited it winds up being.  Several times it felt like a Troma movie, except one that was wrestling with far more serious stakes.

Unfortunately, the movie turns out to be a dog chasing a car. That premise is gripping. The ultimate explanation for why it’s all happening? It’s one part bad satire, one part bad soap opera, all presented like they think they’ve outdone the finale Evangelion. Maybe something so ridiculous will calm some of us, who otherwise couldn’t finish a movie like this without feeling sick. I’m still not sure that was worth the trade-off.

Ever since watching it, I’ve contrasted it with Battle Royale. Battle Royale is a story of teens forced into violence told from their perspectives. The terror is theirs, shown through their vulnerability. I wonder if Suicide Club wouldn’t have wound up with a better conclusion if it hadn’t been told from the distant perspective of detectives. There’s tension to being stuck with adults who don’t understand and can’t stop what’s happening to children, yet it moves our sympathies away. If someone were to remake a movie this dark and controversial, might there be more justice to the subject matter if it was told from the point of view of the teenagers?

You will be required to ensure that the day-to-day running of the catering operation is smooth and that customers are provided with a high standard of service at all times. Your responsibilities will include taking customer orders, serving food and drink, working on the tills, stocking food stations and assisting with cleaning and clearing tables and catering areas.
