i'm picturing kris, susie, and ralsei coming to a room that is absolutely overrun with traps, like too many to survive the room, and when you go to fight the first one, rouxls kaard comes in and says, "NEVER FEAR, I, THE DUKE OF PUZZLES SHALLETH VANQUISH THESETH MERE GAMES" and then he runs through the room setting off literally every trap and then at the end of the room he says, "FUCKETH" and disappears and that's the cutscene

Question: do you think that Kramer's contradictory and hypocritical philosophy is a result of bad writing, or of Kramer being written well as a realistically contradictory and hypocritical human being?

i mean i think that john kramer is a character desperate for control. so many things happen to him that are out of his control— jill losing the baby, jill leaving him, his cancer, even his insurance claim being denied. and when he has his moment of clarity, it’s when he’s attempting to kill himself– a negative event, but one that he has full power over. and what he takes away from that is “feeling in control of your decisions is what enables you to enjoy living,” BUT he interprets that as “people need to make a choice like i did to enjoy living.” all of his traps force people to make a choice, yes, but he’s still ultimately the one pulling the strings. so of course all of his traps are hyper-engineered and carefully masterminded. i don’t know how much of this is intended, but i like to imagine that john kramer is willfully blind to his own hypocrisy. he has many many victims that are severely traumatized by what he is doing, but to acknowledge that he’s not actually helping people is to acknowledge that he really has no control over anyone but himself, and i think that scares him most of all.
