If I had a nickel for every time someone excused racism by basically saying racism doesn't exist in Australia, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.

need some people to just embrace “I hate that guy” culture when it comes to fictional character discussions. literary analysis is fun and there’s plenty of room to discuss the intricacies and layers of what characters have done in canon and where on the scale of morality you think they sit but also sometimes that’s unnecessary. or there’s nothing to talk about. and that’s fine?? you literally do not need a moral argument or even a good reason to hate a character. you can just hate that guy and wish he’d blow up. it’s Free. like oh you think so and so should do xyz bad thing and everyone gets mad at them and they’re banished to another dimension? based on what? you hate that guy? sure that makes sense

I just finished watching the season finale of Doctor Odyssey and like first of all, I didn't even like Max and Avery together even when they were hinting at the ody3 and I definitely don't like them together now that it turned into some heteronormative bs, but they really did Tristan and Vivian dirty.
Not only did Tristan relapse in the episode, they didn't even give it any more thought other than making him have an IV bag for a little while before he was back to working. Not even a mention of him going to the next AA meeting on the ship or anything of the sort.
And Vivian was used as a prop when she was there and completely erased when she wasn't there. They had Tristan not tell her anything in response to her saying she wanted something more than casual sex with him and then they didn't talk about that or even mention her in the episodes after that. They gave her no agency despite being the ones to manufacture a way for her to be on the ship and then just discarded her when they thought she was of no use to them anymore.
Honestly, they did everyone dirty in this show, ngl.

even with the clear last-minute hotshots shit and the weird bump in the road that was the masks addition/confessions/no place like home switching etc. 8a was literally good. then you remember 809/810 were literally completed before that hiatus they just decided to rip them up and reshoot buck and eddie’s stuff. then 811 introduced this thread that for they’re trying to make you believe doesnt need to be picked up again, so in 911 world all of that happened just so it could Happen (the ungenerous interpretation being that it was anti-fan service, which is awesome because “responding” to the audience in that way isn’t any better than just doing what they want). then 812 was supposed to be totally different except they chopped that up too and replaced it with a 7 minute uber montage and introduced A NEW CONFLICT between chris and eddie instead of discussing the existing one. after this they filmed killing bobby. but then they ripped up 814 too and inserted some shit ass episode in between that did absolutely nothing for the plot. and then gave bobby the most baffling memorial episode possible. then a moment of sheer brilliance in 817 where all the characters got Something to chew on. and then the finale, which they finished filming nine (9) days before it aired, said “remember everything you just watched? because we don’t <3” and who knows what else they were tearing up behind the scenes. i mean this is just awesome.

a rushed "anyway here's what everyone did afterwards" montage is reasonable when it might be over and you're just trying to cram in a final scene for everyone. (like the s6 finale wasn't necessarily the dream but they were about to get cancelled and tried to do some semblance of a positive ending.) but when you've already got the next season in the bag that's your chance to go big with your ending. specifically chimney's monologue as a rousing final moment that seems like the end screen goes black then cut to a 911 call with bobby's voice saying "my name is bobby nash and I am being held in a government facility I think they're trying to fake my death". the end. everyone cheered the character arcs have space to grow still and we all get alobby to look forward to next season <3

Peter has officially now left the show, he’s no longer on the cast press releases going into season 9.
He is, however, still listed as an executive producer.

Okay anon, I blocked you, but yeah, I think that as someone who was talked out of a ledge with media I love, I mean not a literal ledge, I had a knife, not important, I have the right to be look at that call and Maddie telling a caller to kill themselves as the show low-key telling its audience that they can kill themselves because stopping someone from jumping because their favorite show will stay the same when the plan was to kill the main character and proceeding to kill the main character is at least extremely out of touch. And it is a big fuck you to the audience no matter how you look at it.

tim: we're going to have the el paso fire captain tell eddie about how their last hire left because he wanted to be with his wife, and then, 5 episodes later, we're going to have eddie finally get the call from el paso fire that he has a job
some crew member: omg genuis so now you can parallel eddie and the previous hire by having eddie chose to stay in LA for buck
tim: what? no???? chimney is just going to tell him to stay and he's going to stay. don't be an idiot
-
tim: we're going to dedicate the A plot in bobby's funeral episode to a real life story about how the mother was right and the kid was hers and really drive home the point that the casket was empty and the government was keeping bobby's body
same crew member: ooooh i see i see. and then it turns out the kid was actually hers and bobby's own coffin is empty and the government is still keeping him!
tim: no, you stupid fuck. the kid isn't hers and bobby is dead dead
-
tim: next episode is going to be called don't drink the water. and we're going to bring back the same actor that 11 episodes ago told eddie he was denying himself joy by drinking water instead of juice
crew member, through tears: so now eddie has another conversation with the priest and realizes the juice he's been denying himself is staying in LA with his family and buck?
tim:
crew member: they're not even going to interact, are they? and the metaphor is not going to be brought up again like you never brought up the competition line again?
tim: now you get it

i very much AM angry and upset and probably will be until the dust settles. like, emotions are high right now. it's barely even been twelve hours. everyone is entitled to feel that way and express that. and i think it's healthy to express that. and like, if you don't have space for any positivity right now, then that's fine and understandable. but going to the inboxes of people who do and being a dick about it isn't going to make you or anyone else feel any better. so maybe like, don't do that. just a thought. a suggestion

Do I think Chimney is the best option for captainacy (now that Hen apparently doesn't want to be captain) compared to getting someone new to fill the spot? Yes.
Do I think Chimney really wants the position? No.
He'll be a great captain and he has grown immensely since he was interim captain in season 2. But that still doesn't mean he has grown out of the fear of what did happen when he was interim captain. The whole reason why Hen was the interim captain in season 6 and season 7 is because Chimney didn't want it. And while they show us that he's a good leader, they don't show us he wants it until the very end.

Maddie received no pushback for telling a caller to kill themselves, Brad saying that his captain hotshots or whatever is going to live so the guy can’t kill himself, “don’t jump” being thrown around at Buck when Gerrard was captain in the beginning and the captain at the end is Gerrard (I know he’s leaving), guy who struggled with suicidal ideation ends up having to sacrifice himself after finally deciding he wants to live, Athena is building her dream home just to lose her husband and sell it, Chimney on top of the roof before the Bobby funeral only for him to appear headed for a job he’s never really seemed like he’s wanted, Hen having a whole episode about being forgotten and it being okay to take up space deciding that she’s not going to be captain actually. guys. I think the recurring theme of the season is that it’s good to give up on your dreams and maybe dying is okay actually.

it's really the way I can have optimism and have fun even when it's stupid, except for killing Bobby. like for the most part I can enjoy myself watching what can be a very silly show and after some complaining shelve whatever frustrations I have for later when character threads appear and disappear or get rushed for the sake of spending a bunch of screen time on a no stakes emergency or season long storylines end up having no point. and those things ARE deeply frustrating but it's like. fuck whatever these are still the characters I love better luck on that cohesion next time kiddo. I can complain and then eventually move onto looking forward to what's next. uh except for killing Bobby. and like don't get me wrong I personally me myself will continue to do all of that next season and enjoy what I love about the show. but the cloud over everything is Bobby died and THAT wasn't done well and there's no reset or do over?? and the crazy thing is killing a main character is not even weird. you can do that and do it well, if it works with the tone of your show and your stories and you have a real plan. something like that could have felt designed to work with what was already happening with every character and fit into the things already being done in the overall season and have all of that emotionally pay off together and be a good choice for the story and tie into everyone's personal journey. instead it comes across like an idea Tim Minear had in a dream because he wanted to do Something Crazy and couldn't wait to do it and literally everyone hated it and told him it was bad but he was convinced it was gonna rock anyway. and then it feels like everything in the season became somewhat of an afterthought, including in a large part the story of it HAPPENING?
and like yeah of course there is some great acting and a handful of great moments of grief being portrayed and major kudos to the cast for delivering that. but it... not even derailed. just straight up interrupted? every personal storyline. without necessarily replacing a lot of it with anything BESIDES grief. and we're still being like. almost rushed past a lot of those moments to... get to the next B plot that is supposed to meaningfully parallel what we haven't been allowed to process yet? so we can get to the next big emergency that is fun but also kind of nothing? where it's back to the status quo of yay the team and miracles are real? and well it's like. I can enjoy that, sure! but if you didn't want this to truly reverberate or change the tone of the show even temporarily, then choosing something that alters the core of things in a way the audience will not ever move on from is a mistake? and if you did want it to do that, then it's strange to treat it like it doesn't need space to breathe, and you can give it a few minutes and then just jump back to toilet snorkeling and thong jokes in the next episode as long as people are still sad in separate scenes. it will just forever be a really weird way to execute what should have logically had much more care taken with it than anything thus far (not to mention. a really weird way to execute that guy.) and they did not do that. so if you tell me I should get over Bobby or it's "disrespectful" to not want him dead because of the work people put in portraying it I do feel compelled to swing. sad. oh well. there's always the Government Lab.
