Cronenberg has always been a prophetic filmmaker, but eXistenZ takes the crown. Not only does the film feature a plot about a virtual reality MMO, a videogame genre that didn’t came into fruition until much later, it also contains this shot.
Now remember this is a film from 1999. These guys are casually looking at their mobile device which sports a touchscreen. This is a very common view today, but back in 1999 no-one ever heard of an iPad (or an E-Reader for that matter), nor was anyone looking at some portable screen in their downtime.
And to think this isn’t even a plotpoint or a very important shot. It’s just a throwaway moment, right before the end of the film. Truly astonishing.

Greta Gerwig Directs “The Domestic Kingdom and Terror and Beauty,” Starring Florence Welch
“The Domestic Kingdom and Terror and Beauty,” a fashion fantasy created for W magazine starring Florence Welch and directed by Greta Gerwig, with photographs by Tina Barney and styling by Sara Moonves, has been in the making for awhile now. Gerwig, who took a break from her awards-circuit handshaking for her Oscar-nominated Best Picture contender Lady Bird to create this dark domestic tale, has been wanting to collaborate with the singer Florence Welch since they became friends five years ago. “The theme was dark fantasy, and, in a certain way, Florence already lives there, so I didn’t want to double down on what she’s already made,” Gerwig says. “It would actually be her dark fantasy—trapped in a house as a housewife forever.”
