I'mma ramble for a second.
I think the silly haha minigames in Abiotic Factor are ingenious solutions to a distinctly "not fun" trapping of the genre.
Not "Universal" solutions, but solutions I think A GENUINELY SIZEABLE PORTION of the genre would be better off adopting.
Sleeping in survival games is boring; It often forces all the players in a multiplayer setting (which many of these games encourage) to sync up and stop playing the game at the same time so they can skip through the night, or they annoy a player in that group who wanted to do night stuff or vice versa etc.
Sleeping in more hardcore titles just forces more and more micromanaging such as if you're in a coop game where one player has some variant of "sleep deprivation" and the other has the opposite- now you have someone desperate to sleep all the time but unable to do the "fast forward" option many of these games implement because their partner isn't tired.
As much as Project Zomboid is one of my favorite games ever, I can't say "sleep in a multiplayer session" is high on my list of positives for the game both in terms of the literal implementation and in how it forces me and my buds to use similar perks or modify the server to allow us to not go absolutely mad from how our sleep schedules struggle to line up naturally.
Now the "solution" for this last case has always been "Well, just don't pick different perks then" but isn't THAT a problem?
So here comes Abiotic Factor going "What if sleep didn't advance time and didn't need to be synced in any way" "What if sleep was a per-player mini-game where you can speed up how long you're stuck sleeping by doing well, and the mini-game has a longer base-time based on how tired you are" and bam, a lot of things got improved all at once.
Because sleep in Abiotic Factor doesn't demand your fellow players bend their playstyle to your will, it instead lets YOU feel in control of it entirely. You're guy has sleepy disease? Well then YOUR gameplay will be influenced by that as you'll be seeking out couches and beds to catch quick cat-naps in, but you won't be dragging down the experience for everyone else because of it!
Also the decision to make sleep not fast forward time, but instead be game-ified like this honestly does give you the "feeling" of managing your various survival health stats while still letting you experience all aspects of the game-world's time states (IE: You still feel like you're managing your little science guy, but you also get to interact with day AND night threats instead of effectively missing half of it because you're sleeping through it).
Pooping is another layer of improvement in my opinion, because so many of these games give you 50 bars to micro manage but it all really boils down to "eat and move around and sleep".
Meanwhile Abiotic goes "Hey, the bars in this game all have some gameplay tied to them to encourage some fun. Scavenge, farm, or kill for food. Boil, filter, or scavenge for water. Keep an eye on your sleep with a small minigame aaaaaand poop."
All of them are tied to figuring out solutions- finding the thing that fulfills you, or building it. Finding couches or making a bed. Finding fresh water or figuring out a solution for it. Finding food or figuring out a source of food. Poop is just straight up another entertaining bar.
The solution to it is exploring the world for an easy to access toilet, or making one. It's VERY similar to sleep in that respect, and handled the same with a minigame.
I got lost in the sauce a bit but basically, Abiotic took a very smart approach to their micromanage bars- one that SPECIFICALLY emphasized FUN instead of just being there because it's expected to be there.
Food is pretty entertaining in this game. It's usually entertaining in these types of games, but I really do enjoy the variety of solutions here- everything from farming vending machines to hunting to cooking feel valuable to the pursuit- it's well handled!
Same with water as mentioned, lots of solutions, it makes it rewarding to tackle the problem.
Sleep is almost universally an "Unfun" part of these games. Not a NEGATIVE exactly, but there's nothing "fun" about sleep in these games- and Abiotic said "Why not?" and just made it non-intrusive to coop gameplay and turned it into a minigame that doesn't force you to skip hours of game-time. Genius!
And pooping is just a fun addition- a fun bar to manage- a silly one that has more depth than initially grasped. Because yes it encourages exploration which in itself is great, but it ALSO gives an early game risk reward of providing farming material in return for an easily dispelled debuff, and for those seeking to solve a problem there is a means to turn this bar into a resource with no debuff by making your own toilet.
It exclusively adds to the gameplay and fun instead of being a survival bar for survival bar's sake.
I struggled to convey my ideas because this is all one keysmash ramble, but basically I think Abiotic Factor did a good job at taking genre trappings and turning them into fun gameplay. Nice :)

really big fan of games that are just doing whatever they want that make discussing them sound crazy. been making decent progress in abiotic factor but my current hindrances are the european army and the grim reaper. the army is just kind of everywhere being a nuisance but the grim reaper is giving me troubles because he is hanging around the specific storage silo i need to get kevlar from.

a solid 70% of the sekiro fandom is inscrutable to me. they think wolf is some sort of alpha male? he dies instantly if he gets too scared and you can block terror buildup by having him hide under his safety blanket umbrella until he feels a bit braver. name one normal conversation he has with a woman, ill wait. "oh, an alpha is dominant in every interaction" wolf doesnt even try to show dominance when talking to a little orphan girl. enemies gossip about how much of a loser he is. i really dont feel like it couldve been clearer

"kung pow penis," a phrase commonly used in reblogs to indicate utter disdain for OP, has twelve letters, each of which (traditionally) must be supplied by a different user. the unanimity of disdain indicated by these twelve unrelated users has strong parallels to the requirement of unanimity for a jury—also traditionally of twelve—to arrive at a verdict. in this essay i will

My Fire Emblem character, Lyraa Sparrow.
I worked really hard on cleaning up the Three Houses bio pages and I added some little extras. My friend helped me with the summary as I'm not the best with writing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a Hopes design but I haven't drawn a portrait yet.
If you want, you can use the blank bio here
Lore and facts below the cut!
Lyraa is a commoner from a small village called Danu in the Oghma mountains and was raised by her parents who belong to a group of mages who specialised in a secretive and rare type of black magic. Danu is known to have pristine water sources and in the past whenever a drought would happen in the Empire, Danu's water sources would always be abundant, but no one outside the small village knew why. This was actually because the secretive mage group specialised in the scarcely known type of black magic, water magic, and they would work hard ensuring the water ways would be full and clean. Lyraa was taught water magic as soon as she could read tomes. She had a knack for the black magic and she learnt quickly but would occasionally get into disagrements with her parents on the ethics of keeping such important magic secret.
One day a monk claiming to come from Garreg Mach visited Danu and happened to see Lyraa perform the rare magic and suggested she could learn more magic at the academy. Lyraa, eager to learn more forms of magic, took a job helping out at a local bee farm. Here she developed a love for insects and honey, and she loved her time working here. She eventually saved up enough gold to pay for the tuition fee and she enrolled at the academy.
However Lyraa would quickly learn that the academy was heavily military focused and she strongly considered leaving, but ended up forming bonds with her classmates and decided to stay. She would never openly admit that however, prefering to say she stayed for the animals that live on the academy grounds.
During the academy phase Lyraa is reserved and shy around new people but when she feels comfortable she gradually comes out of her shell and can be considered odd, eccentric and direct. Lyraa cares deeply for her friends, but doesn't like to admit that, perfering to come across as aloof, almost tsundare like (minus the mean side). She perfers to interact with people who are pure and honest about their intentions and finds people who are secretive about their intentions difficult to trust. She often has difficulty conversing with others, and can sometimes come across as rude despite her best efforts.
She creates close bonds with Ferdinand, Linhardt & Bernadetta, and should they be recruited in the same house, Lysithea, Balthus, Constance, Felix and Shamir. (I had planned on creating more supports but I didn't want to bloat the page too much can consider Byleth on this list too). Lyraa's support with Byleth is about her learning when she's bitten off more than she can chew with regards to her magic, and it is during the support where you learn what happens with Lyraa whilst Byleth is sleeping. During the time skip, Lyraa returns back to Danu and she continues her studies in earnest. However, her eagerness backfires and a dark magic spell experiment goes wrong and she is hurt by the spell. It leaves her with nerve damage in her left arm & hip, and a white streak in her hair. From this point on, Lyraa steadies the pace of her studies when she is forced to take time to heal. She becomes more in tune with nature and when she is well enough again she returns to her studies whilst protecting her village from bandits trying to learn the secrets of the water magic. Provided she has reached C support with Ferdinand, Bernadetta and Linhardt, Lyraa would return to the academy for the planned reunion. Lyraa is vocal about her dislike of war, how it is damaging the land and wishes to bring the war to an end as soon as possible.
Some areas of Lyraas story are left ambiguous so I can fill them in later on with her supports. I'm happy for Lyraa to make friends with others OCs, I only ask you don't ship her with any OCs. Whilst I plan on her having S support with others, her "canon" S support is with Ferdinand.
Random facts about Lyraa-
- She would replace the little girl who gives the "Feline and Canine friends" quest.
- Should she be defeated during the academy phase, she would return home to continue her studies but would die during the accident with the dark magic.
- Lyraas paralogue, "Unknown Depths", would be returning back to Danu and foiling some bandits plans to steal a staff. This item, "Rán's staff " would give a boost to her water magic, making it more powerful and also allowing her to cast the magic one space further. The bandits are actually lead by the "Monk" who told Lyraa about the academy and she is disapointed at being played.
- She has nicknames for her friends, similar to how Hapi has nicknames, but unlike Hapi Lyraa keeps them to herself, often muttering them under her breath sarcastically. Ferdinand is "Mr Noble Pants". Bernadetta is "Miss Scaredy Cat", and Linhardt is "Mr lazybones". Lysithea is "Miss Narky Shark", Balthus is "Mr King of Everything", Felix is "Mr Moody Butt", Constance is "Miss Gemini", and Shamir is "Miss Scary Lady."
- She has a British countryside accent, and whilst she does use eloquent words, her speech is casual and full of colloquials.
Extra facts about Lyraa's development-
- Lyraa is based on myself, so she is autistic, ace & pansexual. None of her S supports would result in her having children. I also have nerve damage. Lyraas nerve damage extends to her hip, but in real life my own nerve damage is only in my arm, but I have had a hip replacement and felt the dark magic accident would cover her hip in reference to my hip replacement. I figured the dark magic accident would explain why she has a white streak in her hair, like my own hair (but mine is dyed).
- Like myself, Lyraa has hetrochromia but it is rather subtle.
- Originally I wanted to include my tattoos in her design but decided to omit them.
- I wanted her to have dark magic, but also water magic. I decided to let her have both after debating it in my mind for ages. I personally always had more of an affinity for water and to make it so it didn't come out of no where I decided to write her coming from a village where water is highly important and respected, even worshipped. I like to imagine it came from the distant past when Indech was friendlier and roamed around more. I did consider giving her a crest but I also wanted her to be a commoner to better reflect her speech and way of life without her being another experiment that TWSITD did.
If you actually read all of this... wow, thank you! I wrote all this for my own amusement so if you read this far I would be so suprised and shocked haha. Sincerely, thank you for reading about my self indulgent OC ♡
