First off I know I am a little late to the ACOTAR train but I hopped on anyway. I meant to write this blog as I read the book but I was so engrossed with the book and with work that I forgot to write. So this first post will be a general thoughts that went through my head as I read and then my thoughts on the book after I finished reading.
So fair warning spoilers ahead.
Overall Thoughts:
I enjoyed the book more than I thought I would. I know that this is a spicy series and that Maas might not even touch on the spicy content in this first book, but I was a little unsure about the spicy level. But I keep an open mind and began reading. I loved the world building that Maas created for Fayre and Co. I think I spent more time trying to visualize the setting as Maas described at the beginning of the book than paying attention to the story itself. But when the plot picked up I was all for the next chapter.
First Part of the Book Thoughts:
I really tried to give Fayre grace with some of her reactions to the Fae and the Spring Court. Every so often I had to put my Kindle down and remind myself she is a traumatized 19 year old and a lot of her reactions to what is going on is as such. I really did admire how far she was willing to go to keep her promise to her mother, so much so she was willing to go with a strange Fae and make sure the rest of them lived.
On the topic of Tamlin coming to kidnap her⌠that wasnât even the two days. She killed poor Andras (I had no further spoilers of the other books till I had to look his name up, so bear with me while I pretend to not know anything past this book.) and then boom that night Tamlin shows up demanding her to pay the price. Sure Fae magic but that was pretty fast. Wait no it was a day and a half. But still.
Moving on Tamtam was very kind with Fayre but could have given her a little more context on what she was supposed to be up while in the Spring Court. Sure I know he couldnât speak of the curse but he could have given her more assurances than she had. Espically after she nearly got killed twice by evil creatures coming onto the property. Another thing TamTam did that made me upset for Fayre was that she had no clue how many Faeries were wandering around the halls until he pulled up on the glamor. I would have been so mad too. He could have at least slowly pulled up the glamor so that she could have been more comfortable than just seeing Alis and Lucien.
Second Part/ End of the Book Thoughts:
Lucien is the real MVP of this story, yes he was angry at Fayre but he eventually warmed up to her and was really nice to her. I thought of them more of found siblings by the end of the book. Also he went through so much and then was like âyay! Thanks omg.â Poor Baby. Heâs just a spicy cinnamon roll, who needs a long long vacation.
Fareâs family made me mad. Like the least you could do is be a little more helpful, and the only reason they were helpful was when Fayre showed up with a ton of money/ her kills and then they were like âI guess we can cut wood. Uhggg.â I did redeem Nesta at the end because she saw through the glamor and was really worried for her sister but still a little salty at her. But I have siblings who I pretend I hate and they get on my nerves but I still would do anything for them.
So onto the Romance of TimTam and Fayre. It felt kind of forced (which yes I get it) but TimTam was extremely sus after the Spring Festival. Yes the scene was hot but his words made no sense. Also if you are trying to tell the woman you need to help break a curse and are being super vague when you can tell she is listening in, maybe be a little more specific. But then the High Lord of the Night Court shows up (I had second hand embarrassment and had to scroll) and Fayre is so drunk, like TimTam come get your woman if you are so scared of her being found out by the evil lady.
Their love making scene was cute, but TimTam, you should have said I love you through out the whole scene (unless he did but I still donât like you anymore) maybe Fayre would have said it before she left instead of being unsure. Also more of a writing thing it would have been funny if the curse broke because Fayre thought âI love youâ instead of having her say it. *shrugs*
At this point I was reading as fast as I could because I wanted to see Evil Faerie Amarantha lose. Also her wanting to marry TimTam because whatever he was a literal child (Idc about Fae ages or whatever he was a literal child all those years ago). A CHILD. Throw the whole woman out.
The Three Trials:
Awesome, cool, a real adrenaline rush. I hated the time in between but thanks Ryhsand for at least making sure Fayre didnât really remember much. Speaking of Ryshand I literally was like âYes okay, new hot male lead great, now move I am here for the plot not the love triangle.â Which is funny because at the end I knew the next book would feature the love triangle. Also at this point I lost all respect for Taco. He should have kept his hands to himself but instead he makes Fayre a laughing stock anyway. Lucienâs mother was so sweet and I felt bad for her having to watch one of her sons almost die multiple times. So Worm Pit Cool. The Reading Pit made me want to throw Fayre into a pit of fire because she had a chance to learn to read but didnât. Still didnât blame her because she didnât trust anyone. The whole Three Kills part was horrendous and poor Fayre and those Faeâs families. I did like how the second Fae knew it wasnât Fayreâs fault and that broke me on a whole new level. Also Tacoâs heart being made of stone made so much sense but also I see it. Based on all his interactions with Fayre to this point yeah I see it. (Idk what this means for the other books but it isnât looking to pretty for the two of them.)
Yay! Fayre is a High Fae now which I kind of saw forshadowed in the beginning because if she was going to fall in love with Taco Boy he would want her to live forever and not just her whole human life. Still a really cool scene.
All in All:
I really liked this book, idk if I will read it again but I canât wait for the second. I am taking a break from binge reading as I donât want to burn myself out on the series before I get into fully. I do recommend this book if you are still on the fence/ i sdonât know if you would like to since you have read all these spoilers. If anyone wants to comment their thoughts please feel free. Iâm sorry this was so thought flow spit up. Will try to do better when I read the second book.
Favorite Characters:
Lucien my little spicy cinnamon roll. Lucienâs Mother and Alis for actually helping Fayre when she asked for it without strings attached.
Hated Characters:
Amarantha (Or whatever her face is). Fayreâs family (still meh about them). And Taco Boy Idk I lost all hope for him at the end. Heâs hot but *shrugs*
