I cut off my hair and felt like a molerat lmao I was completely overwhelmed, because I realized that there’s still so much shit I have to unpack around being fat and Black and femme and existing in the world as myself. I made jokes about my face, my body, my self-worth to avoid getting emotional over it–my hair has been like a smoke bomb, it momentarily distracted from the other things that I (and others) have always considered flaws: my ‘unacceptably fat’ body shape with large belly and small ass, my damn chubby high ass cheekbones and the way my eyes disappear when I smile, my broad shoulders and height that would seemingly tell others I was more equipped for receiving pain, the list goes on. And I was freaking the fuck out because for the first time in a long time, I had nothing on my head to distract myself from all the things I struggle with loving. Luckily I have really great friends. Namrata picked up on the internal shit happening through the jokes and, even though I didn’t want to at first, beat my face (she’s a talented artist too and I feel like a literal canvas when she does my makeup), had me dress up and then took a bunch of photos of me. A bunch of photos that I hated at first, but ones that are really beautiful. This is one of my favorites. I’m so grateful to have people in my life like you, that see me even when I don’t. Thank you.
