What if they're the most mushy and sweet poems in existence but neither of them recognizes all the pining going on. Vertin never forgets her birthday and gives her similar collections of love poems. Sonetto studies poems in a structural sense so while she sees that their similar, she doesn't realize they're all love/pining/longing. She treasures them nonetheless. Meanwhile Vertin doesn't even realize what she's doing it; she does "what feels right," following the heart so to speak.
