We know that Mike is hyper aware of Will at all times. We’ve seen it all throughout s2 and he proved it again in s4 during their fight at the roller rink and more throughout so imagine how exhausting it must’ve been in s3 to actively keep Will at a distance and pretend to not pay any attention to him. That weighs on a person. Mentally and physically. It’s a constant conscious effort to not react when we know that Mike is used to being so reactive to Will. Mike went from being superglued to Will’s side all throughout s2 to completely cutting himself off from how he naturally and normally interacts with him. Imagine shutting down every single genuine reaction you have towards one specific person and replacing it with a subpar one that barely has a smidge of the emotion you wanted it to contain and it still leaves you overthinking if it’s way too much. Imagine being that on all the time. No wonder he was wound so tight and defensive all throughout s3. I too would lash out at anyone who dare speak to me if my brain was that full to capacity with thought. Not to mention all the other shit he’s dealing with on top of it.

Oh, one hundred percent. As I’ve mentioned before, El is now in Will’s place, and Mike struggles with that because he can’t have Will as just a friend. Because Will has never been just a friend. Mike tries to tone down how much he really cares for Will (noting that he didn’t start calling him “dude” till s3-s4) and instead tries to focus that onto El. Of course, it fails, because El is not meant to be in Will’s place. This, as you said, weighs on Mike, and he lashes out at two of the people closest to him. The fact that he has to pretend to treat Will just like any other friend, is pressured to love El the way he loves Will, and deal with all the upside down shit? It was too much for him, and he became closed off, to both El and Will and everyone around him.
