Thinking about just how much of the entirety of The Final Reckoning depends on Ethan and Benji being precisely on the same page at every point, on Benji being able to decipher to the last smallest detail what the plan is, how Ethan puts his life on the line, fully depending on Benji knowing what he is going to do and his team getting there in time to save him.
It's not just that they are on the same wavelength. It's that they know that they are. They know it for certain, enough to bet everything on it.

observation: among a certain subset of tumblr users, the term “blorbo” has become unchic, but the concept it describes is still important; and so it has been replaced with “The Character”

I am fascinated by Jane Carter
- She’s the team leader. Not Hanaway - she is. Shows how skilled she is.
- As team leader, she would have chosen her team. Which means she chose Benji on his first ever field mission. We often talk about Ethan seeing past all the chatter and nervousness to see the worth of Benji, even more than Benji does, but Jane saw that too.
- Jane had the courage to fall in love in the field but then she lost the one she loved. I can see her warning Benji - don’t fall in love with Ethan. It won’t end well.
- she stuck by Ethan even when she had no reason to trust him
- She’s very competent and skilled in the field, flawlessly playing Moreau despite the last minute change in plans. Getting the nuclear codes very quickly, and very satisfactorily beating that bloke up.
- Yes, she killed Moreau but she didn’t mean to - if the window wasn’t open it wouldn’t have happened.
- Thank all the gods of film making that she didn’t go into the fight in her party dress and heels (in fact she always takes her heels off to fight). I am so tired of action heroines who have to fight in a party dress and heels. She got changed in the car, very sensibly and totally uncaring that Ethan was there to. (And Ethan was very gentlemanly - had a quick moments panic that a beautiful woman was getting changed in his car and then resolutely ignored her because she’s his colleague)
- She got shot and stayed standing. It was Benji who insisted she not go down and confront Wistrom
- she recovered!
And then she disappeared. No more mention of her. Which on one way is very irritating but in another means we can play with her in our fics. She always comes across as strong, independent, decisive, skilled and a friend to Benji and I’m so delighted we all read that into her.
Anyway. Love Jane Carter. Kind of sad we never found out what happened to her or saw her again.

A wizard that regularly breaks into the gem shop where magical gemstones are cut from rough stone into their more commonly known sparkly faceted shapes - but he doesn't steal any of them. He sweeps the floor. Bags the stone crumbs and shards and dust he sweeps up. Breaks out again. The goblins who run the gem shop never bother to investigate why the floor just cleans up on its own, they assume that they've got a house elf or something.
So the wizard takes the shards and all, and grinds them all into evenly sized teeny tiny crumbs, and mixes them all together. The magic gemstone chips and crumbs become something new: magic pocket sand. Nobody knows what it'll do to you if he throws it at you. Least of all him.

this is a bit off topic from the post by @rebeccasteventaylor that inspired it, but as far as Ethan and Benji and skillsets go -
kind of fascinated by the idea of Ethan always having been a bit of an adrenaline junkie but getting into more dangerous solo stunts with no one around for miles after m:i1 in a bit of a nihilistic moment. and then the nihilism passes, but he can start to see the utility of having these extreme skills on missions and so he keeps pursuing them (ADHD lateral thinking curse strikes again). and then things start to snowball, because he has such a specialized ability that the really crazy missions with really tight timelines are all funneled to him, and sometimes he misses just being a really fit linguistics/theater/drama major with a talent for voices.
and as far as Benji goes - being in the field during GP and knowing they have no one to call for help with specialized tasks must have been a great impetus for wanting to build out his own skillset. and he probably enjoys the idea of being the person Ethan is most likely to call in a pinch too, and being able to distinguish himself from Luther as more of a jack-of-all trades (i can imagine him hearing that Luther went scuba diving at the end of GP and thinking oh, i'd better learn that too).
they match each other so well as a combination of breadth/depth of knowledge, and then Luther's been there all along to provide Mariana Trench levels of technical depth that neither of them have the time or inclination to pursue. the perfect trio ^^

so I posted this and then I got carried away and wrote it. If anyone’s interested it’s here. My little wish for something we could have had in Final Reckoning.

Honestly it boils down to reparenting yourself & rewiring your own neuronal pathways & telling yourself a firm “stop” when you notice your mind slipping down negative loopholes & being present in the moment & enjoying being mid task rather than waiting for it to end & not thinking of inertia as your baseline and natural way of living
