My "Hospo Hands" Video for Design Ethnography. ‘Hospo Hands’ explores a small part of the Hospitality Industry. Set at a bar and restaurant, the story follows the different areas of the industry that play key parts in the overall business. The focus is on the hands and the sensory interaction taking place between designed objects for the bar as well as designed systems which have been set by the owners of the site. The story begins with the drinking side of “Hospo”, showcasing the bar flare, the drinking, surrounding to give the viewer a taste of the atmosphere and the fun. This transitions into the kitchen, the behind the scenes work of preparing food. Back into the bar shifts to the cleaning stage of working hospitality, polishing cutlery, glasses, the time when chefs sign off and have a cigarette, the cleaning sheets get filled out, tills get counted and the day gets evaluated while sitting in the closed bar having a night cap. Having “Hospo hands” is a career as well as a lifestyle, I have tried to give an insight to the little personalities and skills each pair of hands brings to the bar and a glimpse into some of the things that happen behind the scenes.

Final images for project three
For this project I have decided to document the doorways of places I feel connected to growing up. These are the doorways of places I know no matter what is going on in the world I will be welcome and safe in these spaces. They are sanctuaries and represent belonging. I chose to take these photos at night to invite the viewer into the doorway and pull them into the warmth. To me, these photos are comforting and familiar as I know what is inside but I know for those who haven’t visited these places before, other emotions might be experienced.
I really struggled with datagraphy because I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that its about collecting data and not creating it like we might normally with photography and design.
In saying this I am happy with the skills I have learnt and defiantly know where I need to improve and what areas of this I would like to continue to explore. From this project I will invest in a shutter release cable and continue to learn how to use my camera more effectively. I struggled with my night time photos as I could never get the balance between light and the sharpness of the photo. If I had more time I would have liked to present these images in a fold out photo holder, something small that I could carry around when I need comfort if I’m away from home.

This was my plan B project where I asked my flatmate Rachel to set an alarm and take a photo at 3:33 every day for a week and I would do the same. The differences are quite interesting seeing what she chose to take photos of and how it was mostly objects where as I chose to take photos of the people I was with.

I got asked by my work to make a menu for their pop up bar, unfortunately the pop up bar closed before the menus got to be printed and I never got the prices of those tequilas haha. I was still pretty proud of this

DSDN104 Digital Creation. This paper was a massive challenge for me as we used software I had never used before and I get anxious when I have to do something I'm not sure how to do which isn't a good attitude at all I know but it just happens.

DSDN141 Experimenting with Materials. This paper was fun but very frustrating because I was in a very bad place mentally at the time and creativity wasn't happening for me. I got very average marks for this paper

DSDN111 This wasn't one of my favourite papers at Vic as it was more of an industrial paper and I tend to get stuck on lots of different ideas rather than focusing on one and doing a good job of it. This paper was a classic example.
