Buffaloware Sample Plate, ca. 1975

Buffaloware Sample Plate, ca. 1975. molded and glazed earthenware. Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment. 2005-11-3.
Sample plates give us an idea of the colors and techniques that were fashionable during different periods. This ceramic plate is part of Oneida Ltd’s Buffalo line, a ceramic manufacturer that started out under the name the Buffalo Pottery Company in Buffalo, New York, became Buffalo China Inc. in 1940, and was later acquired by Oneida. During World War II, Oneida supplied the United States government and thereafter produced wares mainly intended for use in restaurants, trains, and ships, although many were custom orders. This plate from the 1950s shows a full range of available colors encircling a gilt buffalo. The plate also has a black buffalo mark, on a smaller scale, on the reverse. The colors reflect the design ethos of its era and can be seen in combination in some of the patterned wares from the Buffalo line.
