Whoever came up with the name “Carpenter Bee” was either very high or very stupid (or perhaps he just had a wickedly sarcastic sense of humor) because THIS is not what a real #carpenter does. The definition of a Carpenter is “a person who builds or repairs wooden objects and structures.” Well, folks, I’ve closely examined dozens of exposed Carpenter Bee tunnels, and I haven’t found a shred of evidence to indicate that building or repairing wooden objects or structures ever occurred. Apparently, somewhere in my workshop is a secret clubhouse where 281 obnoxious pencils are hiding from me, causing me to lose my temper and yell bad words whenever I try to find the pencil I used ONLY 30 SECONDS BEFORE!! That’s why I’m very excited about this nifty little gadget, which I found at #HomeDepot for under $3. (The manufacturer calls it the “Pencil Pull XL”, but I call it the “Pencil Prison.”). After 5 days of captivity, the attached pencil still hasn’t escaped to join his compadres in the secret clubhouse, which means I haven’t yelled a single bad word for almost a week—except on Saturday, when the brand new blade on my table saw somehow managed to find two large nails buried deep inside a reclaimed 2x6. Today I’ve seen several posts by loving wives posting loving comments about loving things done by loving husbands on this loving day known Mother’s Day. I have a question for those “loving husbands”; Do you really believe that flowers, candy, a greeting card, breakfast in bed, or a fancy brunch at an expensive restaurant are adequate ways to express appreciation for a woman who endured the discomfort of pregnancy and the pain of childbirth just to bring YOUR children into the world???? After 13 hours of “low & slow” smoking, this big ol’ 11-lb. pork shoulder is ready for its final act before becoming picture perfect piles of pulled pork. I became infatuated with this little beauty as soon as I started applying the finish. It has everything I ever wanted in an end table; reclaimed wood, wonderful texture, contrasting colors, and lots of scars and blemishes. And I’ve always been a sucker for long torched legs. This post is for those who’ve never seen my tender, kindhearted, fuzzy side. I consider every living creature a miracle, and I enjoy capturing images of them in their natural environment. 7 months ago, my lovely wife retired from the U.S. Postal Service after almost 35 years of service. Instead of relaxing and enjoying the easy retirement she deserves, this unstoppable force of nature is busier than ever. She babysits our grandkids one or two times a week, she’s not afraid to lend a hand in the never ending renovation of Reclaimed Wood Goods’ International headquarters, she enjoys accompanying me during supply runs, and, best of all, she doesn’t get mad at me when I make stupid faces in our selfies.
