Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
this post is a messy jumble of personal thoughts and a half assed “review” on pride and prejudice. this is one out of two books I’ve read since I was 15 and my first book of 2025 don’t take any of this serious actually don’t read it at all
i started this book january 1st and finished only today, may 19. i wanted to start getting into literature and specifically classics; so I started with this. i didn’t realize how much i liked romance until i read this book, mr darcy reminds me of all of my favorite fictional crushes lololol.
Let it be known that I kept getting Jane and Elizabeth’s names mixed up.
Elizabeth is such a relatable protagonist, a part that stuck out to me was when she was getting embarrassed because of her mom. too relatable, eliza.
The first line of this book that stuck out to me was “…for he is such a disagreeable man that it would be quite a misfortune to be to be liked by him.”, i literally had to underline it because it made me laugh. again, reminds me too much of some of my crushes.

IT ALL CIRCLES BACK TO YOU…. IT ALWAYS HAS!!!
I specifically wrote this down in my notes on january 3rd, when I was still trying to read a little bit everyday:
“Mr. Darcy being considered popular and being so much hotter than Mr. Bingley, just for everyone at the party to hate him once he opens his mouth and flaunts his arrogance, reminds me of a certain character…” Though, Mr. Darcy greatly redeems himself by the end of the book. This ugly sucker below only gets worse and worse as the series goes on

Well, back to the book.
I sat in the middle of my lecture literally biting the inside of my cheek when mr darcy showed up at Elizabeth’s place to confess to her. ouuuuuuu … and I thought him breaking up the marriage between bingley and Jane would be a miscommunication, but to know he actually did it??? I don’t even blame elizabeth for ripping into him like that. Get his ass, girl.
other things I underlined…
“…mingled incredulity and mortification.” That is such a good way to describe someone’s expression and how they’re feeling… ough. definitely stealing that for when I’m writing fanfic next time.
“His complexion became pale with anger… He was struggling for the appearance of composure.” I love the way Austen writes so much. I don’t know exactly why I underlined these I think I just really liked her choice of words and I could imagine Mr Darcy trying not to explode in that moment.

For some reason I also highlighted an entire part of chapter 34, where Mr Darcy shows up and immediately starts asking Elizabeth how she’s doing. I also have the line of him beginning his confession underlined. That moment was toooooo exciting for me. I realy really loved the part where it describes Darcy as pretending to be apprehensive and nervous of Elizabeth’s response, but internally he’s so confident that she’ll return his feelings because he’s just such a catch. Real dreamboat.
It should have been cliche that Mr Darcy would return to his estate WHILE Elizabeth and her aunt/uncle were touring and that they’d meet again, but for some reason it caught me so off guard. It’s just smack dab in the middle of the page like an ordinary paragraph BUT HE CAME BACK))) AN SHES STILL IN HIS HOSUE?!!

I literally went “What the hell” out loud. I could post thousands of lines of Mr Darcy making me raise my eyebrow. What’s his damage?
Darcy’s sister is so cute. Her shyness was unexpected but again, all too relatable when I was her age. I love her. Cutie patootie. Never change Georgiana. Darcy trying to get her and Elizabeth to make conversation in chapter 45 was cute.
“The death of your daughter would have been a blessing in comparison of this.” (In regards to Lydia having ran off with Wickham). WTF Collins? LMFAOA and he’s gossiping to Lady Catherine and her daughter about it? What is his problem 😭 He is such a jackass.
“Let me advise you then blah blah blah your child sucks and you should deem her as unlovable because she’s embarrassing your whole family.” Never change, Mr. Collins
My favorite characters were Elizabeth and Darcy of course, closely followed by Lydia and Mr. Collins. I want to tie Wickham to a wooden cross and light it on fire. Mrs. Bennett is so ridiculously shameless that I can’t bring myself to dislike her.

I love u Elizabeth. overthinker. Just like me .
“Anxious and uneasy, the period which passed in the drawing-room, before the gentleman came, was wearisome and dull to a degree that almost made her uncivil.” I just imagine Elizabeth tapping her fingers on the armrest of whatever chair she’s sat on, tuning out everyone’s conversation and wondering where Darcy is. She’s sooooooo me
“And on the gentleman’s approaching, one of the girls move closer to her than ever, and said, in a whisper, “The man shan’t come and part us, I am determined. We shant want none of them; do we?” Lizzy is better than me I would’ve started smacking people
I kind of feel like the whole “you will not marry my nephew 🤬” happened a little too close to the end for my taste. I wish it was set up earlier on but also this book took me 6 months to read so I’m not sure if my issue is with the pacing of the story or the pacing of my reading.
“The happiness which this reply produced was such as he has probably never felt before…” EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
“Those were your words. You know not, you can scarcely conceive, how they have tortured me…” I like this book very much.
Tumblr media
My final verdict: 9/10. I loved this book a lot and want to read more by Austen :). The long sentences broken up by commas and the use of whatever ‘ is over whatever “ is was a little jarring, but I got used to her writing style pretty quickly. The ending was very short but I can’t say it felt rushed or forced. I’m adding the movie adaptations to my watch list.
