In terms of what she actually wears, it’s often dictated by the situation and her position. Her dress must evoke emotion, whether it’s awe, fear, or something else. However, her personal sense of style is much more muted. As might be surmised from her wild hair and personality, she’s never cared much for fineness in her life, so when she chooses her own clothing, it tends to be practical over fashionable.

Norita

While Norita has been mentioned in a previous post, little has been said of the pegasus’ personality.

Norita was never a difficult pegasus to train, which was intentional: Mikoto did not want to give a child some unruly stallion, after all. Even then, she and Hinoka grew attached with stunning ease, becoming friends almost overnight. It took less than a month of rearing for Norita to become comfortable with Hinoka on her back, while some pegasus riders can take months to get their steeds to truly accept them.

Norita was as brave as Hinoka, becoming accustomed to the chaos of battle after a few weeks of training exercises. When a true battle came around in the aforementioned border skirmish, Norita followed Hinoka’s instruction easily, swooping in and out of the fray to strike at Faceless with her hooves.

When not training, she would graze while Hinoka cleaned and brushed her fur, mane, and wings. She and Hinoka would fall asleep together when Hinoka was still a child, but eventually Hinoka’s retainers got the princess to stop falling asleep in the stables, to Norita’s disappointment.

Pegasus Knight

Hinoka’s pegasus companion, Norita, was raised by Hinoka herself (and, in a way, raised Hinoka). They grew up together, with Hinoka receiving the filly when she was only 6 years old. Proper care for her steed was drilled into her ever since she received the pegasus, and she spent as much time feeding, brushing, and cleaning up after Norita as she spent training with her. They were truly inseparable, to the point where Hinoka’s retainers would sometimes find her passed out in the stables, using Norita’s wing as a blanket.

Their first true mission together came when Hinoka was 13 years old. She accompanied a squad of samurai on a week-long patrol along the Nohrian border. This quickly turned into her first combat, as well, when they found Faceless moving to attack a farming community. Hinoka was extremely inexperienced, and most of the fighting fell to the hardened samurai, but she displayed extraordinary bravery and skill with a lance for her age.

As the years wore on, Hinoka grew more and more skilled. On occasion, she even accompanied a group of ninjas on during raids into Nohrian territory, desperate to find the prison her half-sibling was held in. Every attempt ended in failure, but with Hinoka watching for patrols from the sky, they were never caught in the act.

Hinoka’s time with Norita came to a close in the battle for the Hoshidan palace. While they both performed extremely well, an unseen Nohrian sniper managed a lucky shot past Hinoka’s magic shield. The arrow struck Norita in the heart mid-flight, and she crashed into the ground, landing atop Hinoka and pinning her as the Nohrians closed in. Her life was spared by Corrin’s kindness, but Norita was beyond saving. Hinoka was pulled out and hugged Norita tightly as the pegasus’ last breaths came out.

The queen has been forced to put her pegasus riding behind her, as almost the entire Hoshidan pegasus company is composed of foals. She focuses on her spear fighting now, a task which is daunting with the differences between fighting mounted and grounded. She hopes one day to ride again, but it will not be for years to come.

What is the worst part of being a ruler?

“I would say the loss of self. Nothing I do anymore can be done without consideration for the country. Before, when I was confident someone else would rule, I could live my own life, pursue my own passions. That’s not possible when I wear the crown and sit upon the throne.”

“…Not all the rebels, Your Highness. Not the ones who mattered at least.” Is what Leslie finally says after taking in the atmosphere and room he has been taken. He knows he will not be able to handle the ninjas and the guards should they all attack, and he knew this was a possible outcome should he show his face here. But he no longer had a cause to fight for, so all he could do now was pass on the important notes he was left. 

Which is why he began to dig around in his pocket, feeling everyone’s eyes on him as he produces a worn envelope, sealed with a Hoshidan stamp. “…There is not much I can do for the rebellion these days. But Scarlet was a friend, and your late brother Ryoma meant a lot to her. I met him once actually, if only briefly because he wanted to get this to Scarlet….I never got the chance before….” Leslie trails off, instead simply holding out the envelope for the Queen to take.

She watched him carefully while he reached into his pocket, as did her guards. She all he pulled out was an envelope, she reached out and took it from him. She flipped it over in her hands, then broke the seal to open it and read it silently.

“My brother told me Scarlet was quite the warrior,” she mentions after reading it once. “I wish I’d met her, he said we would’ve gotten along well. Unfortunately, your former king was every bit the tyrant you believed him to be.”
