Kimiko and Clay's teamwork and synergy is so underrated
They were both utterly helpless against Wuya's golem soldiers individually
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But together they can reduce one to a puddle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And look at their smiles, they're so proud of each other

Alright, but an arc where Wuya forces herself to make friends with Kimiko and the monks or be destroyed.  Kimiko finally having a girl to do girl stuff with.  Wuya finally having a modern, female human to coach her through being solidly again.  Kimiko and Wuya getting mani pedis together.  Wuya’s nails have birds on them, Kimiko’s have pandas.  Shoe shopping together, only to find that Wuya’s feet are kind of big and she doesn’t like wearing “foot prisons.”  Wuya discovering the comforts of a wedge heel sandal!  Everyone going back to being mortal enemies, but the super kawaii photos of Wuya and Kim are still floating around facelook, and just the unresolved feels between both.
At the end, Jack notices the pictures and his only comment is “you hung out with Kimiko?!”

This might be a silly question but what language is spoken in the show?
Because the temple is probably Chinese along with the scroll therefore Omi most likely learned mandarin, does that mean that Raimundo, Kimiko and Clay speak it also? Maybe because they were destined to be dragons they were made to learn it?
But then what about Jack Spicer? I don't remeber his nationality being mentioned but he seems a westener and didn't seemengly have any reason to learn any language besides coding for his inventions. Or what about any other characters like Mime, Katnappe and so on?
It could be made easier if Omi was thought different languages since early age including English, which would also explain the way he speaks (and make Clay monolingual lol), and the rest of the cast knowing it due to the fact that it is the overall most known language across the globe.
But then, what about Wuya? How could she know about the english language before being sealed for decades in the box? Could she hear other people while she was inside it and learned it that way?
I probably shouldn't think about it too much and add this to cartoon logic, I just couldn't resist since thinking about a multilingual Italian oc to add to the show :')
Tumblr media
Will you two please stop abusing the English language?
The language they seem to speak in the show is English. (Usually*)
That's part of the reason why Omi's speech is so stilted and why he trips up on idioms so much. It doesn't seem to be his native tongue.
Tumblr media
Omi's English handwriting also suggests he hasn't had very much practice writing in the language.
So before coming to the Chinese Xiaolin temple, the kids all apparently learned English to be able to have a shared language to communicate in.
Also presumably because they were going to have to be traveling around the world a lot during Shen Gong Wu hunts, so English was versatile to know. Like you said, Omi's probably had lessons in a lot of languages to help prepare for global missions since a young age.
Conveniently, English happens to be a language that the other major characters of the show are already fluent in. Jack and Katnappe are rich schoolkids in STEM, Pandabubba is an international crimeboss, Jermaine and Jesse are USAmericans, Chase and Guan are both ployglots who have traveled to all corners of the world, ect. (Le Mime is an interesting case since he doesn't speak at all.)
Tumblr media
There are some other characters like Vlad and Tubbimura who are implied to have some difficulties with English similar to Omi's. But Tubbimura only entered the show because he was responding to Jack's English-language ad, and Vlad was also recruited directly by Jack as someone who needed to be able to talk to the monks, so part of their recruitment requirements were rudimentary English skills.
Tumblr media
The scrolls in the temple are definitely written in Chinese though.
Tumblr media
And the kids all read them, so they also had to learn written Chinese before joining the temple (or while they were at the temple).
Wuya was around up until around 500 AD when she was sealed, so old English was around for her to have picked up. But she speaks pretty modernly, and with none of the difficulty that characters like Omi and Tubbimura have.
Tumblr media
But Wuya is also highly adaptable, and she's been around "since before men were crawling out of the mud" according to her. She probably picked up the intricacies of the new dialects as easily as she picked up how to use new technologies.
Hannibal Roy Bean has Ying-Ying, who can't free him but can show him scenes she records of the outside world. He can also crawl directly into people's heads and commune with their psyches. Language is not difficult for him to pick up.
*However, when Omi travels to the past, I think the language actually being spoken between the characters is Chinese. Specifically Middle Chinese, which Omi is probably more familiar with with the modern incarnation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One interesting thing about when Omi is speaking in the past with Dashi or with Chase is that we don't see him making any malapropisms during any of these scenes.
(And it's not a silly question at all! I've pondered about the specifics of it too, it's a fun thing to try to make sense of!)

My tribute to Xiaolin Showdown! This is probably the most complex piece I've worked on, and certainly with the most subjects. I've added closeups of the 2 halves underneath the full image. Original sketch from 2014 and, per usual, I cleaned it up to my current standards.
Also! Since I don't know where else to mention this, I was obsessed with the fact Kimiko changed outfits every episode. When I rewatched it back in 2010 I drew every outfit of hers as I watched LOL
