Last I checked like...a month ago? They didn't have black mouth cur in their database.

Yeah, basically. Val technically COULD be considered one.

But people on reddit will apply it to any dog with black masking. Including dogs that are clearly a specific breed (like a German shepherd)

My dad took chewby over to his friends house with him and val is beside herself

Poor baby was howling and scratching at the door

And she was restless and pacing for a good 5 minutes after they left

People on reddit also seem to think that val is a ridgeback

Which. She very well might be part ridgeback. Tho I have never seen one near where I live. Or in person at all for that matter. But I also haven't ever seen any coonhounds in person (I do frequently see mixes of them in shelters tho)

And she DOES look very similar in the face. But redbones and ridgebacks have very similar faces. And coloring. The only thing that makes her appear a little more ridgeback is her ears. Theyre much closer in length to ridgeback ears.

However. She doesn't have a ridge (not too surprising if she's a mix. Idk how strong that gene is) but ridgebacks are also known for being relatively quiet dogs. They only really bark to alert you.

Val barks constantly. Not to alert necessarily. At least not when people are outside like chewby does. But when chewby is hogging the toys? Or she loses at tug? Or chewby is ignoring her? Just. All the time lol.

Shes also a lot tinier than ridgebacks tend to be. Shes much closer to the smaller end of redbones. Obviously she could still get closer in size. She's only 4 months old (as of tomorrow if her birthday is accurate)

Her bark is also very coonhound

I hope you don’t mind that Im only answering this part of your question, but it was a lot to reflect on and unpack.

I think the best way I can describe it is like…. You know how when you do a puzzle, and most people start with the border and work their way inwards?

I think that most people are just the border of a puzzle.

I can look at a crowd and kind of guess whose finished picture is a landscape, or a bunch of balloons, or a classical painting. The colours and shapes give an impression that makes everybody a tiny bit different.

But then like… a LOT of people are puzzles of, say, a field of white flowers. And I can only see the border, so I have to think of like… which borders have more flowers or more grass, more grass or more sky, etc, and whatever is in the middle isn’t even put together yet.

But if someone’s border has, say, something fluorescent yellow in the top left- that makes them easier to differentiate from all the other field-of-white-flowers puzzles. I can remember that. And then later if the bottom half of the puzzle is covered, I can still see the big spot of neon yellow at the top, and remember that no other field-of-white-flowers have that.

And then like…. The more I see them, or the more unique features the have like tattoos or scars or birthmarks or whatever, unique proportions or deformities or injuries or gaits- the more pieces are filled in. So I can retain more parts of the picture in my head

So now instead of just being another border of a puzzle of a field of white flowers, YOU are a windmill in a field of white flowers, or a castle in á valley of white flowers, or a mix of white and red flowers.

And if I see someone often enough for long enough, I get so many pieces in their ten-thousand-piece puzzle that even with a few gaps, I still know exactly who they are, and can still pick them out of a crowd. Because I’ve filled in enough of the picture to know what it is

But until I’ve been in consistent contact with you over several years, the first two sketches are how you exist in my head

And from what I’ve heard from other people with face blindness, it’s not even the same for everyone

Puppy has discovered that carrots feel good on sore gums

Puppy about to lose some teeth and keeps whining

It's making knowing if she needs to potty very difficult

Val has officially lost off leash in the backyard privileges

She had some spots she'd been pooping in the bushes or behind trees so she'd have snacks for later

I took the dogs for another drive but it was a little too much for val

I shouldve turned around at the first mile marker at the lake but I pushed through and poor baby was stressed

Shes doing better now but gonna take a few steps back here

Practice getting into the car on her own and just sitting in it. Then maybe a short drive around the block. Then once she's doing OK with that we'll go back to the lake. Need to remember to take treats with me. Cuz right now the car is just scary and stressful
