I'm taking this as an opportunity to dissect my bennshanks playlist (i have over 20 songs on this but I'll pick the most impactful) tyvm. this is going to be a LONG post

1 - putting the dog to sleep by the antlers. fey (@kenway) showed me this song while i was DEEP into bennshanks and i genuinely got so overwhelmed with emotion that i went on a walk listening to this and cried.

it's so quintessentially bennshanks in the trust and love they have for each other, that even so they still try to hide their flaws but ultimately (shanks, especially) show their vulnerable sides (often only to the other) in an effort for trust and easy affection and simple understanding.

The dog motif also really gets to me because ofc it does. #1 lyric from here that i associate with them is "I can't prove to you you're not gonna die alone / but trust me to take you home / to clean up that blood all over your paws"

2 - northern attitude by noah kahan and hozier - two of my favourite artists in general, this song is benn beckman in a nutshell. my favourite north blue boy, asking for forgiveness from his captain that he may not show enough outwardly affection and lovingness, apologizing in advance if he's not enough, not "how you hoped..." ohhhh this song makes me insane. my favourite are specifically the last two lines of the song - lines from the chorus, but they're sung with such emotion. calm and gentle and strong but also oh-so-devoted. "forgive my northern attitude / oh, i was raised on little light"

3 - hell or flying by jeremy zucker - do you ever think that maybe beck saw how shanks spoke of rayleigh and roger and became terrified it would happen to them? that he wouldn't be able to protect his captain, that first mates outliving their captains would forever remain a fact? literally the first two lines of the song are "I'm petrified / that you're dying by design" and then further in the song is "i will lay down by your side / i will keep an open eye / while you stare into the sun" chefs kiss.

4 - king and lionheart by of monsters and men. this song... childhood classic but now i cry about gay old men to it. Not as much reasoning to this one it's kinda just the vibe of an inseparable bonded pair. soulmates etc. love the lyrics "as the world comes to an end / i'll be here to hold your hand"

5 - mi capitán by kiltro - ending on a banger. what a classic one piece ship song for captain/first mate duos. overused, maybe, but there's a reason it's so good. about devotion and giving over of the soul, body, and heart to this man that is more than a decade your younger but has captivated you so wholly you can't imagine a world where you don't stand by his side. ALL of the lyrics from this song are so good are you kidding???

"do i need you, my hope, my gun?" - HELLOOOOO at the start of onep when beck does shanks' dirty work for him ??? acts as his gun so that his captains hands may remain a little less bloodied?????

"cause these hands / build and break, just what you ask they do" - the unconditional DEVOTION folks. JUST WHAT YOU ASK THEY DO ????? i feel insane.

"and these bones / are etched in scars there left defending you" that scar on beck's temple it has to be from taking a hit for his captain. beck isn't typically one to fight in close combat (see: kizaru) but his captain is. he has pledged allegiance to this man and will spend his last breath defending him

"do i owe you my everything / my heart, my liege, my second birth" ohhhh my god. perfectly aligns with my belief that young teen shanks picked up beck from some bumfuck island where he was making nothing of his life and gave him everything. a reason to not just live but to breathe and work and smile and love

Benn calls Shanks “Darlin’” a lot without realizing it and every time Shanks whips his head around with a huge smile because he’s a total romantic. It’s happened a couple of times during a fight and Shanks has creeped many an enemy out with his sudden, over-the-top smile.

Shanks once responded with “Yes, Hubby?” and Benn damn near combusted.
