PLOT DROP - part one

Just over a year ago, the graveyard night shift claimed they heard a train engine passing in the distance. Given the landscape, how sounds echo down from the mountains and out again, the statement was dismissed. No point in hiking up into the hills for the nearest train track - even if a train had been there in the night, it'd be long gone in the light of day. The sound came again by this morning's light. Only this time the distant chugging is interrupted by an explosion. Anyone looking to the western sky at the time can see twisted shrapnel of glass and steel and fire flung through the air, raining over the land.

POTENTIAL TASKS:

Outside note: You must be accompanied by a Raider, Hunter, and/or Security fit to travel over roughly 10 miles in either direction and capable of combat.

Investigate:

The immediate danger is fire catching / spreading through the dense forest. Past that, there will be all manner of walkers and humans drawn to the noise, and shrapnel of potentially dangerous material spread around. Since the site isn't precisely known, nor the amount of trouble waiting, it may actually be wise to approach from a few directions.

Scavenge:

On the other hand, there could be survivors, supplies - and clues as to the state of the wider world.

This is an option for multiple people / groups.

Encounter: Biters, other people, animals of West Virginia on approach or flight. (note: please inquire with Dove before involving Daybreakers.)

Inside

Fortify: How far along are the new towers? Is the clinic prepared for wounded returning?

Defend: Is there a way to make up for missing forces? Will the council assign positions or will residents offer their skills?

Remember: These are not the only possible actions! Just ideas to get you started.

Name: Liam Bryne Age: 45 Town Occupation: Hunter / Outside Security Previous Occupation: Legionnaire Redwood Resident Length: Old Redwood resident newly arrived Faceclaim: Pablo Schreiber

Bullet Points:

Liam is fluent in French , he does mostly use it with Tessa and Brady out of habit. They still refer to him as "capitaine" . It is also the language he uses to talk to his dog.

Liam trained Juno for detecting the undead and biting. She's a very intelligent and quick dog , a true asset.

On his trip , he aimed to look for information on what Penny had revealed. He found some data and samples he has brought back with him and plan to give to Penny eventually. He does not know if it is viable

Liam is really skilled to blend into forest/jungle areas, he used to be more of a tracker for David , but if he hunts, uses a crossbow instead of a rifle

Liam is an expert marksman , a lethal close -range combattant and lives still by the code of the Legionnaires

He's plagued by an underlining anger steming from different factors in his life , he loses patience rather quickly and will let you know. He hates cock fighting and finds it just ridiculous.

Biography:

Liam Bryne was born in Dublin to a modest family. His father was a teacher and his mother worked at a hotel nearby. His younger years, he spent a lot in the places nobody knew about at the hotel and the people there became some sort of extended family to him. There were no tragic events in his youth, and while he was not the best at school, he managed to stay away from most troubles. This would end when at 18 , his parents died in a car accident. It had been a harsh winter, the road was slippery, the car fell down a ravine. Liam survived but endured being with his parents for more than a day. He realized at the hospital how alone he was, how fast life could end and how lost he was. It took months for him to figure out what to do and get out of the grief enough to think of a future. He sold the house, he sold everything, and left. While Dublin had given him life, it had also taken his family, thus becoming a tomb to him.

He roamed through Europe for a while, trying to forget the accident, the smells, the pain. Liam tried to heal, but it seemed like the more he pushed it all away, the more it ate him. It came to the point where he decided to knock on that fateful iron gate in Paris. The emblem on the gate read “légion étrangère”  (foreign legion).  He had listened to people talking about it and felt compelled to give it a try. Their reputation was worldwide, respected and maybe feared by many, he did find a way in being a legionnaire. The training was intense to the point of him feeling physically sick, but it was also cathartic. For the first time since his family died, he felt like he belonged to this unit, brothers in arms. He would finish top of his class and go become a paratrooper.

By the time the virus hit, Liam acting captain was on a mission in South America. From the company a lot died within the first hours of contact. Long months followed; the orders last in were to go up to Canada. He was honestly not sure they would make it. In the end, only two remained by his side: Tessa and Brady. The trio eventually stumbled on Penny when Liam was wounded by savagers attacking. Even though he was injured, he put a lot of them down before collapsing. A fever struck and they stumbled on Redwood just in time to treat him. Showing the tough nature of being a Legionnaire, he was up and running before he should have. Honestly, he found hope in Redwood , and after discussing it with Tessa and Brady, they agreed that there wasn’t anyone to return to , probably. The radio had been still for a long time. So they joined, as hunters and protectors of the civilians. Their trio got a member more , a malinois he named Juno.

They were on a hunting trip when the reavers attacked but managed still come back to defend Redwood. A lot of blood was shed by the legionnaires on that day, who then proceeded to give them a burial themselves. Liam disagreed with a lot of the Beckett’s decisions but kept his anger at bay thanks to Penny. That , sadly only lasted until a night around a bonefire and a revelation that would push him off a wrong end. After a violent fight with her, the day after, he decided to leave, not giving any explanation, not even to David with whom he had bonded closely. In fact, he left things sour with a lot of people as he left. Tessa decided to join him, while Brady decided to remain. It has been months now, but it seems that a familiar face is to make a return to Redwood, bringing a cart with food and materials from his time away.

thoughts on a character that came back to redwood either after being asked to leave, or having left on their own accord?

When it comes to a previously kicked out Redwood member, they would not be accepted back to the community on account of their 'crimes' would've had to have been dire to be kicked out in general. However, Redwood would most definitely accept a previous Redwood member who left on their own accord.

Name: Foster Hayes Age: 42 Town Occupation: Graveyard Nightshift 2 Previous Occupation: Journalist Redwood Resident Length: Newly Arrived Faceclaim: Michiel Huisman

Bullet Points:

Has been accused more than once of using his chronicling as a way of staying removed from events. Foster strongly disagrees. He feels he's refusing to look away from reality. Truth likely falls somewhere between.

Had been at work on his first long-form novel when Lucien left him.

Biography:

He was going to be a writer. But when you'd barely traveled, it was hard to come by inspiration. Journalism seemed a great step in that direction. Foster wrote for magazines, researched for other, published authors, and lived extremely cheaply the entire time.

Foster came home when his mother got sick. With his dad passing the summer before, and his sister unable to travel, he worried nobody would be around to advocate for the elder Foster. Nobody to get her to appointments, run out for prescriptions, and protect her dignity as the condition worsened.

He wouldn't appreciate until later that she'd asked to be cremated.

She'd left him the house, but it was too much space for a single man. The sale gave him several years of money to live off of, which Foster used to write his first book of short stories. When that was a modest success, he was able to improve his lifestyle from Very Cheap to Penny Pincher.

At a writer's retreat, he met Lucien Melaina, who was working on his third book. From friendly banter to emails after the retreat, Foster doesn't know exactly when they became A Thing. Two years later, Lucien's book is out, they're engaged and planning a move to Los Angeles.

Then Luc dumped him mid-press tour & mid-wedding planning. Hadn't even waited to break up in person, just called Foster in a fit of nerves and that was that.

The opportunity for a journalist to hit DC and report on rumors of a new viral outbreak was exactly what Foster thought he needed to distract his broken heart. When DC became uninhabitable, Foster packed what he could carry and hit the road. No natural survivalist, he learned by doing; testing what he'd only read about. His chronicle was the only constant, and Foster would collect fresh notebooks wherever he could. He'd take down the story of any survivor willing to share - although grand notions of an award-winning publication had long faded. Now... now it just felt like a moral imperative. Collect the stories. Share the stories. Keep people alive in the written word if nowhere else.

He isn't sure how long he'll stay here. But there are a hell of a lot of stories to collect in the meantime.

Name of Character: Matthew Kingston Age: 41-45 FC Suggestions: John Krasinski, Chris Evans, Chris Pine, Christian Bale, Ryan Reynolds, Tom Welling Background: Matthew and Penny relied on each other a lot growing up after their father left. Matthew did everything for Penny to achieve her goals. When Penny went off to college, Matt felt a little lost and had to find himself after that. Penny and Matt did escape from Washington D.C. together and have been together throughout the outbreak. The rest is UTP (but i encourage reading Penny's bio). Misc Information: One occupation Matthew could have is a security guard for Global-1 that Penny could've helped him get. Still feels as if their new life is her fault for not finding a cure for the virus and is afraid Redwood members might find out about her previous occupation, afraid of what they might do to her.

Was a huge fan of the Beckett's and even had a small crush on Oliver before he passed. Every now and then, Penny will visit Oliver's grave.

Works on perfecting her sewing craft on the daily but could mostly be found with the horses and farm animals.

Gets overwhelmed easily.

Took in Oliver's dog after his death; a red nose Pitbull named Riley.

At first, the family was the prime example of ‘picture perfect.’ That was until James left - no last words, no goodbyes. He was simply gone. Security joined James’ departure, along with the big house and time with their mother. Becoming a single mother overnight rang tough for Velma, but she did everything she possibly could to keep a roof over her children’s heads and food on the table. With no father figure and their mother constantly working, Penny’s older brother, Matt, watched over his younger sister, and the two grew close. Throughout their schooling, the siblings stuck by each other’s side, sticking up for one another when prompted and supporting each other when needed. 

High school was easy in terms of the material - being a straight-A student practically came naturally. However, when it came to making friends and being social, it was no walk in the park. At times the girl could be socially awkward, never knowing what to talk to her fellow students about as she wasn’t up to all the celebrity gossip and newest trends. While girls her age went to the mall and tried on clothes as if they were in a montage from a teen movie, Penny was reading up on the latest scientific discoveries in the medical world. The body fascinated her and how the body could heal itself with proper care. No one her age wanted to hear it. When it came time for college, Penny was accepted to Duke University for Biomedical Engineering then she moved to MIT, gaining her Ph.D. Her academics and medical journal articles caught a few eyes. By the time she graduated, Penny had several job offers, and Global-1 was one of them.

Accepting Global-1’s job offer was a no-brainer. They were offering a much larger compensation, living quarters - even offered a grant for a vehicle if needed. The incentives were flashy, and the environment was promising. When she arrived, Penny realized they were all for a reason.

The contract came with various Non-Disclosure Policies (NDA). Global-1 had a very strict no-social media policy; additionally, they could tap into any employee’s phone line claiming it was to protect the integrity of the company. There were many other red flags, but Penny’s eye was on the work, which was to find cures to a multitude of viruses that could wipe out the human race. It was just like her to try and help others. So, to do just that, Penny sacrificed her privacy and social life - or lack thereof - to work for the company. 

Came the day when one of the deadliest viruses each scientist was warned about was released. Penny had been running late due to an accidentally spilled coffee. After returning to her apartment to change and practically sprinting to the laboratory, security guarded the door, holding back anyone who tried to get in, stating there was a situation and they would be allowed in once everything settled. Immediately a feeling of dread washed over the woman. She knew something was wrong. With paranoia thick in her bones, Penny returned home to pack a bag with all her essentials and necessities, leaving behind everything she knew would not serve her well. Matt lived just around the corner. Finding her brother, Penny urged him to do the same and for them to get to a safe place out of the city, and they did just that.

A few weeks later, the siblings were held up in Penny’s cabin in the middle of nowhere. News of the viral outbreak had reached them. A slew of emotions hit the woman at once, but guilt lingered the longest - and continues to. If only she had found the cure … she was so fucking close. 

They believed their stay in the cabin would be forever, or at least until some government was able to figure out a cure and save the survivors. They’d pulled in a few stranglers but eventually were pushed out by savages. That’s when they found the Beckett farm, along with the Beckett family. CATHERINE BISSET (sophia boutella) is looking for her HALF-SIBLING

Name of Character: UTP Sparrow Age: 30-39 FC Suggestions: May Calamawy, Alia Shawkat, Mena Massoud, Ramy Youssef, open Background: This would be a younger half-sister or brother to Catherine Bisset.They share a father, the long-deceased cult leader Brother Sparrow. The children were all put into the foster care system and may have different names now. Catherine doesn't believe she's ever seen any of them since. Name: Emmit Hanson Age: 34 Town Occupation: Teacher / Supermarket Keeper Previous Occupation: Actor Redwood Resident Length: Newly Arrived Faceclaim: Chris Colfer

Despite being quite adamant that his father leaving didn’t bother him, the more it bothered him. He never told his mother this but he tried reaching out to his dad a few times - once on his sixteenth birthday and once to invite him to his wedding. Both times his father never answered.

A month before Darian was bitten, Darian found a young cat and gave him to Emmit as a gift. Emmit named him Jean. He was the last gift Darian ever gave him.

He has Darian’s and his wedding rings on his necklace and never goes anywhere without them.

Some of his more notable roles were in Music Camp as Kurt McKay for all six seasons, two seasons of Boston Hot as Tony Marks, Eye of the Storm as Carson Hale and Absolutely Gorgeous as Corey Dawes.

Biography:

From an early age, Emmit wanted to be a star. He loved music, he loved movies and he loved plays. When he was five his mother took him to see Les Miserables and he was head over little tiny Converse shoes in love with the lights and the show business. While his mother was incredibly supportive and did her best to get her son into acting lessons and music lessons, his dad was a real man’s man. When Emmit was eight his father left, having moved to Florida from Vancouver, but not before leaving signed divorce papers on the kitchen counter. Honestly, Emmit was fine with that. He never really got along with his dad so it was no skin off his back. His mother was worried, though, and had put him in counseling to work through his father leaving but even the therapist said that Emmit was a well-adjusted kid.

In middle school he got the star role in his first production. It was almost too perfect. Every production after he was either the lead or one of the main cast. The older he grew the more he started to really develop who he was and discovered his sexuality. To the surprise of no one, really, Emmit came out his freshman year of high school as gay. For the first few weeks he was bullied about it but much like the kid he was, he didn’t let it get to him. He was a tough kid and no one was going to get to him. After a while they gave up. It also helped that he became one of the most influential people in the Drama Club and his senior year, he was scouted by a talent agent who landed him in a few small movie roles.

Now Emmit loved the spotlight and he loved the movie business but eventually the fame started to become a bit too much. He took a break from acting to help with his mother who had suffered a heart attack. That’s when he met the handsome nurse who had been tending to his mom, Darian. The two hit it off rather quickly, although Emmit was somewhat new to relationships. Well, real relationships. He found joy in the romance and the dating and the sweet little things. They dated for a few years until Darian finally popped the question. The engagement was a lot shorter as they married in five months. Everything was perfect.

Until it wasn’t.

People were starting to come in sick and Darian had been working overtime at the hospital to help out. Emmit, having left the spotlight to support his husband, had been at home watching the news. That’s how he learned about the zombie outbreak. He quickly called the hospital to make sure Darian was okay. He was - thankfully. Darian came home and immediately the two began to plan on how to survive this. For a few months, everything was okay, but as the world changed and began to shut down, they knew they had to move. They couldn’t just hunker down and wait for everything to be okay. So they packed a few bags and began their trek South into the States after hearing about survivor settlements.

Eventually they found a small group that had been out hunting for their settlement and they took Darian and Emmit in. Everything was great, but eventually the settlement fell apart. The leaders were getting a little too totalitarian for their liking. So they left. Darian had a plan - they were going to head to the coast, find an ocean side property and build their own life together where they could grow old together. At least, that was the plan. A few weeks ago while on the road, Darian got bit by a Walker. Emmit stayed with him until he transitioned and when he did, he put him out of his misery. Now on his own, Emmit didn’t know what to do so he figured he would head further South and live the dream that he and Darian always wanted.
