I loved this joke when I first saw it. Even with context, a tape "exploding" would be pretty traumatic because it's not easy to wind those suckers up when they do explode. Plus think of how it feels for the poor cassette it happens to. It's such a niche joke, added to the fact one of the kids asks what a cassette is later on in the episode.

Also a semi-related thing, so the whole “Bumblebee making a joke out of one of Soundwave’s Cassettes exploding” clip was making the rounds on Twitter a few days ago or so, and I saw some people explain that apparently, exploding cassettes were an actual thing, which is basically just (from what I understand) the film inside “exploding”, but the cassette could be wound up again and fixed

And based on that, the more likely explanation is that the joke here was that Bumblebee was explaining the Cassette “exploding”, but because the kids don’t understand how cassettes work, they think he means that Cassette literally exploded

So most likely, assuming this was the intention of the line, that Cassette was fine, though probably incapacitated for the fight and had to be fixed (probably more like that one episode of g1 where all the bots got loopy due to their depleted Cybertonium, silly robot antics), but nothing too serious. Rumble probably didn’t die, at least not at this moment, it was just a silly thing that happened on the battlefield once

But now my main question is, who did the writers think was gonna get that joke? Like sure, they make another joke that the kids don’t really know about cassette tapes, that’s where the joke stems from, but like, who in their audience did they think would get the joke?

The other cassette joke I understand because I know what it is, and the joke is that the kids don’t because of how old they are, and by extension how dated the Cassettes in basic concept are. But like, this one you have to know this is a thing cassettes apparently did to get the joke, and I’m pretty sure you’d have to grow up at latest in the 80s or 90s to have that knowledge, at least not without elaboration on what Bumblebee meant, which we didn’t get

I mean, children aren’t going to get it, and I think anyone up to their 20s wouldn’t get it either. I’m 21 (even if that’s probably the middle of the spectrum) and I had no clue this was a thing they did, it wasn’t until reading those comments online that I heard about this. Are the parents supposed to be the ones who get it? Because while I can’t verify this, I’m pretty sure parents aren’t all watching this with their children, kids are probably watching it on their iPads or something, and probably wouldn’t ask about this joke anyways because they’d assume it’s the normal kind of explosion, wouldn’t they? Like sure, some parents would be watching it and getting it, but that’s likely a very small percentage of the audience

I don’t know, I’m aware this is a weird thing to get stuck on, it’s just that this is new information to me and now I’m confused as to who the joke was for. Also, I wanted to share this information because it recontextualizes the interpretation of that clip I’ve seen around, and that assuming that was the joke, Soundwave likely didn’t have a Cassette horribly die while he was starved of Energon

I see him going down the route of more as an anti hero/anti villain if they did go down this route. It could be fun, you could have him as a potential third faction starting. Even have disillusioned Decepticons and Autobots join him as GHOST or Starscream's plans are revealed.

Could be an interesting dynamic.

Also, I got this image from the Earthspark production bible, and I’m honestly very curious about how this original concept for Megatron would’ve gone down

Because from what I can tell, this wasn’t necessarily a case of him pulling a long con, he actually was trying to turn over a new leaf, but he felt betrayed by his friends so he left them to claim the Emberstone for himself. But it doesn’t necessarily say he turned evil again, and if he truly reformed, I don’t feel like he would’ve just gone back to what he did before, likely instead striking out on his own to claim the Emberstone. And he probably has relatively noble intentions, just wanting to save his species, he just doesn’t want to do it with the Autobots anymore

And I also wonder, how long would this separation from the Autobots go on? Would he eventually rejoin them after they try to make it up to him, or they form a temporary alliance against Mandroid, but he ultimately decides to not rejoin afterwards, or would they end up pushing him back into old habits?

I can only assume it was cut because it would’ve been too complicated to fit in while giving it the proper amount of attention it deserves, or something along those lines. But still, would’ve been cool to see

My brother and I watched Earthspark recently (we haven’t gotten around to Season 2 yet, my bad on that), and honestly, it was kind of hard watching Season 1 again for me because I know things get ruined, never answered/elaborated on, or concepts aren’t capitalized on

You can’t fully enjoy Starscream because you know the writers are going to ruin him, I feel like the war and Megatron in particular’s place in it should have been explored more, Schloder and Alex I feel like could have been an interesting dynamic given they’re both mega Bumblebee fans (and Schloder’s proven to be a good guy and there’s no threat now), and how Bumblebee deals with the fact that now there’s two of them

But I think the thing that pisses me off the most, at least right now, is that we never find out what Soundwave’s deal is, and we will never know, especially because I don’t think the show’s coming back at this rate

Like I get he’s mostly a one-off, most of the Cybertronian characters are; like Arcee or Grimlock or Tarantulas or Swindle. But like, most of them only needed that one episode to get their characters across or to deal with their arcs, they didn’t need that much more to explore them

But meanwhile Soundwave has this incredible grudge against Megatron, and we never get an explanation in his episode as to why. Yes, Megatron is a traitor to the Decepticons, but no other Decepticon reacts nearly as bad as Soundwave (though honestly his betrayal probably should’ve been explored more with them), and if they react badly, that reason is explained, like with Starscream or Shockwave. So why is Soundwave so different?

It feels like because his treatment of Megatron is so different from the others, there’s a special reason why he’s so mad at him. But what was it? I feel like there was a story there, we just never got it

I think Soundwave’s initial episode was good for showing the situation Megatron finds himself in in current day, and the disagreements between him and Optimus, as I’m pretty sure this was our first look at the complicated GHOST situation, the problem is it’s not elaborated on afterwards

And I wouldn’t even necessarily call it all Season 2’s fault, because I think Soundwave probably should’ve gotten another episode in Season 1 explaining him and Megatron. His episode was in the first batch of episodes, and then he’s just sort of standing around in then background for the rest of the season, and it’s very distracting

But that doesn’t really matter, because from Season 2 onwards Soundwave is yet again never elaborated on, and by this point I don’t think we’re ever getting that backstory, especially as they’re not even on the same planet anymore

Honestly at the end of the day, Frenzy and Lazerbeak were probably more important characters than Soundwave, since they at least had 1 or 2 more notable appearances

Like honestly, I don’t even know why Soundwave never really did anything after his debut. I don’t think it’s for the same reasons as someone like Grimlock, who has a likely more expensive voice actor in Keith David. As far as I’m aware, Soundwave’s VA, Sean Kenin Elias-Reyes, isn’t particularly famous, at least not to the level of other people like Keith David, or Alan Tudyk, aka the voice of Optimus, like the VA probably isn’t too expensive to not bring back. And I’m going to assume VA work is more flexible than live action work, so schedule issues are presumably not the problem, unless it was something else I don’t know about

I think I’m rambling at this point, I’m not entirely sure what I’m saying or how coherent this is, and I’ve probably repeated myself way too much. The point is, Soundwave seemed to have some sort of special beef with Megatron, or at least one not elaborated on in his debut, which makes it seem more significant (probably because he was the first of the Big 3 Decepticon Command that we met, though Starscream was also teased), or at least something we would learn more about. But then we never got that, Soundwave never did anything important again, and it really pisses me off because I have to know what happened, but the show didn’t tell me, and now it will never tell me

Also about that last post because I just thought of it, Megatron’s having a Julian of Norwich moment

(Sorry I just remembered my English reading. To summarize what I remember, she once got really sick, to the point of near death, and had a vision from God himself telling her the truth of the world or something like that. Divine knowledge)

I mean, it does kinda work as a comparison considering Megatronus Prime is like a messenger or an aspect of Primus. And it's less Primus telling him Divine Knowledge and more of a 'trying to shove Megatron in the right direction'.

That and he's also talking to 'dead souls' if you account for Kilo and the 'worst mother of the age'.

Megatron’s gonna wake up with so much knowledge and lore, if the SS Requiem weren’t on its way to corroborate and explain most of this knowledge (though even still he knew it before they got here), I feel like the Autobots would be at least mildly terrified, because like, how has he learned all this. If they believe it’s anything more than medically induced fever dreams

Probably be more terrifying if this was an established thing he did. Like he wakes up some days and has just obtained some knowledge from the great beyond

He's going to be like some ancient monk that took psychedlics, had some weird vision of inter-dimensional beings that make zero sense in the context of our universe and awoke spouting knowledge of deities beyond the veil. That and he's been talking to people who have been listed as dead for millions of years (Megatronus/Kilotronyx maybe Termagax). Most of the Autobots are gonna think he's utterly insane and that the sedatives and drugs have addled his processor in addition the EMP. Knockout would probably find it a little bit funny.

Not just the Autobots, think of how insane it would be for Soundwave and Starscream for Megatron to suddenly start talking about Scion or Kilotron, people they once knew personally and with legitimate knowledge of them that he could only know if he had been speaking with them.

I think the only one who would believe it would be Optimus considering he's probably had some weird experiences with the Matrix of Leadership. And to be fair, during his time as Lord Megatron, he would have had horrifying visions of Megatronus' life because of the Prime attempting to snap him out of his delusions.

Nothing seems to ever go right for the dude, poor Megs. And yeah, Terminus was done with Termagax's shit and neglect. The only thing he regrets with breaking their Sparkbond is that he couldn't take D16 with him because he loved his sparkling dearly.

I had a random thought that with Galvatron’s parents, his backstory is basically just like Jack Horner from The Last Wish, and I thought that was funny

He really fucking is. Rich ass parents who owned a Weapons manufacturer and a Drug empire. Born as a set of triplets and lived a life of luxury. Then the Functionists came along and it gave him the excuse to be the worse person possible. Just because this entitled prick thought that he deserved Cybertron itself.

Good Job Functionist assholes, you played yourselves. You literally made Unicron's curse a reality.

Spoilers for the most recent chapters of Shattered Alloys!

D16's sire, Terminus, often tries to visit his sparkling but he is constantly kept away from Iacon by Termagax. When he does visit he gifts D16 sketchpads and datapads on literature. Eventually, Terminus gave up, frustrated and angered with Termagax constantly lying to him and could only hope that he would be able to find D16 again when he was old enough.

Kilotronyx and Maccadam have been close friends for many cycles, Maccadam being one of the few people who know Kilotronyx's dark past. There is a rumour that Kilo and Maccadam were more than friends as Kilotronyx liked to spent all her time there before she adopted Soundwave.

Codexa Pax met D16 very briefly while visiting Termagax and offered to bring her own sparkling over after seeing how lonely the poor kid was. Termagax denied her from doing so, no matter how many times Codexa urged her to think of his welfare.

Scion Fornax once saw D16 when he managed to sneak out of the apartment once. When he attempted to tell Kilotronyx, she was hurt, not believing him and upset that Scion would lie about something so personal to her.

Orion Pax, after being told that Termagax had a sparkling that had no friends would sneak out and leave D16 datapads and gifts on his window sill with silly little messages. D16 never found out who was leaving them.

Scion wanted to become a doctor after meeting First Aid when he helped reattach Starscream's wing after an 'incident'.

Kilotronyx suspected that Termagax was a D-Class but never confronted her on it, realising that probably wanted no part with the Class's history. It still hurt Kilotronyx deeply, but she respected her decision.

Soundwave likes Starscream and grew very attached to him after Starscream designed a new vocaliser for him as his current one caused him pain when ever he spoke.

Orion Pax likes to sneak into Alpha Trion's lectures.

Lord Requiem/Kilotronyx regard Cyclonus as a sire-figure and the only friend they had had for most of their life. It as one of Lord Requiem's conditions that Cyclonus be pardoned when he swore fealty to Megatronus Prime.
