I knew it was too much to hope for but I so desperately wanted a good WAOYF mv.

I wanted louis waking up all tired and scratching his head, while the intro of the song is playing all muffled in the background.

I wanted him to go into the kitchen for his tea and I wanted to hear that damn fridge opening.

I wanted to hear keyboard sounds and I wanted louis to say "hey, babe" to whoever was making that sound and I wanted to hear no reply. I wanted louis to look confused and then ask that person "good morning, love. coffee?" and I wanted to hear a sigh and then the person just ups and leaves and louis looks confused and frustrated.

I wanted the song to start playing normally now and I. wanted. to. see louis following that person into the walk in closet (pun not intended, sorry) and I wanted to hear that person leave and Louis look more frustrated all the while singing and then I wanted to see the washroom door close and then I wanted to see louis sigh and leave the room and bring coffee for the person and sit and drink his own tea, tired. and then the person leave the room and leaves the house for work and louis goes to work and his own studio (and maybe he's working on this very song and we hear it acapella then) and the he's texting that number saved as "babe" of course and then the messages are marked as read and still there's no reply.

at the end of the day, I wanted to see louis lay down in bed and I wanted to the blankets move as the person settles themself in front of him and I wanted to see louis smile and I wanted to see his mouth move as the video goes silent and i wanted to see a note on the fridge like "Louis, food is in the kitchen, its your favourite xx" or something and then I wanted to see that the person has replied to louis saying something like "sorry, was busy with work, couldn't reply, coming home now" so that it's abundantly clear they love each other very much and it's not "trouble in paradise" but just something everyone in a relationship goes through, just a squabble.

So on yet another road trip I did a dastardly deed and made a playlist of all Harry, Louis, and Niall’s solo stuff. And as I listened on shuffle, I just couldn’t escape the feeling that one of these things was not like the other. Niall’s songs more oft than not are about love—the temptress, desire, being left, the kind of embryonic beginnings and swift endings of someone who actually dates people. But Harry and Louis? You know that saying “history never repeats itself, but it rhymes”? That’s what they do. Album after album, era to era, I could trace a path through greif, miscommunication, petty fights, coffee, stars, too much thinking and too much drinking, annoyance, adoration. There’s a depth that belies an understanding. And going forward in time, songs that tackled other loves, moved to explore friendship (Matilda, That’s the Way Love Goes) and beauty and home and belonging (Common People, TPWK). There’s even the constant reference to smoking.

It’s not so much that I think they’re perfect people with a flawless happily ever after. But they’re bound still, in their songs, in their lyrics, rhyming in ways only visible from a distance, from a collective glance at how these threads weave a tapestry of growing up and getting wiser and healing. I’ve been willing to be disproved of their connection for a while now, and always the stunts are yearly and the articles too predictable, and I come back to listening to them in the only place they have control, and despite the added “girl who looked like you” or “went to your uni” or the pretense that Harry’s albums each have a distinct muse, this rhyming brings me back here. To boys who touched secretly behind tables. Who kissed while potato cameras watched. Who held hands miserably with girl after girl only to press their knees together on interview couches.

It all comes back to this every single time. They are steeped together—intermingled, crushed essence irretrievably bound in boiling waters—and it’s so obvious if you only listen.
