How to Make Your Own Impulse Response
I’ve been walking around Oslo, capturing the sound of spaces to use them as effects in Space Designer in Logic pro X.
It is actually very simple to do, all you need is a balloon, a needle (to pop the balloon), something to record with, and a space you want to record!
Ideally, the microphone you would use would have a flat frequency response to be able to pick up the entire frequency range. A good mic I’ve used in the past is the Beyerdynamic MM1, but as I don’t have access to it in these times, I used the one I have, which is a Shure SM57. It won’t pick up the entire frequency range but it’s a good mic and will produce decent sound.
Now, go into the space of your choosing and record the popping of the balloon! It’s important to be quiet in the time it takes for the space to “react” to the pop, as that is actually what we’re recording.
Remove the actual pop from your recording and you have your impulse response! Load it in Space Designer by clicking “Load IR”, and hear how it sounds!
What I love about this is that there are literally no limits to what you can use as an impulse response. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a reverb effect, you can use it to shape the sound how you want it. In the past I’ve used the pluck of a string to make a MIDI harp sound slightly more realistic, or breaking of glass to make a typewriter more metallic.
