It comes with two mods, the first unlocks everything and the other is unlimited money, basically 'sandbox mode.' There is many more in development and many more out there. When talking about city-builders, Cities: Skylines is easily the first one that comes to mind.

With critics pretty muchunanimouslyagreeing, it’s simply the best in the genre right now.

With the initial goal of being able to simulate a city with a million unique citizens, Colossal Order has succeeded in creating a game unmatched in scale. With that much at your disposal, it’s hard not to let your creativity flow building and managing your own city.

And the devs even went a step further by allowing modding compatibility. As you’d expect, the community has been hard at work and has churned out mods in the hundreds of thousands – basically making anything possible with Cities: Skylines.

So where do you even get started? Well I’ve already searched through what’s out there to give you my list of what I think are the 50 best ones. Have a look for yourself, I’m sure you’ll find something you like.

50. Loading Screen Mod

Before even getting started with pragmatic mods, you’re going to want to install this one.

A simple utility that helps you manage the mods you have, as well as all the required assets for your game to run smoothly.

This also displays some useful information while your city is loading, like how much memory is being used, which assets are being loaded, and which assets are missing(if any).

That alone makes it an essential mod for managing all the other mods you’re going to use. But it also speeds up loading time by integrating its own asset loader, so it’s really just fantastic.

49. Ultimate Eyecandy v1.5.2

This probably isn’t what you think it is, based on the name.

Cities: Skylines already looks pretty good on its own. So we’re not looking for something to improve on the game’s graphics.

Ultimate Eyecandy is actually the most useful tool you can have for capturing your city under your preferred conditions.

Maybe you’ve just started building your first city and would like to share your progress. Well this is sure to come in handy.

Allowing you to change time of day, the sun’s latitude and longitude, ambient light intensity, weather, and even change LUT’s in-game. Ultimate Eyecandy basically allows you to capture what your city looks like however you want.

If you prefer to become Seattle where it rains in your city forever, that’s possible too. All up to you.

48. Traffic Manager: President Edition

As your city grows, traffic management becomes increasingly difficult.

With intertwining roads, 8-way intersections, pedestrians complicating traffic flow, and the game’s problematic AI, it can become one of the bigger problems you end up focusing on.

Most players find that it can be distracting though. We would rather spend all that time improving on our city rather than solving traffic jams!

Well Traffic Manager helps with that, giving you complete control over road traffic in your city.

There are tons of options here, including the ability to change road restrictions for specific vehicles, set speed limits, and select lane prioritizations.

Many players consider the base game to be unplayable without this, but try it out and see for yourself.

47. Precision Engineering

Probably all city builder fans tend to have a bit of OCD kick in every now and again. We always want things to line up right, and oftentimes find ourselves disheartened when we can’t get certain things the way we want.

Precision Engineering helps with that. It aims to improve on the game’s building mechanic for roads, train lines, pipes, and power lines.

New features have been added to help you get things set exactly how you imagine. And you’ll find angle and distance measurements, snapping, and guidelines to help you along.

46. Move It!

One more mod to help with your customization needs: Move It!

This gives you more control over moving and aligning objects in the game.

With a few simple keybinds you can easily move buildings and trees, among other things. You even have the option to select multiple items at once and move everything at the same time.

Some additional options include the ability to move items in low-res mode, as we all know how graphically intensive it can get once your city is packed with detail.

You can even fine-tune placement and angle rotation so you can get everything exactly where and how you want them.

45. Building Anarchy

To further control building placement, you’re going to want to have Building Anarchy installed.

It’s pretty common in city-builders to have a predetermined set of requirements to be able to place buildings.

Some buildings need to be placed near roads, or are meant to be placed by bodies of water.

Building Anarchy gives you complete control of placement modes, by allowing you to change requirements for any building.

Want a football stadium in the middle of a lake? Sure, why not.

44. Find It!

Another thing to watch out for is actually finding things around town. In a huge city packed with people, buildings, vehicles, and even decorations… it can get difficult to find certain things fast.

Luckily, we have Find It!

A simple mod that improves the search features of the game, allowing for added functionality.

The mod starts out by scanning all assets present in your city and assigning them tags based on title, description, and other important details. It then creates a database of all existing assets to make things easier to track. Useful, right?

43. Watch It!

One more great quality of life mod here, Watch It! gives you the ability to see vital statistics with a quick click of the mouse.

It gives you a taskbar of sorts from where you can access quick overviews of water, electricity, education, and garbage, among other important management statistics.

Not only does it open up a menu showing the information, but it even gives you a color-coded visual representation of how things are for each statistic. Ted from accounting would love this.

And really, this mod is very easy to use once you install it.

It’ll sure come in handy for quick macro glances at how your city is doing.

42. Bulldoze It!

Across the lifespan of your city you’re bound to encounter natural disasters. When that happens, anything goes.

And if buildings get damaged they might become too dated and end up being abandoned.

This can be a hassle because for one, they can no longer be used, yet still take up space.

Other than that… well, they just don’t add to the overall look of your city. With Bulldoze It! you can have destroyed or abandoned buildings automatically removed from your city.

The mod even comes with customizable options where you can set which buildings are removed, how frequently, and to have historical buildings preserved.

Automation for the win.

41. Extended Public Transport UI

Wherever you are in the world, public transportation surely plays a major role in your city.

Cities: Skylines is no different, as public transportation is a major service that your city must provide for your citizens to get around.

With a simplified layout, you can much more easily manage bus and train routes within your city. You have options to single out specific routes, and have passenger and vehicle information for each with a quick click.

40. Extra Landscaping Tools

If you’re looking for more ways to customize the look and feel of your cities, the Extra Landscaping Tools mod is a must-have.

With this mod you get tools for modifying natural resources, water, terrain, and trees.

Brush tools now have size and strength options too, allowing you to set the area size affected as well as how much it’ll be affected.

This is a huge help for getting things done quicker, as well as to customize terrain down to the detail.

Another great feature this adds is the ability to undo actions.

You can’t avoid unintentionally clicking somewhere every now and then. There should be a quick undo button to fix this, but surprisingly the base game does not give you that option.

39. Surface Painter

You can get even more out of the Extra Landscaping Tools mod with the Surface Painter plugin.

It gives you more control over landscaping by adding a painter. It’s very simple to use and lets you paint over land to make pavement, gravel, fields, or ruining.

The painter can also be used with all the available brushes and options in Extra Landscaping Tools as well, so you’ll be able to customize your land down to the detail.

38. Daylight Classic

Probably the only graphics mod on the list, Daylight Classic doesn’t do much – but I feel that it makes the overall look of the game much easier on the eyes.

Anyone else annoyed by the warm yellow-tinted sunlight of the base game?

It almost looks like it’s always sunset time.

This mod simply removes the yellow tint from sunlight, giving the game an overall cooler look. Not only does it look much more realistic, but it’s also less bothersome.

37. Fine Road Anarchy

With building and landscape customization, let’s not forget about roads.

Roads obviously play a huge role in your city’s development, as people wouldn’t be able to get anywhere without them.

The Fine Road Anarchy tool is a must-have that makes building roads so much easier.

You might encounter restrictions when connecting roads, but these can be bypassed with the Fine Road Anarchy settings.

Connect roads that weren’t allowed previously, as well as toggle settings for bending, snapping, and collisions, to place your roads virtually anywhere you want.

36. More Beautification

Here’s something for those who really want to get their creative juices flowing.

The More Beautification mode gives settings to basically decorate your city however you want. It allows you to place little objects that would otherwise not be available in the base game.

Props are little decorative items that would usually come with buildings, including hedges, benches, and lights.

For those who like to focus on the little details, this should be your first install.

35. 81 Tiles

As if the game wasn’t big enough already, eventually someone wanted to make it even bigger.

Who knows why the devs decided that only 25 tiles should be made available for players, when there are actually 81 tiles in the game?

Leave it to gamers to want to unlock everything. Because with this simple mod, you now have access to all 81 tiles.

Expand your cities to more than thrice the original size, with options to unlock each tile one-by-one or all at once.

34. First-Person Camera

A fun little mod that unlocks the camera from the typical birds-eye view.

This allows you to take a first-person perspective and experience your city as your citizens do.

You can even get in a car and drive around, whatever you do is up to you.

After all, your city is only as fun as you make it.

33. Ploppable RICO Revisited

Ploppable RICO is another mod that most consider to be essential for any Cities: Skyline player.

For those who aren’t familiar, RICO stands for residential, industrial, commercial, and office.

The mod gives you more control over how you design your city, as you’ll now be able to plop any of the buildings above. You can also convert any ploppable building to be used as you intend: for example, any ploppable unique building can be made into office space.

It also allows you to place buildings that are larger than 4×4, so you can place towering condominium buildings that are actually functional.

32. Roundabout Builder

Yet another mod that makes building roads much easier.

Roundabout Builder does exactly as it says: automatically places a roundabout wherever you want with a single click.

All you have to do is set the radius, point your curser, and click – and there you go!

31. Remove Sickness

Sickness can be a massive problem is Cities: Skylines, and bad ones can cause citizens to die in waves.

Any self-respecting city official wouldn’t want that. So here’s a quick fix.

It’s designed to do one thing, and nothing else. It removes all current sickness from your game. Do note that it doesn’t prevent sickness from returning, but it will wipe the slate clean.

It’s a cheaty solution, but a quick one. If you’re looking for a more realistic solution check the next mod on my list.

30. Lifecycle Rebalance

When your city’s population reaches the hundreds of thousands, death waves can wipe them out in a snap.

Death waves are actually caused by an unrealistic mechanic where citizens that move into your city are all within the same age range. This means that they all live a similar amount of time, and towards the end of their lives they start getting sick and eventually passing on.

This mod fixes that by creating variations in age when citizens move into your city.

Not only does this fix the death wave issue, it adds a whole new sense of realism to the game as well.

29. Real Time

Time is a strange thing in Cities: Skylines.

Actually, more like it’s not a thing at all.

Every city seems to be the city the never sleeps. Everything is literally moving no matter the time. Stores stay open, citizens are working, people are out and about even late at night.

That doesn’t sound too realistic, does it? Well the Real Time mod fixes exactly that.

Making the game run at real time, citizens actually sleep at night, wake up in the morning, head to work, and go back to bed.

Work shifts make it possible for citizens to work different hours based on their jobs too, adding variety and realism as well.

28. Ambient Sounds Tuner

Some players found that the sounds of the game could use some improvement.

With the Ambient Sounds Tuner, most sounds in the game have been replaced with more realistic sounds.

Many of the annoying sound effects have been removed as well, to make for a more immersive overall experience.

Ambient Sounds Tuner even allows you to download custom sound packs, or even create your own – making the soundscapes of your city completely customizable.

27. Building Themes

Another great customization tool, this time changing the look of buildings.

On a district level, Building Themes allows you to apply different themes that affect how buildings appear.

Simple enough, right? It adds a “Themes” tab to the district policies menu, from which you can set themes that’ll be applied to each district.

It also allows you to download custom themes if you’d like, but it comes with two default settings – European and International.

26. Network Skins

If it isn’t obvious yet, Cities: Skylines players like to have control of every little thing.

Yes, we can now even choose to detail our city streets.

With Network Skins you can choose street lights, roadside trees, and bridge pillars, depending on what look you want your city to have.

You’d be surprised at how much more realistic the game looks when roadside trees actually have variety, instead of having rows of the same shrubbery.

25. Prop & Tree Anarchy

Speaking of trees, the Prop & Tree Anarchy mod gives you control of trees and props as well.

Trees can be placed on roads, within buildings, or even underwater now.

It’s completely up to you. If you wanted a house with a tree inside, go for it.

The mod not only works with trees, but with props as well, so this one is great with the More Beautification mod.

24. Unlimited Trees

Can’t have enough trees? You’re going to need Unlimited Trees to go with that.

Yes we’re doing a lot of tree mods here, just roll with me.

Unlimited Trees removes the game’s limit of 262,144 to allow you to place up to 2 million.

Build a forest just outside the city. Or combine this with Prop & Tree Anarchy to build a forest inside the city. Now we’re cookin’ on all burners!

23. Chirpy Exterminator

I can’t deny that Chirpy can actually be useful from time to time.

For most players, however, the constant popups become annoying pretty quickly.

Lucky for us, we won’t have to worry about being bothered by Chirpy ever again.

The Chirpy exterminator mod simply disables the tweeting bird so you can go about your business freely.

As you probably noticed by now, most of these mods unlock previously unavailable features. No one gets to tell us what to do in Cities: Skylines. Not even Chirpy.

22. Wayne Enterprises

Now that you have the power of expanding across the entire map, and you’re able to modify every little detail within your city, let’s take a look at some cool things you can add to bring your city to life.

One word: Batman.

There are tons of building mods for Cities: Skylines that can bring color to any city. Whether you’re looking to add some restaurants, parks, sporting arenas, or pretty much anything else you can think of.

One of my personal favorites is the Wayne Enterprises building by Auldben.

Does this even need an explanation? It’s like a little video game easter egg you can place in your city. How fun!

21. Ghostbusters Firestation

Is there something strange in your neighborhood?

Well if you already have the caped crusader keeping the city safe from the villains, who’s going to take care of the ghosts?

With this mod you can build the Ghostbusters fire station in your city!

Another cool little feature – and it’s not even just a cosmetic item. It actually serves its purpose as a fire station, though it has reduced stats compared to small fire stations in the base game, as it’s even smaller at 1×3.

20. Space Needle

The iconic observation tower and city icon for Seattle, the Space Needle.

It’s always a consideration if we’re talking about beautiful skylines.

Well if that’s what you’re after, look no further. You can have your very own Space Needle for just $115,000 dollars. Well, at least the mod’s free.

Not only does it look great in the center of any city, it adds tourism benefits as well.

19. Gula’s In-and-Out Burger

One of the more well-known building creators for Cities: Skylines is Gula, who has a whole list of interesting mods you can check out.

I’ve already gone through his workshop and picked out my personal favorites, starting with Gula’s In-and-Out Burger.

Now this might be a controversial topic depending on where you live… but who doesn’t want THE best burgers in town?

This 3×3 recreation of the famous burger chain even comes in the signature red and white colorway, complete with the yellow arrow logo and everything.

18. Gula’s Starbucks Coffee

Coming in with more from Gula’s list is his Starbucks Coffee mod.

Another branding icon coming out of Seattle, Starbucks is one of the most recognized coffee chains in the world.

This 2×4 growable can be placed in commercial zones so your citizens can get their coffee fix anytime they want.

17. Gula’s Gibson Guitar Factory

One more from Gula? OK, how about the Gibson Guitar Factory.

Taking ideas from Memphis this time around, this is a great building to have if you’re looking to add a little bit of rock history to your city.

The large 6×8 landmark building pays homage to the actual building in Memphis, complete with the signature Gibson logo up top.

The amount of detail in this is just crazy. Rock & metal fans, grab this add-on for sure.

It’s also cool that this mod was actually the result of a community monthly raffle from Gula’s Patreon supporters.

16. McDonalds

Wherever you are in the world, there’s bound to be a McDonalds somewhere close by.

And in that sense, this mod adds a sense of realism to the game. As McDonalds branches are just common no matter what city you’re in.

Your city should be no different, so go build some McDonalds branches!

What’s great about this one is that it’s also RICO compatible, so you’ll be able to place them anywhere you want.

15. Sunken Plaza

Now that we’ve added some restaurants, coffee shops, and even some landmarks, how about we add some nice places where your citizens can just walk around, relax, and enjoy being outside?

There are tons of cosmetic structures like parks that help your city look alive.

One of my personal favorites is this Sunken Plaza mod by ryanjamesoflondon.

A great-looking modern plaza where your citizens can walk around and enjoy in the city. It’s a great visual addition to any city too, especially when the lights turn on at night.

14. Modern Art Plaza

If you’re looking for a more modern look, the Modern Art Plaza might work for you.

It’s a bit bigger than the Sunken Plaza at 6×6, but has a more modern & open feel to it.

I imagine this would be great for adding open spaces to your city, especially if surrounded by towering high-rise buildings.

Add a bit of variety and flavor to your city, with an artistic taste to boot. It can be built for $5,500 and has tourism benefits as well.

13. Old Town Commercial Set

Those of you looking to add some variation to residential buildings, this is a great place to start.

The Old Town Commercial set gives access to 7 new level 1 commercial assets with an old-fashioned aesthetic.

The design is actually inspired by buildings in Poland. But reminiscent of the famous Painted Ladies in San Francisco, you can have your very own 17th-18th century style apartments in your city.

The buildings even have color maps so can customize how they look.

12. Modern Townhouse

As always, there are always some modern alternatives – this mod being one of my favorites.

The Modern Townhouse by cbudd was inspired by a modern apartment in Germany.

The building is small with a 2×3 footprint, but has three floors. How much more modern can it get? The second and third floors even have little balconies.

There is so much detail here that it’s obvious the modder put a lot of work into it. And it paid off – because the result is amazing.

11. Cul De Sac

A great addition to any suburban area is a cul-de-sac.

Even I am reminded of some great childhood memories when I see a cul-de-sac. And for some reason it gives my smaller residential areas a more “homey” look.

This simple mod lets you to place a cul-de-sac in four different sizes, so you can place them as you like, to remind you of those childhood memories. Or maybe to remind you of those three weird Ed boys.

10. Graffiti & Streetart Megapack

For urban areas, on the other hand, street art can make any city feel alive.

If you’re looking for a change of scenery from the vanilla clean look in Cities: Skylines, the Graffiti & Streetart Megapack could give you something to enjoy.

There’s a total of 111 graffiti and street art images to choose from. Everything from tags, elaborate paintings, and even cartoon robots.

A great way to make your city look and feel more “lived in” is to scatter these across building walls and street corners.

9. Street Market Props

Since the modding community is made up of gamers, it’s unavoidable that some of their mods will have nods to their other favorite video games.

You might recognize the look of The Street Market Props mod if you’ve played Bioshock Infinite before.

That’s right, the French street kiosks from the game were ported over. And they can now be placed in your very own city.

Not only that, but the modder went so far as to create his own props – giving us a total of 100 to choose from!

The pack is actually divided into 17 different mods, so you can pick and choose which ones you want.

Choices include Asian, book, cheese, flower, and seafood carts, among others.

You can even customize down to the detail of awnings and market workers, giving you complete control. Just the way you like it.

8. The Amazing Spiderman

If the Wayne Enterprises building wasn’t enough to fill your superhero needs, well then this one’s for you.

Previously taking from DC, we now have a Marvel favorite.

You read it right. You can actually have The Amazing Spiderman as part of your city.

Best Graphics Mods For Cities Skylines

Now don’t expect too much, as this is just a citizen skin. You won’t be seeing him swinging around the city or anything.

Nevertheless, it’s a cool feature to be able to see Spiderman walking around your sidewalks every so often. I’m not sure why anyone could say no to this.

7. Bordered Skylines

Borderlands has become known for its unique cartoon-y art style.

A Borderlands game is just instantly recognizable for gamers, with the defined outlines and comic book textures… it’s a classic by now.

Well if you’re a fan, you can take Cities: Skylines in that direction too.

This tool adds an “Edge Detection” feature that gives your game that Borderlands look.

You can even mix and match different graphical mods to completely change the game’s appearance.

6. Los Santos from GTA V

Another great way to enhance your Cities: Skylines experience is by trying out different maps.

There are so many to choose from, with most of them worked on for hours to give a completely unique city-building experience.

So covering maps with the theme of video game-inspired mods, we have Los Santos from GTA V.

GTA changed the game with its lifelike worlds, basically ever since the release of San Andreas.

There are tons of mods that recreate GTA maps for many different games, and Cities: Skylines is no different. Not to mention the number of GTA 5 map mods created for the game itself!

Modder grockefeller took it upon himself to build a completely accurate recreation of South San Andreas, including the cities of Los Santos, Paleto, and Sandy Shores.

This map is just gorgeous, capturing the mountain roads and coastline from GTA V. This will surely be fun to play around with, whether you’re a GTA fan or not.

5. Skyrim

While on the topic of great video game worlds, Skyrim is always near the top of the list.

This is one of the earlier open worlds that caught people’s attention as it felt so alive, almost as though it would continue living on even when you closed the game.

Well now you can play Skyrim in Cities: Skylines thanks to modder RoboAsimov.

Keep in mind though, that the goal of this mod was not to actually represent Skyrim 100%. Certain changes had to be made for a good Cities experience, so some landscaping was done to make room for city-building.

Enter Evernote Essentials. Evernote Essentials is the unofficial manual for Evernote with the vast majority of the application’s functions documented in the tome. The author, Brett Kelly, does a great job of keeping the book updated as new features are added to Evernote. And Kelly, who is also an Evernote employee, admits to being an “Evernote Nerd.”

Kelly explores Evernote in a casual, conversational tone, that is easy to follow and to understand. Some of his commentary can be a little over-the-top, but he is still successful at driving the point home.

A Look at Evernote Essentials

The book begins by taking a detailed look at the notes structure of Evernote and how the views can differ slightly between the Windows and Apple operating systems. He discusses the various types of notes and delves into formatting and more advanced options.

One of the great things about Evernote Essentials is that Kelly offers his own personal tips and tricks for getting more out of the software. For instance, he demonstrates his note tagging strategy of “Starting Generally, and Ending Specifically.” Remote play ps4 local network.

The book progresses into a discussions about notebooks, syncing, and doing a high level search. It also goes deeper into the differences with the app as it appears on the Windows and Apple operating systems as well as the differences between the two versions. Yes, it is the same program, but there are some subtle differences in appearance and behavior on the different platforms.

Once Kelly has completed his overview of the two app versions, he goes into a deeper discussion about Evernote power-user strategies, including advanced searching and tagging techniques. While some of the terms that he uses sound technical, the author does a great job of making them easy to understand.

What I particularly like about Evernote Essentials is the detail given to the search capabilities of the app. That’s where the power of Evernote lies, in its search functions.

Kelly explains search operators:

Evernote search operators share common form and logic. If you want to find all of the notes that have a certain attribute, you’d search with “operator:”. For all notes that don’t have that attribute, prepend your statement with a minus: “-operator:”. Pretty simple, right? Let’s take a look at each of the available operators.

Pretty straightforward. Here’s an operator usage example he provides:

tag — Obviously, this operator lets you filter notes that have (or don’t have) a specific tag. For example:

Omnifocus youtube. tag:waffles

This will match all of the notes in the active notebook (or all notebooks, if that’s selected) that are tagged with “waffles.”

The book briefly discusses some of the other built-in functions of Evernote including note and notebook sharing, GPS, and how it interfaces with other Evernote apps (Evernote Hello, Evernote Food, Penultimate, and Skitch). Kelly also talks about the Evernote Trunk for finding other apps and utilities that work in tandem with Evernote.

Evernote Essentials also provides a lot of suggested uses for Evernote including a couple of full “Use Cases.” I also have a modest list of Evernote uses you can peruse at your leisure.

Final Thoughts

As I mentioned above, Evernote is a really robust program with lots of features and functions. Evernote Essentials is a fantastic book for quickly learning how to use the program.

I appreciate that Kelly doesn’t get too technical in the discussion and is very casual in his presentation. If you want to learn the basics and then move on to more advanced techniques, Evernote Essentials is going to be an awesome resource for you to add to your library.

Git is now the default version control experience in Visual Studio 2019. Since version 16.6, we've worked on building out the feature set and iterating on it based on your feedback. The new Git experience is turned on by default for everyone with the release of version 16.8.

How to use Git in Visual Studio

We'll walk you through how to use the new Git experience in Visual Studio 2019, but if you'd like to take a quick tour first, check out the following video: Video length: 5.27 minutes

There are three ways to start using Git with Visual Studio to be more productive:

Open an existing Git repository. If your code is already on your machine, you can open it by using File > Open > Project/Solution (or Folder) and Visual Studio automatically detects if it has an initialized Git repository.

Create a new Git repository. If your code is not associated with Git, you can create a new Git repository.

Clone an existing Git repository. If the code that you would like to work on is not on your machine, you can clone any existing remote repositories.

Note

Starting also with version 16.8, Visual Studio 2019 includes a fully integrated GitHub account experience. You can now add both GitHub and GitHub Enterprise accounts to your keychain. You’ll be able to add and leverage them just as you do with Microsoft accounts, which means that you’ll have an easier time accessing your GitHub resources across Visual Studio. For more information, see the Work with GitHub accounts in Visual Studio page.

Create a new Git repository

If your code is not associated with Git, you can start by creating a new Git repository. To do so, select Git > Create Git Repository from the menu bar. Then, in the Create a Git repository dialog box, enter your information.

The Create a Git repository dialog box makes it easy to push your new repository to GitHub. By default, your new repository is private, which means that you are the only one who can access it. If you uncheck the box, your repository will be public, which means that anyone on GitHub can view it.

Tip

Whether your repository is public or private, it's best to have a remote backup of your code stored securely on GitHub even if you are not working with a team. This also makes your code available to you no matter what computer you're using.

You can choose to create a local-only Git repository by using the Local only option. Or, you can link your local project with an existing empty remote repository on Azure DevOps or any other Git provider by using the Existing Remote option.

Clone an existing Git repository

Visual Studio includes a straightforward clone experience. If you know the URL of the repository that you would like to clone, you can paste the URL in the Repository location section and then choose the disk location you would like Visual Studio to clone to.

If you don’t know the repository URL, Visual Studio makes it easy to browse to and then clone your existing GitHub or Azure DevOps repository.

Open an existing local repository

After you’ve cloned a repository or created one, Visual Studio detects the Git repository and adds it to your list of Local Repositories in the Git menu. From here, you can quickly access and switch between your Git repositories.

View files in Solution Explorer

When you clone a repository or open a local repository, Visual Studio switches you into that Git context by saving and closing any previously open solutions and projects. Solution Explorer loads the folder at the root of the Git repository and scans the directory tree for any View files. These include files such as CMakeLists.txt or those with the .sln file extension.

Visual Studio adjusts its View based on which View file you load in Solution Explorer:

If you clone a repository that contains a single .sln file, then Solution Explorer directly loads that solution for you.

If Solution Explorer doesn’t detect any .sln files in your repository, then by default it loads Folder View.

If your repository has more than one .sln file, then Solution Explorer shows you the list of available Views for you to choose from.

You can toggle between the currently open View and the list of Views by using the Switch Views button in the Solution Explorer toolbar.

Git Changes window

Git tracks file changes in your repo as you work, and separates the files in your repo into three categories. These changes are equivalent to what you would see when you enter the git status command in the command line:

Unmodified files: These files haven't changed since your last commit.

Modified files: These files have changes since your last commit, but you haven't yet staged them for the next commit.

Staged files: These files have changes that will be added to the next commit.

As you do your work, Visual Studio keeps track of the file changes to your project in the Changes section of the Git Changes window.

When you are ready to stage changes, click the + (plus) button on each file you want to stage, or right-click a file and then select Stage. You can also stage all your modified files with one click by using the stage all + (plus) button at the top of the Changes section.

When you stage a change, Visual Studio creates a Staged Changes section. Only changes in the Staged Changes section are added to the next commit, which you can do by selecting Commit Staged. The equivalent command for this action is git commit -m 'Your commit message'. Changes can also be unstaged by clicking the – (minus) button. The equivalent command for this action is git reset <file_path> to unstage a single file or git reset <directory_path> to unstage all the files in a directory.

You can also choose not to stage your modified files by skipping the staging area. In this case, Visual Studio allows you to commit your changes directly without having to stage them. Just enter your commit message and then select Commit All. The equivalent command for this action is git commit -a.

Visual Studio also makes it easy to commit and sync with one click by using the Commit All and Push and Commit All and Sync shortcuts. When you double-click any file in the Changes and the Staged changes sections, you can see a line-by-line comparison with the unmodified version of the file.

Tip

You can associate an Azure DevOps work item with a commit by using the '#' character if you are connected to the Azure DevOps repository. You can connect your Azure DevOps repository through Team Explorer > Manage Connections.

Select an existing branch

Visual Studio displays the current branch in the selector at the top of the Git Changes window.

The current branch is also available in the status bar on the bottom-right corner of the Visual Studio IDE.

From both locations, you can switch between existing branches.

Create a new branch

You can also create a new branch. The equivalent command for this action is git checkout -b <branchname>.

Creating a new branch is as simple as entering the branch name and basing it off an existing branch.

You can choose an existing local or remote branch as the base. The Checkout branch checkbox automatically switches you to the newly created branch. The equivalent command for this action is git checkout -b <new-branch><existing-branch>.

Git Repository window

Visual Studio has a new Git Repository window, which is a consolidated view of all the details in your repository, including all of the branches, remotes, and commit histories. You can access this window directly from either Git or View on the menu bar or from the status bar.

Manage branches

When you select Manage Branches from the Git menu, you’ll see the branches tree-view in the Git Repository window. From the left pane, you can use the right-click context menu to checkout branches, create new branches, merge, rebase, cherry-pick, and more. When you click the branch, you can see a preview of its commit history in the right pane.

Incoming and outgoing commits

When you fetch a branch, the Git Changes window has an indicator under the branch drop-down, which displays the number of unpulled commits from the remote branch. This indicator also shows you the number of unpushed local commits.

The indicator also functions as a link to take you to the commit history of that branch in the Git Repository window. The top of the history now displays the details of these incoming and outgoing commits. From here, you can also decide to Pull or Push the commits.

Commit Details

When you double-click a Commit, Visual Studio opens its details in a separate tool window. From here you can revert the commit, reset the commit, amend the commit message, or create a tag on the commit. When you click a changed file in the commit, Visual Studio opens the side-by-side Diff view of the commit and its parent.

Connect Visual Studio To Github

Handle merge conflicts

Conflicts can occur during a merge if two developers modify the same lines in a file and Git doesn’t automatically know which is correct. Git halts the merge and informs you that you are in a conflicted state.

Visual Studio makes it easy to identify and resolve a merge conflict. First, the Git Repository window shows a gold info bar at the top of the window.

The Git Changes window also displays a ‘Merge is in progress with conflicts’ message, with the unmerged files in their separate section below it.

But if you have neither of these windows open, and instead you go to the file that has merge conflicts, you won’t have to search for the following text:

Instead, Visual Studio displays a gold info bar on the top of the page that indicates that the opened file has conflicts. Then, you can click the link to open the Merge Editor.

The Merge Editor

The Merge Editor in Visual Studio is a three-way merge tool that displays the incoming changes, your current changes, and the result of the merge. You can use the tool bar at the top level of the Merge Editor to navigate between conflicts and auto-merged differences in the file.

You can also use the toggles to show/hide differences, show/hide word differences, and customize the layout. There are checkboxes on the top of each side that you can use to take all the changes from one side or the other. But to take individual changes, you can click the checkboxes to the left of the conflicting lines on either side. Finally, when you finish resolving the conflicts, you can select the Accept Merge button in the Merge Editor. You then write a commit message and commit the changes to complete the resolution.

Personalize your Git settings

To personalize and customize your Git settings at a repository level as well as at a global level, go to either Git > Settings on the menu bar, or to Tools > Options > Source Control on the menu bar. Then, choose the options you want.

How to use the full Team Explorer experience in Visual Studio

The new Git experience is the default version control system in Visual Studio 2019 from version 16.8 onwards. However, if you want to turn it off, you can. Go to Tools > Options > Environment > Preview Features and then toggle the New Git user experience checkbox, which will switch you back to Team Explorer for Git.

This article walks you through the steps to get a Visual Studio solution on your PC into an Azure DevOps Git repo you can share with others. If you want to work with a Visual Studio solution hosted in an existing repo, see the Git tutorial.

Why Use Visual Studio

Note

Visual Studio 2019 now includes a new Git tool that provides an improved experience when connecting to a Git repository. When you enable this tool, the Team Explorer tool is effectively disabled when connected to a Git repository. You can acquire the new tool by downloading Visual Studio 2019 version 16.6. To enable and use the new tool, see Git experience in Visual Studio (Preview).

Prerequisites

An organization in Azure DevOps. If you don't have an organization, you can sign up for one for free. Each organization includes free, unlimited private Git repositories.

Create a local Git repo for your project

Create a new local Git repo for your project by selecting on the status bar in the lower right hand corner of Visual Studio.This will create a new repo in the folder the solution is in and commit your code into that repo. You can also right-click your solution in Solution Explorer and choose Add Solution to Source Control.

Once you have a local repo, select items in the status bar to quickly navigate between Git tasks in Team Explorer.

shows the number of unpublished commits in your local branch. Selecting this opens the Synchronization view in Team Explorer.

shows the number of uncommitted file changes. Selecting this opens the Changes view in Team Explorer.

shows the current Git repo. Selecting this opens the Connect view in Team Explorer.

shows your current Git branch. Selecting this displays a branch picker to quickly switch between Git branches or create new branches.

Note

If you don't see any icons such as or , ensure that you have a project open that is part of a Git repo. If your project is brand new or not yet added to a repo, you can add it to one by selecting on the status bar, or by right-clicking your solution in Solution Explorer and choosing Add Solution to Source Control.

Publish your code to Azure Repos

Navigate to the Push view in Team Explorer by choosing the icon in the status bar. You can also select Sync from the Home view in Team Explorer.

In the Push view in Team Explorer, select the Publish Git Repo button under Push to Visual Studio Team Services.

Verify your email and select your account in the Team Services Domain drop-down.

Enter your repository name and select Publish repository.

This creates a new project in your account with the same name as the repository. To create the repo in an existing project, click Advanced next to Repository name and select a project.

Your code is now in a Git repo in Azure Repos. You can view your code on the web by selecting See it on the web .

Commit and push updates

As you write your code, your changes are automatically tracked by Visual Studio.You can commit changes to your local Git repository by selecting the pending changes icon from the status bar.

On the Changes view in Team Explorer, add a message describing your update and commit your changes.

Select the unpublished changes status bar icon (or select Sync from the Home view in Team Explorer). Select Push toupdate your code in Azure DevOps Services/TFS.

Get changes from others

Sync your local repo with changes from your team as they make updates.

From the Synchronization view in Team Explorer, fetch the commits that your team has made.Double-click a commit to view its file changes.

Select Sync to merge the fetched commits into your local repo and then push any unpublished changes to Azure Repos.

The changes from your team are now in your local repo and visible in Visual Studio.

Frequently asked questions

I don't see the Add to Source Control button in the status bar.

The button in the status bar was added in Visual Studio 2017 (it was Publish in Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 and later) and will only appear when you have Git as your source control provider. If your code is already in a Git repo, you won't see the Add to Source Control button in the status bar, but the status of the current branch in your local repo instead.

If you are in a previous version of Visual Studio, create a local Git repo for your project by selecting the Create new Git repository option in the New Project window when you create a new project.

You can create a local Git repo for an existing solution by right-clicking your project in the Solution Explorer and selecting Add Solution to Source Control.

How can I see what changes are in a commit before I pull it into my local branch?

To see what's changed in a commit, go to the Synchronization page in Team Explorer and right-click on the commit. Select View Commit Details.You can then right-click on any file modified by the commit and select Compare with Previous.. to view the changes compared to the previousversion of the file.

How do I associate my commits with work items?

You can include work items in your commits through Related Work Items in the Changes page in Team Explorer.

Work items can be included in commits by adding #ID into the commit message. For example, Fixing bug #23 in the reporting tools would link work item 23to the commit. The work item is linked when the commit is pushed to Azure Repos.

Can I use the Git command prompt with Visual Studio?

Visual Studio's Team Explorer and the Git command line work great together. Changes to your repos made in either tool will be reflected in the other.Make sure to install the latest release of Git for Windows, which has tools to help you connect to your Azure DevOps Services/TFS repos.

While LGBTQ+ media representation has greatly improved over the past few years, one area that is still severely lacking is trans representation, especially non-binary stories. As a young trans person without many adult non-binary role models, hearing from non-binary adults that have made it past their teenage years and are thriving in their communities is incredibly powerful.

Fortunately, a new memoir by a talented writer and illustrator named Maia Kobabe (who uses the pronouns e/em/eir) has shed on being non-binary as a young adult and navigating the gendered world while struggling with one’s own identity. Reading Maia’s memoir helped me to understand myself and my trans identity in a more complete way, and I am so glad that I found eir book. Recently, I got to talk to em about eir creative process, eir exigence for publishing a memoir, and more.

Eli Bundy: Hi Maia! We are so excited to chat with you today. How are you doing, and what’s been on your mind recently?

Maia Kobabe: Big question – it’s been such a weird year. But I think in a lot of ways, it’s affected my personal schedule less than it has other people. I’ve been working full time as an author and cartoonist since mid 2017, so when everyone else was thinking “how do I work from home?” I was already acclimated to emailing all of my clients and working in my pajamas.

Over the summer, I had a family member far away have a health problem and I was faced with a now-familiar dilemma: Do I see my grandma? Do I not see my grandma? The COVID pressure came down on me more at that time for sure.

I’ve also been headed toward top surgery, which has long been a goal of mine, and I finally was able to have top surgery two weeks ago. Having a voluntary medical procedure in the middle of the pandemic felt strange, but my recovery has been pretty smooth for the most part. It was interesting to be on drugs and napping for the middle two weeks of October.

It will be a long time before I can be out in queer community post-top surgery, so it will be a while before having top surgery will really hit me. It’s been a year of long-delayed responses.

Eli: Congrats on that! I love your book, Gender Queer. How does it feel for such a personal story to be out in the world?

Maia: Mostly it just feels good. It was a little scary in the beginning, but over the course of writing shorter works about gender on Tumblr and online, I’ve become really comfortable talking about very intimate stuff with people I don’t know. I’ve become pretty good at being like, “What is your deepest fear? How do you feel about your body? What’s your relationship like with your parents?”

It’s harder for me to have those intimate conversations with people who I am closer with – including my extended family.

I came out as queer in high school, so that was news to no one. I had started coming out as gender non-binary as I was working on the book. Part of the process of coming out to people was allowing them to read early drafts, so publishing it was not a shock.

I think they heard me say “I’m non-binary,” and that’s one thing, but the stakes are higher when they’re reading a 200-page book about me coming out and being non-binary.

First, I sat down to consider, “How do I say this to someone? How do I get this across?” And that’s why I started working on comics. It started with just little pieces I was putting online. I didn’t know I was writing a book. But it was only until about a year after I started putting them online and was getting very positive feedback, that I compiled all of this into a pitch document.

Eli: Before you were an author, you were a librarian, right? What did you learn from working in libraries, and how did those experiences shape you as an author and artist?

Maia: I love libraries so much. Actually, I was never officially a librarian – I don’t have a degree in library science, but I went from volunteering in my library as a high school student to getting a job at my university library for four years, and then they asked me to come back as a desk manager. I spent a full decade in libraries, but it was mostly helping folks with research or pointing people in the right direction.

I love books, I’ve always loved libraries. Being a reader is really important to me. For lots of queer people, it’s important to find representation in media. It’s always been my goal to be a published author, so I felt like hanging out around books was influential.

Librarians have been so supportive of Gender Queer. It’s available in hundreds of libraries now. They’ve emailed me and said that queer students have reached out about the book, and they’re excited to be able to recommended Gender Queer.

Eli: How has your experience as a non-binary artist been so far, and how can we make publishing and the creative world in general more inclusive to trans and non-binary people?

Maia: I feel very lucky and privileged in that my work has always been very welcomed. I’ve sometimes had opportunities specifically offered to me because I was an out queer author. One area that is still lacking is intersectional queer stories – people who are BIPOC and Queer or BIPOC and trans. Many trans and non-binary stories that have been published recently are by white authors, which isn’t bad, but we need more non-white representation in that genre for sure.

Also, a lot of stories have been about people who are between 28 and 35, like me. What about people who have come out as non-binary or trans in their 50s and 60s? I haven’t seen as many of those stories.

There’s also a trend of throwing a non-binary character into an ensemble cast. While I like that as a concept, it often means that it’s a more shallow representation. I’d love to see the non-binary character be more the main character and have the cis friends be the B cast.

Eli: What advice would you give young artists about making our voices heard and sharing our stories?

Kobabe

Maia: Start making work. Whatever you’re called to – whether doodling in your sketchbook, making a digital book. Just make things. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what they are, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what they look like.

For me, I started posting little comics online. And one thing that inspired me was frustration – I was having all of these conversations with people that didn’t convey my total message. When you haven’t articulated your identity fully to yourself, it’s hard to convey that to other people too.

Anyone can sign up for an Instagram or a Twitter account, and there’s a hunger online for stories that are honest and on the vulnerable side. Things are opening up, but there are still so many more niche stories that we need to tell.

I don’t think anyone who has any type of minority identity should be required to divulge things or be more vulnerable than they’re comfortable with. For some people, sharing those pieces is not cathartic. Sometimes it’s just retraumatizing. But if it does feel good to write about them or draw about them or write songs about them, it can be so wonderful and transformative to create work about that. And I promise, if you share that, you will find an audience. People respond to honest, human stories. Offering that kind of work is a gift to the world. It can sometimes feel like you’re doing a service to your community, although hopefully it’s good for the artist as well.

Part of what I love about comics is that it’s a very low-budget hobby. They can be just as good when made from simple materials as from really expensive materials. Saying something – having a very clear message – and working on the timing is very important. Far more important than using a fancy brush set.

Eli: I feel like a lot of folks are good at starting projects but struggle to finish them. How do you sustain your work and keep yourself going to finish the projects you’re working on?

Maia: I am a Taurus, and I have a lot of Earth signs in my chart. So it’s actually easier for me to finish things than start things. I find the first 10% of the project the most intimidating when it’s very amorphous and it doesn’t have any form, when I can’t make a timeline or an outline. I often have to push myself – there’s sometimes that resistance to beginning something. I have to remind myself that it’s OK to not know what it is yet.

There are so many ways to do creative challenges – some people do InkTober or Comics November. There’s NANOWRIMO going on right now, where writers try to finish the first draft of a book in the month of November.

Maybe do a little something every day, and by the end of a month, look back on it and you can see what you’ve done. Is it an album? A poetry collection?

For me, working on comics, the first stage is sometimes the hardest: Coming up with the writing or thumbnailing – a lot of left brain thought. When I switch over to the right brain parts of the project, the coloring and illustration, it’s easier for me.

Sometimes you just have to go for it – pick a subject that you already think about every day. I thought about gender every day of my goddamn life. As I talked to people more, I could collect these little conversations, and that helped the ideas flow more easily.

I had some anxiety because, at 28, I felt I was too young to write a memoir. Before I started writing, I felt like nothing had happened in my life. All I do is read 100 books a year! That’s my life. But then when I started writing, I was able to reflect more. Maybe my life had more internal conflict than external conflict, but that doesn’t mean nothing was happening.

I’ve never had to fight against my environment or have fights with people. I thought maybe there wasn’t enough narrative tension. But now, I think anyone in the entire world has a story in their life that’s worth telling. Not everyone is ready to tell it or wants to tell it, and I respect that, but I think everyone who is inspired to has a story worth telling.

If anyone thinks they’re too young or not qualified or their life is not interesting enough to write a memoir, please don’t think that. If you’re feeling a pull to write it, please do. Humans like reading about other humans. I really like reading memoirs, there are so many ways that people’s lives go and different experiences that they have and different wisdom. All of it is valuable and all of it is needed!

Remote Play is a fairly old feature for PlayStation. It was introduced for the PS3 and would allow you to play games on your PSP. It sucked and since then the feature has been a bit of a background feature that a lot of people don’t even know about.

With the launch of the PS5, a new icon has appeared on the PS4 home screen that allows you to remote play your PS5 from your PS4, pretty awesome! The feature works well for most but the experience is not flawless. For those finding the experience a little laggy, this guide will give you some helpful tips to reduce lag and latency with PS5 remote play on the PS4.

The PS4 should have less trouble connecting to a PS5 compared to a PS5 accepting connections from a PS4.

I know this is the most generic response you can possibly give for fixing problems but with the PS5, in particular, being able to suspend games and multitask better, the system having some extra stuff consuming system resources could also cause some things to get a little backed up. Likewise with the PS4. If you find things normally work well and are suddenly acting up, restarting the systems if possible may be all you need to fix the problem.

What follows is an article Elena and I wrote for VOYA, the Voice of Youth Advocates. It appeared in their August, 2015 print edition. Elena wrote half, and I wrote half, explaining what it was like to write Elena Vanishing and why we wrote it together.

A few days ago, I held the first copy of Elena Vanishing in my hands, the memoir that chronicles my life-or-death struggle with adolescent anorexia nervosa. After all the hard work and worry, Elena Vanishing is finally a real book. My book. My battle. But mine isn't the only name on the cover. My mother's name is there too.

You may be wondering why I would ask my mother to help me tell such a personal story. Here's what happened when I got asked to write the article you're reading now. First, I procrastinated for a few weeks. Then I obsessively cleaned the apartment while 'thinking about what to write.' Finally, I got into a fight with my husband. Not a single word made it onto the screen.

If I'm talking to you face to face about all this, no question is out of bounds. I don't mind standing in front of a crowd and talking about my eating disorder and the sexual abuse I suffered at thirteen. But when it's just the keyboard and a quiet room, then it's just me and my inner critic, the voice inside my head.

You made a mess of your life! it gloats. And how do you know things have gotten better? How different is your life these days—really?

No audience could ever be as cruel as the voice inside my head.

I wanted Elena Vanishing to happen very badly, but nothing could bring me to face that barrage of abuse day after day. So, for years, I asked my mother to help me. She wrote her first four books for me and my sister. Those books were how we communicated back then, and we communicated by writing this book, too.

The reason I wanted to write my memoir was to correct something that bothers me about the eating disorder books I've read, especially those available for teens. Most of them make recovery seem very simple, as if it's just a question of making a decision to get well. That's not fair to YA anorexics. It only adds to the shame, self-hatred, and isolation they feel when they find themselves failing to meet this unrealistic expectation. The vast majority of anorexics will relapse and require multiple hospitalizations over the course of years. One study followed up with hospitalized anorexics ten years later, and only 23% of them had made a full recovery. The rest had relapsed, and 6% of them were dead. (Eckert et al.) I myself work hard every day to stay on the path toward healing, and I wanted to represent this very difficult but more realistic process in a book for teens.

Since I couldn't face the writing, my mother interviewed me and wrote the text. We lived together during the years we worked on this book, so she was able to ask me questions as events occurred. I answered thousands of questions. Maybe even more than that. We joke that this book was our family therapy, but it really was. We were both committed to telling the complete truth, and that helped me to break down the walls of lies I had built around my disorder to protect myself from shame. It was hard and hurtful to have to revisit past events and be honest about them, but in the end, it was very liberating. Only once the walls come down can an anorexic begin to heal.

The hardest part of this collaboration was sharing painful events and seeing my mother react to that pain. That was why I had hidden those events in the first place. When I had to tell my parents about the rape for the first time, it was almost like being raped again. Things like that came up daily during the writing process and had to be explored again and again.

Revising the manuscript was even harder than writing it. That really surprised me. Each time I had to go back and reread it, I had to get myself pumped up first to face the torrent of horrible memories. But I thought of another young person like me finding this book and gaining strength from it, and that pushed me through. And now, everywhere I go, other survivors come up to share their stories and their strength with me. They've never left me to be the only one in the room to stand up and say I suffered sexual abuse and anorexia. That warmth, and I'll say it, that love, have made this journey worthwhile.

'Ask me anything.' That's what Elena said when I offered to help her write her memoir. The fearlessness of those words, after all she had been through, still brings tears to my eyes.

At the time, I was living with Elena in a furnished room so she could go to full-day treatment for her anorexia. She had been in fulltime or full-day treatment for months, but she wasn't getting better, and our relationship had never been worse. I felt that I didn't know my daughter anymore, and I realized that my lack of understanding was just one more burden weighing her down. So I decided to help Elena write her memoir as a way to try to understand her.

At the time, I was already a veteran YA novelist. Another novelist once described me as an organic writer because I don't deliberately determine before writing a story what my characters are going to be like. Instead, I watch them in a process similar to a guided waking dream. I observe a character very attentively, asking myself why that character would do this trivial action or exhibit that habit of speech. As I watch, I'm constantly comparing what I'm seeing to the other actions or conversations I've seen, and I check those against what I know of that character's background and upbringing. What I'm looking for are patterns: clues to that character's hidden motivations.

It was this process that I brought to my interactions with Elena as soon as I agreed to work on her memoir. I interviewed her incessantly over months and then years as we worked on Elena Vanishing, and while I interviewed her, I studied her for the same sorts of clues my characters give that reveal their inner motivations. I would listen to how she said something, not just what she said. I'd watch what she was doing with her hands and how her posture changed. Then these things would tell me what I still didn't understand about her and guide where I would take the interview next.

The thing that fascinated and frustrated me as a writer was that it was the little things—often tiny things—that revealed Elena's illness most clearly. That's why I decided to compress the memoir timeline and organize each stage of her illness into one or two sample days: this allowed me to pull together those seemingly trivial moments in a way that didn't bog down the pacing of the book. I had them all written out on notecards, and I sat on the floor and shuffled those cards and organized them into piles, then outlined each chapter. But lots of events in the book really did happen exactly as described, all in one day or in one evening, such as the Halloween party evening when Elena almost got raped again.

It was hard for Elena to face reading these chapters, so sometimes, I would read them to her, and this would start up new conversations as she interrupted me to comment on or expand upon what I'd written. On days like that, the questions flew both ways as we talked, and it was during one of those two-way interviews that Elena asked me, 'What is it like for you as a mother to hear your daughter talking about her rapist?' That's a question I've thought about many times since. I still don't know how to answer it. But it's one of the reasons I agreed to write a second memoir of Elena's anorexia from my point of view, Hope and Other Luxuries, when Chronicle Books asked for it. I felt I owed Elena that openness about my own hidden feelings after all the openness and frankness she had shown me.

As a writer, I don't judge my characters or want them to be anyone other than exactly who they are. I even feel sympathy for the evil characters in my stories. But as a mother, I was desperate for Elena to be someone other than who she was, which was a desperately ill and unrecovered victim of mental illness. This caused a split in my reactions as I did my interviews with her: half of me would be appalled and deeply distressed by what I was learning while the other half went about methodically looking for patterns and clues. This is a process I describe in Hope and Other Luxuries, where I record the process of writing her memoir, including some of our interviews, almost word for word.

During the first year, as I worked on Elena Vanishing, Elena grew sicker and sicker, until her life was again in real danger. The hardest thing about the writing then was setting aside my own anger and frustration to let Elena's character speak. Finally, I even had to face planning what I would do with the memoir if Elena died. I decided that it was the best thing we two had to offer the world and that I would still try to finish it.

Elena's work to reveal her inner motivations to me and my work to turn Elena into a character ended up giving both of us a safe place to work out the issues that had pulled us apart. Elena could talk freely because she didn't have to worry about hurting my feelings, and I could respond not as a terrified mother but as an interested spectator. As we wrote Elena Vanishing, we both worked together toward a higher goal than our own self-interest: we wanted to find and write the truth.

After years of bouncing between task managers, I always end up coming back to OmniFocus. In 2019, after finally reading Getting Things Done and having it really click with me, I don't see how I could use anything else in the near future; OmniFocus is just so damn amazing.

Today I want to take you on a quick tour of how I use OmniFocus to get my life in order.

Overview

I use OmniFocus for personal and work items, and the app has a few tools that make it much better at doing this than any other GTD app I've used (skip to 'Perspectives' for details on this). I also really like that the app gives me the ability to customize the look and feel to design the sort of task manager that I want, and hide most of the stuff I don't care about.

I'm also in love with how you can tell The Omni Group cares deeply about building top-notch iOS and macOS apps as each version of the app works extremely well.

This all adds up to an app that has enough control to let me structure my tasks well without adding friction which could discourage me from dumping all of my 'stuff' into it.

Tags and Projects

I could be more detailed here, but for me I really only use tags and ignore projects almost entirely. Tags, as I use them, are simply used to separate my work into the different parts of my life. I have the following tags set up:

work

personal

birchtree

freelance

shopping

reading

These 6 tags let me quickly filter my stuff into the major parts of my life. The first 4 are pretty normal, while 'shopping' is my shopping list and 'reading' is my reading list, something I've addressed at length already.

Perspectives

These tags are the main tool I use for my custom perspectives, and these perspectives are what really make OmniFocus work for me.

My usage: I only want to see my work tasks when I'm at work and my personal tasks when I'm at home. OmniFocus lets me do this with perspectives.

Without getting too into the details, perspectives let you set filters for what tasks you want to see in a view. You can save as many of these as you want, with the idea being that you can view similar tasks together. For me this means a 'Work' perspective that only shows me things I can do at work. When I get home, I no longer care about work, so I have a 'Home' perspective that only shows things I care about in my personal life. If I'm looking to work on this website, then I jump in the 'BirchTree' perspective and look at blog post and podcast ideas.

And because OmniFocus has lots of customization options, you get very deep control over how these perspectives display. You can have them in 3 different task layouts and have them sorted and filtered however you want. Here's what I have going on with my 'Work' perspective, for example:

And here's what I have for 'No Due Date' which is a perspective I use to look at items that have moved beyond my inbox but don't have a due date yet. I find tasks like this have a tendency to get lost, so reviewing this perspective every now and again is very useful.

Inbox

One of the key tenants of GTD is having an inbox that you can easily add things to and then triage at a later time. OmniFocus is very good at getting things into your inbox, whether it be on iOS or macOS. On iOS it simply has a share sheet item that can save pretty much anything from a file to a website. It's a little less universal on the Mac, but there is a Chrome extension, as well as a system share extension for Safari and other native Mac apps.

The Mac also has the benefit of being able to set up a keyboard shortcut (I use Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Space) to bring up a quick task entry pop up from anywhere. I use this all the time for adding quick things that come up through the day, and this also makes it easy to tab through things like projects, tags, notes, and due dates to set all of that right away. You can see this in action here.

I think Todoist does a better job at letting you add tasks with more info (their natural language parsing is great) but OmniFocus more than gets the job done for me.

The Forecast View

In addition to the custom views allowed by perspectives, I really like the Forecast view in OmniFocus. This view simply shows you what's next. Forecast only cares about due dates, so this mixes projects and tags, but often this is a good view for me.

I really like that if I decide I am not going to get a task done today, I can just drag the task to another date on the calendar and it's immediately changed to that day. No other task manager I've used has made it so easy and tactile to move tasks around. And of course this works on iOS and macOS.
