#BTS
170424 BTS = The 'Dirt Spoon Rebellion'?
(* T/N: “Dirt spoon” is often used in Korean as a contrast to the saying, “born with a silver spoon in mouth.” Because BTS was not from a big entertainment company (like most popular groups), they are said to be leading a “rebellion” where smaller companies can succeed.)
After debuting in June 2013, this group is now nearing their fourth anniversary. Just two years after winning Rookie of the Year, they placed first in a music awards show, and went on to win the grand prize at an End of the Year Awards one year later. Now, Korea seems to be too small a country for them as they dominate overseas tours. They are also being dubbed as “Billboard’s favorite K-Pop Group.” This is BTS, a group writing a true success story. BTS is part of Bighit Entertainment. A medium-sized entertainment company founded by producer Bang Si-Hyuk. Although its scale falls short in terms of other big companies, he was able to lead BTS into massive success, and now leads Korea’s K-Pop industry. We’ve interviewed Bang Si-Hyuk, the leader of this “Dirt Spoon Rebellion.” We were able to hear his thoughts, reason for success, and future plans for BTS.
Q: I’ll get straight to the point. What do you think is the reason for BTS’s huge success? Bang SiHyuk: To be honest, I’m not sure. But after listening to fans and reporters, the performances, musical trends they followed, and the inclusion of personal stories in their music were the main reasons. They were able to sympathize with youths all over the world. Their active online presence on social networking sites also seem to be bringing BTS closer to their fans.
Q: Didn’t you also lead the trend in multi-part albums with the School trilogy and HYYH duology? A: Lots of older groups did series albums in the past, I guess you can say BTS brought the trend back. But as much as it can seem planned by the company, we don’t rely on a spark (of idea) to lead these album series. We just make sure BTS gets to tell their own stories in their albums. That might be the reason why BTS has so many series albums: putting everything into one long album can be too much at once. It wasn’t special planning- it just happened to happen this way.
Q: Could you say that BTS’s initial concepts changed since their debut? A: That depends on the way you look at it. Idols rely a lot on concepts and planning, and if you look at it from a musical perspective, BTS did produce in a lot of different genres (“colors”). A lot of people say it’s different, or BTS ‘changed,’ but in the company, no one uses the words “change” or “transformation.” BTS’s original goal of telling stories of teenagers and young adults hasn’t changed. The members simply go with the musical trend and popular rhythms in their age group. Some fans might say they’ve left behind the “original concept,” but for the most part, fans know that they’ve never strayed from their original concept. Since debut, BTS has been telling the stories of themselves and their generation: the good, bad, and ugly parts included. We never think about what kind of “concepts” to do next.
Q: The members seem quite active in making music (i.e. publishing mixtapes, collaborating with other artists). A: I prefer leaving them to make music freely. I don’t interfere with BTS in terms of making music. The company can help them in making high-quality and finished songs, but I don’t believe in trying to change their musical direction. Each member’s personal preferences are most important. Before anything comes to me, the members would’ve already edited their music with the producers, so the only thing I really listen for is the finished quality of the songs (whether they’re fit for public consumption). There are also a lot of collaboration requests coming in but I don’t touch them at all. There’s only one rule with those: if the artist contacts BTS and they work well together (musically), then they can work together. The company has never really requested a collaboration with someone else for the “bigger picture.”
Q: The members of BTS seem to be very active on social media. A: We leave that up to the members. This also isn’t part of a marketing scheme. It’s just that the company doesn’t really restrict members from doing anything. All I ask is that the members use one account, as a team, and they opened a group account even before debuting. The members understand that it’s a group account, and enjoy using it. They all like the fandom culture and seem to be running it well on their own. The members all create so much content by themselves that it’s hard to post them all.
Q: BTS has a huge international fandom, but it’s interesting to see that none of the members are from overseas. A: Actually, I wasn’t expecting such a huge international fandom for BTS. When BTS first launched, I tried to keep the “traditions” of a K-Pop idol group. Instead of relying solely on the music, I paid attention to the performance and even the music videos. I guess the troubles teenagers/youth face are the same worldwide, which is why they’re able to sympathize even with international fans. Using YouTube also makes it much easier to communicate with fans overseas. Some fans also try to get more people to like BTS by translating posts and circulating them. I’m very thankful. There was something very interesting that I saw recently- in Estonia, a country near the Baltic Sea, a dance studio added a ‘BTS Dance Class.’ It was very cool to see.
Q: How was the recent tour in North and South America? A: It exceeded my expectations. I knew we were popular in the US, but I wasn’t expecting such a response from South American fans. The explosion of ticket sales when tour dates were announced was incredible, and seeing the fandom spread from South America to the North and to LA was even more incredible to see. I guess BTS really is popular (laughs). I feel like the only reason we’re able to be this popular is because another K-Pop star and company came before us. And because of it, we feel a responsibility to open the same path (into Western culture) for others.
Q: How do you feel about BTS being called the “dirt spoon”? A: It’s definitely not a term we started using first. Some people might think we use this term (in marketing) to set ourselves apart from the rest of the industry, but I don’t like people seeing it that way. To make it clear, we don’t want that kind of marketing at all. “Dirt spoon” isn’t a term we can deny or dislike, because it’s true that BTS became hugely popular despite coming from a company with no special worth (as a brand). Because we started with no assets and succeeded, in a way, the term “dirt spoon” is understandable, but I hope people don’t misunderstand that we use the term as a marketing tool.
Q: I heard about the one thing BTS doesn’t have- rumors of conflict. A: It’s a given, seeing that there is no real disharmony between the members. They all love each other to death. Of course, because there are seven males, there will be an occasional fight, but they were taught to solve conflicts on their own. Each member has learned this 100% by themselves. They all get along so well that it’s interesting how there are no major conflicts at all. Maybe this is the secret in running the long run, like Shinhwa.
Q: You must know that as the number of fans increase, so do the number of antis. A: I think there’s a reasonable level at which we can accept them. But if they attack us with rumors that are not true or attack members’ characters, it’s something beyond just being an anti-fan. We’ve already reported incidents to the police. It’s an unforgivable thing to do. The culture of lying and bringing others down behind anonymity (online) is unacceptable. However, people are free to express their own opinions freely, because the internet is equal and anonymous. But we can’t sit back and watch people attack the members. We’re starting to deal with these issues one by one, even though they take up time and resources. Above anything else, the members are severely affected by these antis- they’re still young. They do get hurt, especially when people spread false rumors regarding the production of music and other contents. Our only pride is in the music and contents we’ve produced with sincerity since debuting. We’ve reached a limit on the acceptance of these antis, and we will start to take action against these antis.

Reasons why each member is a part of Seventeen
TL:DR So you don’t have to read all of this but the point is that EACH member belongs in Seventeen and EACH member belongs in their unit. Some members can be in more than one unit but their position right now is the position that makes them shine THE MOST (individually and as a group). It’s so annoying to hear people say that this member wasn’t able to be in the unit because of another member. Some carats might say these reasons are obvious but some young carats need a little help seeing it.
Seungcheol: He’s the general leader and he leads damn well. He looks at the members adoringly and gives seventeen a good image by being so polite to staff, sunbaes..and everyone. He has a very strong, powerful rap and will contribute well to seventeen’s future badass concepts.
Joshua: Pledis didn’t go all the way to Los Angeles to monitor this boy for a month for no reason. He has a gentlemen aura that is perfectly paired with his gentle voice that makes any girl swoon. He has the musical ability and passion to learn how to play the guitar and arrange music. Have you heard of their remake of “Later Later”? His voice also suits well with the rest of the vocal members for harmony.
Jeonghan: His voice color is unique and he brings variability to the vocal team. It would not be interesting if everyone sounds the same. His voice (along with Joshua) suits sweet ballads. Don’t even get me started at Jeonghan’s high note. If his confidence for his voice gets higher, I think it would sound even better.
Woozi: Do I even have to explain why? He’s also a triple threat-he can sing, compose, dance. He saved Pledis and is one of the reason why seventeen has the title of “self-producing idols” and were able to debut. (I fell in love with woozi when he shared his burden with us in seventeen project. He was very torn apart when he thought about how 13 careers are in his hands..*shiver I’m getting goosebumps from thinking about that scene).
Wonwoo: Wonwoo is a pretty well rounded idol. He sings, dance, raps well (waiting for the day I say he acts well..which he will). His character is unique, loveable and attractive. He reads a lot, so he’s good with words when writing rap lyrics. Like Dino has mentioned before, he’s really good at narrative rap.
Jun: When he kicks at “Aju Nice!,” I fly back. His dance is so powerful, he catches attention. He incorporates his martial arts with his dance performances and contributes to choreography. He sings well and continuously works hard to show a good image to Chinese fans on behalf of seventeen.
Hoshi: Hoshi is one the personalities in seventeen that makes this group unique. He’s like the second overall leader next to seungcheol. He works hard in choreographing the title songs and makes sure that everyone has their moment to shine. His dedication motivates me and it undoubtly motivates the members.
Mingyu: I usually do not favor the obvious visual of the group, but mingyu is not just good for his visuals. I don’t think anyone in the group can do melody rap as well as he does. I love the singy-song type rap, and it softens and gives the song a break from the hard, strong rap.
Seokmin: Power vocal. Dances well. Brings happiness to the other members. His voice is crisp, clean and fresh. I really like his high notes.
Minghao: The fact that he can adapt well with a group that has been together for years is amazing. The8 makes breakdancing look easy with his flexibility. I have faith in his potential to sing and rap.
Vernon: His enunciation for each word without sounding unnatural is a talent. His voice is clean and strong without having to scream. Also, his lyrics are deep and have a lot of meaning for a 19 year old.
Seungkwan: Seungkwan…his voice conveys so much emotion. I don’t even understand korean but when he sings, I can feel the emotion the lyricist intended the listener to feel. Boo Seungkwan saves seventeen’s image many time, see here for the post I’ve written.
Dino: The maknae has so much talent already at his age. He raps well, he sings well, he dances well, he has stage presence and he’s adorable. Maknae is a hard job, but someone has to do it…and he does it well. He listens to his hyungs well and they adore him.

Hoshi Appreciation Rant
Okay but Hoshi is honestly so talented??? Like, his dancing is lit (as per usual) and of course we all know about him choreographing most dances (with help at times, performance unit I see you) but like…that’s incredible. A ROOKIE is in charge of choreographing dances for the group they’re in. From day one. Not like the chance was given after a few comebacks and he got to throw in a few parts that he made up, NO it’s his literal job to do the entire dance to every song. Okay so we established that he’s amazing already. He doesn’t need to do anything else bc he’s already gifted. But hERE HE IS being a great singer too!! And I’m so glad that he gets lots of lines in songs (sometimes more than jihan and they’re vocal unit) to show off that great voice. So we got a great dancer/choreographer/vocalist. Okay cool. Hoshi you can stop being amazing now, you already won. NOPE THERES MORE! He has been helping Woozi write songs too!!! Now that he has taken an interest in writing, is there anything that he can’t do? I’m telling you, Hoshi is coming for us all. Either stan him now or don’t get mad when he takes over the world. You have your chance right now. If you’re not Team Hoshi then what are you doing? So we got all of those skills that he possesses and you think he’s done yet? Really? You think it’s all over? Noooooope his personality is top notch. He’s funny af and he doesn’t have to be mean or rude to be funny. His members love him very much and light up when he (and the other gag trio members) are around. He can work a sexy concept (y'all saw that solo stage. You know the one) and his aegyo is next level. He’s well rounded. What more could you ask for? Hoshi is truly talented, hilarious, great at variety, hard working, GORGEOUS, and is just a good person all around. He’s everything I could ever ask for in a male idol and I’m so proud to be a Hoshi stan.

Ok so I’ve been reading the whole controversy about Suho what was the intent of what he said what was the context yadahyadahyadah you all already know about that. The thing is the intent behind it has been so twisted by people that they are blindly following these popular bloggers.
Now this was on a Vapp livestream about 8 to 9 months ago (why it was brought up now I have no idea but whatever) and the question was basically in what age range would you date in. He says people the same zodiac as him, and if you don’t know Suho’s Chinese (not western like Cancer or Libra) zodiac is the Goat. He was born in 1991.
Ok, so what are the years of the goat? 2015 is one (and he left that one out for obvious reasons), so the next one is 2003. That’s about 13/14 year olds. He just did the math and it was 14 and 38. Then he realized “Oh wait that’s too young.” I don’t think he’s going after fucking 14 year old girls, he did the math quickly and then realized “Oh wait no, that’s too young.”
Then he says “Come to me when you are older.” Now, for some of you sick fucks, you just automatically thought “Omg look he’s being a predator telling girls to waste their youth on him.” I never got that message from, y'all got an inch and made mile out of it. You know what he didn’t even give you an inch you just started screaming for no reason.
I didn’t get the message that he was telling girls to waste their youth waiting so it’s legal and acceptable, I got a “Maybe once you are older I’ll consider you but for right now, you are too young. Right now don’t waste your time on me.” And then he lets go of the conversation and noves onto the next question. That’s it. And nobody ever questioned it, Korean and International fans alike, because it isn’t something that should need to be explained! But some idiotic bimbo points it out EIGHT MONTHS LATER and calls him a predator and you all just hop on the hate bandwagon. AGAIN.
You can call Exo talentless hacks with no redeemable qualities and I’ll be fine. You can call them out for all of their “microaggressions” or whatever buzzword you use nowadays and I won’t give a damn.
The very second you accuse any of them of being predators or of fucking pedophilia, I will go in on you. To throw around that term for innocent people is when you lose all respect and I consider you the scum of the earth. You have no evidence on that, just because your sensitive ass mistook something is not sexual harrassment or rape or any of that. How dare you throw around that term so loosely, all you are doing is hurting innocent people and real victims. That is one of the most disgusting crimes and for someone to use it so nonchalantly with no evidence sickens me.
And I’m not just talking about Suho. Did you know Kyungsoo has been called a predator for his movie Pure Love, even though he was casted first and talked to the director to take out a kiss scene so Sohyun wouldn’t be uncomfortable? Or maybe how apparently some people have been saying Jongdae looked at Daeul in the “wrong” way? Oh yeah, I’m not even kidding, Suho isn’t the only one.
Your words have effect on these people’s lives. You are not just an anonymous tumblr post, you are a person making a serious accusation on no factual basis. I’ve seen people say they despise Suho, that they want him to drink bleach, etc. All because of a few bloggers who took something that didn’t matter and made it huge. Suho is a dorky man who makes bad jokes and loves Bulbasaur but when it comes down to it is such a respectable and hardworking person and someone I look up to. I can’t believe someone would accuse this man of being a predator with no facts. Whoever started this, you disgust me.

hello^^ i was wondering if you have any tips on drawing hair? i love your art style and you're always so creative with ideas!
Thank you♡
Sure , I’m going to try to make a hair tutorial and give you some tips ^-^
Hair tutorial
Tumblr media Tumblr media
big size of both pics here
This time I take colours from ref pic. The most dark and the most light and then medium ones. I chose a “base colour”, a medium tone  and I cover the surface but not until the “margin” (1)
Tumblr media
Then with the same colour and little size,  I draw little lines arround where the hair ends, making the hair final form (2) I add dark colours but with a bigger brush and paint the roots (2-3) then a lighter colours (4-5-6) with a brush a bit smaller than before, and I start making more lines intensifying the colour (7-8) if the lines are too strong can blend a bit /not with blur tool ! using same colour but bigger size/ (9) and I keep adding ligh colour and make the highligh more strong (10-11) I continue mixing small lines with more bigger ones selecting diferent colours of the hair until I like the result (is a bit weird to explain. Don’t worry if it takes a mount of time,  because actually does) (12-13-14)  I prefer make this unperfect effect, but is optional. I draw random tiny lines and then I connect them to the rest of hair.
All this with 60-70% opacity exept at first (1) when I made the big colour area, in 100%
*the blue numbers in the hair pic process are the colours I added in every step*
*some finished hair*
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some tips :
Tumblr media
big size here
About brushes and how to use them, I don’t recomend you a strong round brush without opacity control (like first). When I draw hair I always have this option activated (the green circle) and most of times I decrease the opacity to 60-80 too. Also I like to use a soft-texturized brush (3) and then when I make the details-little lines I change to a hard brush (2) but with presure control.
The last thing I show in this pic, is how can make a brush more adaptable to presure (the brush is a basic hard one).
*the numbers are for identify the kind of  brush *
Tumblr media Tumblr media
About colours. I recommend you change a bit the tone (like in the pic of color pickers). I mean, if you want brown hair don’t select the light, medium and dark from the same exactly tone, move it a bit. This can add to the hair the effect of more natual. Also as in the other pic, I don’t recomend you use 100% black (except if it’s so dark and contrasted)  for dark hair or black. If you try to add a bit of colour can make it look more real. If you want black hair, I recommend you more a blue subtone but also depends of the light etc.
Also is so important know where the point of light comes. The effect depends amount of the kind of light. Also ain’t the same wet hair than dry.
One more thing , always follow the direction of hair.
Probably I’m forgeting things, but hope can help (plus some of you also asked for a tutorial since time ago too :3)

seokmin’s looks: a mature, strong-looking man, probably a well-known actor as well, could be a model, mesmerising charms that make it hard to look away from him
seokmin’s personality: says “beep boop beep boop” instead of “excuse me” to make people move out of his way

baby boo, you mean the sweetest and most considerate boo
the number of times seungkwan saved seventeen’s image
1) The time in One Fine Day when they were cooking samgyupsal and it got caught on fire. The only sensible thing to use was the beomdong to put the fire out. While holding the beomdong, Seungkwan bowed deeply and apologized to the beomdong ajummas for ruining it and wasting their hard work.
2) While in the waiting room, a couple members play the game where they drink a mouthful of water (without swallowing) and try to make each other laugh. Not even 3 seconds pass, and all the boys are rushing to find a place to take cover in case they spit water out. Jeonghan (being the lazy ass he is) stayed seated and spat on the carpet (of course not on purpose). Seungkwan saw the accident and quickly covered the water stain with his feet.
3) The members were playing a quiz game and the question was, “In One Fine Day, they sang ‘Unconditional,’ who is the singer? Seokmin forgot the surname of the famous trot singer, Park Sang Chul and wrote LEE Sang Chul instead. Lately people get bashed about this kind of stuff, but Seungkwan made Seokmin apologize and had him sing the famous trot. Since Seokmin sang it flawlessly, I think he was able to save his image.
4) Seungkwan participated in the Duet Song Festival. He made it known to the public that he is a seventeen member. If you watched the performance, I’m pretty sure he also made it known to the public that seventeen is a talented group.
5) I see this in andromeda episodes a lot, where the members are just being themselves and making ugly faces-seungkwan would cover part of their faces to save their image.
**Will add more, Seungkwan is so kind, the list is bound to grow. :)

So I had the opportunity to work alongside Seventeen on their Shining Diamonds tour
Firstly, I just have to say WOW. I had the chance to sit through rehearsals and they are all so talented and incredible. Even during rehearsals, (which lasted a whole 3 hours wtf) not once did they slack off or become lazy. They went HARD man, it was so cool and inspiring to watch and made me want to work harder at my job too.
Secondly, they are all such kind boys! They were all very polite and thanked the crew members for our hard work. Joshua asked me how long I had been at the venue, to which I told him ‘10 hours with no break’ and then he was like ‘Whoa, please make sure to get some rest after this, yeah?’ he then thanked us again for working so hard for them.
Vernon also thanked me for helping with their hitouch/photo op and we had a little exchange in Korean which was cool. He was really surprised when I started speaking and I think he was also relieved because he was complaining that English is sometimes difficult for him and that he’s actually not as fluent as everyone thinks he is.
Hoshi was a lot more quiet than he is on stage, which really surprised me! But some of the crew made him laugh over something silly and he seemed to perk up a bit and smile a little more!
Seungkwan is really funny and also pretty tall! He was walking up and down our hallway doing his vocal warm ups, but got scolded because he wasn’t supposed to be in our area, but instead back in the dressing room. (which was on the otherside of the stage)
Vernon is also very dorky, which I found really endearing. When we finished hitouch, we all cheered and celebrated together and I was doing finger guns just because I’m a dork and out of the corner of my eye I could see Vernon imitating me, so I turned and did the finger guns at him and he started giggling and grinning and did it back.
All in all, Seventeen are a wonderful group of kids. I didn’t get to speak to them all, we shared a few little moments but generally just work related things. No matter how exhausted they were, they were all so kind and caring towards their co-workers and made sure that we were all acknowledged for our hardwork.
I honestly wish them the best and for them to be as successful as they possibly can be because they are so lovely and work so hard to do their best at everything.
