Exploring the Whispering Valley
Emerald Sunrise snaps out of her dark thoughts at “Where’s D'arca?“ being called out.
Professor Gray looks shocked.
Professor Gray WINCED, covering his ears at the sudden onslaught of. sound, of– of a clinic in chaos. He looked around– eyes darting this way and that, wildly.
Emerald Sunrise: "Where is my brother?”
Sleepy Cat is cut off in her well-meaning inquiry by the cacophony, letting out a terrified whimper and instinctively throwing her hands over her ears to block out the horrible noise. “–hhaa–aahh, FUCK!”
K'velkha Odh sets herself immediately to the defensive, the sudden shift in the environment more than cause enough to put her effort towards wards and counterspells. Stamping her stave against the tile floor, the crystal atop it glows with a soft amethyst dweomer to contrast the darkness - the air about her glimmering with aetherial potency.
Professor Gray: “…I know what’s–” abruptly, Gray began pounding on the walls. “We have to get him out. We have to– WE HAVE TO GET HIM OUT.” His hand became wreathed in flame as he assaulted the wall–each strike caved the wall in, revealing swirling, gaseous black–only for the wall to reconstruct. They were not ‘in the clinic.’ Neither were they in The Nightmare, per se.
Emerald Sunrise is not enthused by the lack of response from the group and throws open the nearest door, having no time for bullshittery. “D'arca?” She called out, hoping to find a path to him.
Sleepy Cat keeps her back to Vel, stepping back with care as she does her best to cope with – the fucking doors are gone, the walls are wrong, there’s no coping with this! Fuck this!
P'tajha Kett ’s ears flatten into her hair and she flinches down, away from the sound–though it comes from all directions; and as Velkha’s light illuminates the now-doorless wall before her (along with Gray’s flame-wreathed strikes) she reaches out to set a hand on the wall as it repairs itself. “…”
Professor Gray: “–D'ARCA. DARCA CAN– ..can you hear us?”
P'tajha Kett: “I doubt it,” she mutters. ((with @diarcaexe @lominsadan @rhotanored and if the rest of y’all have tumblrs, I don’t know them))

Bound
It feels like free falling, when the shadows swallow her; like being submerged only it’s not wet, not cold, not anything but dark and empty. She can hear G'rha and the others discussing their options, her betrayal–he mentions Jia, and the rigid grin of what had felt so powerfully like triumph falls from her features, falters, the sound of their voices garbled and fading as she’s sinking farther and farther into the black.
P'tajha Kett, you great fool. She thinks, as the silence becomes deafening, the darkness suffocating–but before it can become unbearable she’s surfacing with a breathless gasp from the shallows of the Burnt Lizard Creek, upright and dry, save for now, where the lazy current tugs at her coat and her thighs and her boots stick fast in the muck. Instinct, then, crawls up her spine and guides her hands to wrench the ring from her finger, gets so far as to reel her arm back as though to hurl the cursed thing into the creek to be lost for another age–
Tumblr media
Her fist doesn’t open; it tightens, and returns to her side. She was P’tajha Kett and she knew better that to put her faith in the whispers of a relic, the legacy of a despot–but she was Red, too. She was no museum curator, no timid mage, no hero bound by her morality or her fear. The ring was a tool, and what made it dangerous was its wielder; she would not be afraid of it–but oh, now, now there were those who could be afraid.
Her palm opens and her mismatched gaze turns down to take the ring in, now, glittering in the dark while the stars rose high above–long shadows slither around her, filling the mud-lined walls of the creek and casting the murky waters into the darkness of night. She removes her clawed gloves slowly, and deliberately slips the pale, strangely innocuous bone ring back onto her finger. The gem–if one could really call it that–glints dully in the rising starlight, and the ring warms easily against her skin; some of her fingers still bore the last remnant scarring where she’d been left to dig herself free from the Tomb of the Sun.
Tumblr media
So she’d wear it, for now. As long as she could control it, no matter the will of the ring–it would be at her disposal, not the other way around. She’d be careful, of course. Take precautions, document the effects, monitor her own condition; and if indeed she could master it, that whispered promise of life and death may make all the difference, make any risk …worthwhile.
First, however, she needed to get out of this mucky ravine.

HEY ALL!
It’s that time again! We’ve really found our stride in the past few months, and are comfortable opening up our doors for recruitment again! We’ve a regular schedule of events going now, with lots going on at all times--and we’d love for you to be a part of it! COME JOIN UP WITH THE DIRT NERDS!
[RELIC] IS NOW RECRUITING!
Tumblr media
Located in the Goblet, Ward 9, Plot 15 sits a small, decorated building overlooking the Brimming Heart. There was a dinosaur out front, and a moai statue. Occasionally, angry shouts could be heard, and the sound of drills and chisels. It was a pretty hard place to miss, if you frequented The Goblet. Attached to its front placard is a notice written in bold, large lettering: NOW HIRING: ACQUISITIONS EXPERTS, INTERNS, AND RESEARCHERS AND FOR THE PURPOSES OF GROWING A MUSEUM AND ACQUISITIONS COMPANY. INQUIRE WITHIN.
Contact Professor Gray for details.
Which is to say: RELIC is currently recruiting! We’re a neutral-aligned (though good-leaning) medium/heavy RP-FC with three stated goals: 1) Be a museum, and expand from a small repurposed home to a full-fledged facility with several dedicated wings. 2) Provide acquisition services, retrieving artifacts from any manner of location and situation, both from NPCs and PCs in and out of our FC, and in doing so facilitate community engagement and meaningful interactions. 3) Secure and contain particularly dangerous or unpredictable artifacts behind the scenes, and keep them safe from the hands of megalomaniacs, desperate fellows, and general rabble-rousers who think a vase capable of granting forbidden knowledge at the cost of parts of your soul and a gradual loss of your autonomy is a wise investment. More succinctly: we strive to offer community engagement and short, event-based RP through retrieval of artifacts for clients, and long-term, narrative-driven RP through the discovery, containment, or in occasional cases destruction of particularly dangerous, strange, unpredictable artifacts. The company is good leaning, as stated, although many of those working within it’s halls have come from all walks of life–and shady wheeling and dealing, heists, and rat races against crooks are just as likely as delving into ancient ruins with a team of expert scholars, when working with the Museum.
We feature a quest system, with Main Quests, DM’d by the Officers, sidequests, which may be DM’d by anyone, and character quests, which are user-generated content, either DM’d by the creator or, at request, an officer, and utilize a monster of the week hack for our event system–if you’re new to tabletops, we’ll be happy to teach you–it’s a simple system!
Already in an FC?
No problem! We have a handy affiliate status which gives you access to events, the linkshell, and our discord–you’re a member in all ways except FC chat and FC-room access. We value community engagement, networking, and having fun above all else!

A VERY DUSTY STARLIGHT
Professor Gray had arranged a party, for his employees and friends, to celebrate his favorite time of year. Among the guests were Romina Lucretius, Professor Qico, Xev’tan Tatse, K’velkha Odh, Sleepy Cat, and a guest among them, Jeremiah Greycastle. Briefly, Gray’s dear friend and brother-in-spirit Ruran Vas also attended.
The party went as well as could be expected. Which is to say, the entirety of the time was spent harassing their good founder and company leader to the point of exasperated sighs and sulking in a corner. Donuts, starlight cake, and a roasted dodo were served while the group talked about their latest endeavors, and the past embarrassing ventures of their dearest leader. Twelve help the poor man.
The night culminated in a gift-exchange game, in which different members of the party took terms opening presents, or stealing presents already claimed. At the end of the night, the gifts and their owners were as follows: Professor Gray: A can of Jam, which upon opening, released spring-loaded paper worms about the room.
Romina: A photo of Rha, naked and unconscious, with a certain someone dropping their certain unmentionables over his face. Thanks, Xev’tan. Really. Thanks.
K’velkha: A box which upon opening promptly exploded into fireworks and confetti. Remaining inside were coordinates. For what? Who knows.
Professor Qico: One-thousand “allagan silver pieces,” along with a book titled: “Glamours and Illusionment: A Practical Guide.”
Sleepy Cat:  A Little Black Book. It contained an embarrassing secret of every scheduled attendee at the party.
Xev’tan: A large, inappropriately shaped dousing rod which detected nearby magic.
Jeremiah Greycastle: A single phial of vitality potion, with the label, “...You know ;)”.
The Professor wishes he had never thrown the party.

THE FORGOTTEN TOMB OF SUSUYOTA, pt. I
Ruran Vas led G’rha Nunh and several of his museum associates deep beneath the Temple of Qarn, to a winding maze that the masked knight had recently unearthed and had been slowly mapping out. Ruran had planned beforehand which branch they would explore this time, though the path and its end were unknown to him.
Traversing through traps and darkened halls, they arrived at a strange pedestal with an ancient dagger resting upon it. Stone guardians stood tall around them. Most certainly a trap, they all expected, and so they prepared for the worst.
Rha took the dagger, and when he did, the guardians rumbled to life. Fiona Delaine threw a shield up to protect the group while Ruran, Rha, Emerald Sunrise and D’arca Ovraen attacked the guardians through the barrier. Solid strikes caused the living statues to crumble, and soon enough, the group had earned its prize.
Tugging at a strange latch on the hilt, Rha discovered a hidden compartment within the dagger. A decorated key dropped out, and the group agreed to allow Ruran to keep it, just in case it could be used elsewhere in the labyrinth.
With the path explored, the group returned. Although it had not led to where Ruran had hoped, he could not deny that good progress had been made.

Secrets of the Sagolii Pt. 2:
Far past civilization, in the furthest reaches of the Sagolii desert, there stood a pass. G’rha Nunh had assembled a team of friends and employees alike, in braving the Trial of the Priest, one of three trials, relating to three gems necessary to unlock the tomb of Viceregent Shoshotepo. The trial was comprised of two parts--first, the path to the gem’s hiding place itself, a pass known in records as the Path of Azeyma, through which only a narrow, winding strip was safe to traverse. As Rha demonstrated with a tossing of a stone, any errant step resulted in being swallowed by the sands themselves. After a brief survey of the ambient atmosphere, D’arca Ovraen managed to identify trails of aether suspended throughout the pass. With the cooperation of Eleanor Blackfeather, the two were able to supply a charge of magic through the environment. The resultant streaks of light which arced through the dim desert pass became the compass by which they traversed. One wonders if this was truly how the Priests of Qarn (or the Reliquarium’s competition) intended the trial to be overcome. Perhaps it didn’t matter. The Light of Azeyma lit the path forward, bringing them to the remnants of a shrine.
The shrine door was remarkably well kept, and depicted two priests. One of which held a dagger into the air, a vicious snarl carved into his features. The other was bowed in deference. To either side, were a pair of statues in a twisted, corrupted visage of Azeyma. Instead of holding the sun as her fan, she held knives stained red. Professor Qico, along with the help of Rha, managed to identify hieroglyphs upon the mural--to open the way, a Priest must show both their will and deference to the Gods. Before the party had much time to contemplate, the statues stirred in response to the reading. A stone knife came down, slicing through Rha’s tricep, as well as knocking him down by the sheer weight of it. As the blood came into contact with the statue, one of its eyes began to glow! The other statue began its advance towards the rest of the party, with as much murderous intent behind its eyes as an inanimate object could have (which, for the record, is a surprisingly large amount).
Enraged and panicked, Memma Rha released a blast of potent magic which quickly obliterated the advancing statue. Having shown it her will, the eyes of the statue began to glow just as it shattered. Half of the mural--the aggressing priest--upon the door began to give off a vibrant blue light. The other statue was promptly shattered as well, but in vain--the statue quickly reanimated itself! Operating off of the relationship between the eyes, the mural, and how the reanimating statue responded firstly to the presence of blood, and not the act of aggression, Emerald Sunrise then understood the devotion of a priest. Cutting her own hand, she placed it upon the statue, adding to the blood of the professor. The eyes lit once more, and the deferential priest began to glow in turn with the agressor. The door began to rise, sliding upwards to reveal a chysoprase dagger! They party had obtained their reward! Sunny treated Rha’s wounds, and they returned the gem to the vault. However, Nonoimo Totoimo likely will not be pleased, at The Professor’s decision to move forward without him--and the man is still in possession of The Sun gem. In response, our intrepid heroes will likely be finding themselves with an uninvited guest upon their doorstep, quite soon.

Secrets of the Sagolii pt. 1: Rising Suns
Tumblr media
Nonoimo leaned back across a chaise longue, taking up far less space than the length of the furnishing but letting no-one else near. Across the hall, the surprisingly lanky, spindly looking lalafell watched as women danced for him on a stage which he had made specifically for that purpose. He spun a comically villainous mustache before stroking along its length. If this were a film, which this absolutely wasn’t, because not only do films not exist and what are we even talking about but this is absolutely real life, there would be some ominous score in the background or something.
If all had gone to plan, it would be at about this time that The Professor and his...well, whatever she was, would be staging their attempt to obtain the armillary sphere from his competition at Velena Imports. When he had caught wind that they were trying to unlock Shoshotepo’s tomb, he had sensed an opportunity. He had heard of the man. In The Field, it wasn’t hard. Every archaeology enthusiast had at least passing knowledge of the man, and those with...criminal leanings, were keenly aware of how much trouble him and his ilk had once been, many years ago. True, perhaps the man was on the straight and narrow now--or as narrow as someone like him could ever be, but at one time, he and his were nothing bout pain and quite a few financial losses. At least one exploding train. Yet, where others see trouble, Nonoimo saw only opportunity.  A threat can be counted as an asset, if only you are mindful of three things:
Everyone has a price. Everyone has something dear to them. Everyone will try and double-cross you.
If one keeps all of that accounted for, anyone can be considered to be in service to you. Every act of treachery just as valuable as your most loyal hounds. Suffice to say, it didn’t take long before he reached out: if they help him, he would give them one of the three gemstones they needed to open the tomb. At least, this is what he had told them. His show was interrupted, as were his thoughts, by the creak of a door followed by the soft chimes of the attached bell to his chambers. His head jerked sharply, and he stared with a shrewd expression towards the intruder. It was a thin, elegant looking hyuran woman which they settled on. One with calm eyes, and a subdued demeanor.
“Father,” she began. Her eyes cast down to the floor, as though ashamed of her intrusion. “I am sorry to interrupt your...show.” The women departed, just as she pardoned herself--they hid behind curtains, or left out another door. Nonoimo’s brow furrowed in disappointment. “We’ve lost another caravan, in the Sagolii.”
“The Amal’jaa?” Nonoimo straightened himself up. He allowed himself a long drag from his pipe before blowing out smoke rings in the direction of the now empty stage.
“No, Father. Not the Amal’jaa. It is...the sands. It swallowed them up, as though it hungered. At the mouth of Azeyma’s Path.” She hesitated, for a moment, “.. Where Azeyma’s path once was.” An important distinction--the ruins they sought were long gone, buried beneath the sands.
Nonoimo couldn’t help but scowl at the--at the incompetence of his men! Never mind that it wasn’t in any meaningful capacity their fault. Villainous madmen don’t exactly think along those lines, you see. “Useless little worms! They’re not worth the alms I throw them. Not the scraps of the scraps of the hounds!” He shoved himself off of his seat and approached the girl. He noticed how she shrank from him, in fear of his anger. He noticeably calmed, the lines fading from his face and his eyes losing their indignation in favor of a calm, placid acceptance. He climbed upon a dresser, confident none could see him in such an embarrassing act, to place his hand upon her cheek. “It is of no matter, Mualla. And this was never your fault. Soon, I shall have Ferun Terun’s Armillary. From there, no path shall ever be unlit by Oschon’s wisdom. All will be well. We just…” a sigh, “need to be patient.”
“And ensure our ‘friend’s’ success?” the girl--Mualla--intoned questioningly.
“Yes, dear.” Another pat to her cheek. “As a matter of fact! If you would be so inclined, perhaps it is time that you proved your value. Go to them. Aid them. Ensure that their efforts come to fruition. A new day comes! Let not the fresh sapling of an organization find itself burned, under the rising sun.”
Mualla couldn’t help but smile, at the notion of--of a chance to prove herself. To be Mualla Katirci no longer. She parted from Nonoimo, mouthing a brief ‘thank you,’ before parting and making her way to meet the band of intrepid scholars and adventurers, at the time they would all inevitably convene for their first expedition.

Ruran Vas motioned for G’rha Nunh to have a seat, either at the bench or the chair in the corner. A few of Ruran’s belongings littered the inn room, including a stash of alcohol by the chair, and a detailed map on the wall with notes and markers. Oddly enough in the somber night’s abode, a plushie of an onion prince sat on his nightstand.
Rha dropped down into his seat, and looked the man over. “The museum, ain’t just a museum.”
Rurans took a seat on the bench and gave a curious cant of his head. “No..? What else do you intend it to be?”
“Containment, and eventual destruction, for the shit that got me. Secure containment. Locks. Wards. Lead. Sentinels.” He was very matter-of-fact about it all. No ambition, no drive—just a goal. “Seal up what can’t be destroyed, get rid of whatever can. If it can’t be safely housed in a museum, it ain’t worth keepin’ at all.”
The masked man straightened. His stone flickered. “Twelve knows we could use more safe places to make sure such dangerous items do not see the light of day again, but… Are you certain this is what you wish to do? After…all you’ve been through?” He was not doubting Rha’s capabilities, but rather the man’s emotional state. “This is the very thing that led to your demise, after all. B-but I suppose that is a good motivator…”
“It ain’t goin’ in my room, for once. Not where there’s easy access.” He drug his hand across his face, withering at the memory of those events. “Too many people, that could wind up how I did. This is secure. Extra secure. Basement-level, every precaution taken. More than one person responsible, in on things. If something happens, the others can act and take accountability should containment be broached.”
“A dangerous endeavor, though I one I believe you could accomplish. I know a few warding runes that could help. Metaphysick may be able to assist with your technology. After the…vase incident, we took strides to reinforce our containment units.”
“I’m…sorry, about that.” He looked up to the ceiling. To the wall. Anywhere but directly at Ruran. “I’d appreciate it. And if—if any of you’ve ever need of archaeological prowess, well. I owe you. All of you, my life.”
Ruran shook his head. “We should have been more prepared. Should have kept a better eye on you. Should have…done a lot of things,” he frowned behind his mask, but he tried to dismiss the matter with a small shrug. “We can call upon you, certainly. I may…have a lead that might interest you, concerning some local ruins.” He waved a dismissive hand—another matter for another time. “Simply speak the word, and I shall help you with your project.”
Rha listened with a spark of interest. He would assuredly follow-up upon the matters of these ruins. “Ruins. We’ll talk, and soon.” He rose to his feet and stretched—he had said what he intended. “I would like you to come see the facilities soon, and get your consult. The same goes to you and yours: speak the word, and I shall arrive.”
Ruran nodded, standing with him to be polite. “I would…like to see it, yes.” Genuine interest wove through his words. “I’m…I’m glad you found me. I am…m-more relieved than I can express.”

ABOUT
Introduction
The Thanalan Acquisitions and Reliquarium (RELIC) is a medium-intensity roleplaying free company on the Balmung server of Final Fantasy XIV. We come from a range of backgrounds and are a mostly tight circle of friends who prefer quality over quantity in membership. We’re NA Based, with most of our events happening between the hours of 4-11PM EST on weekdays, and late on Fridays and Saturdays. RELIC prides itself on collaboration with several other groups and works hard to coordinate schedules with its partners. We’re located in the Goblet, ward 9, plot 15. We are currently using a Monster of the Week hack for our main quests and events. Background Thanalan Acquisitions was established by a notoriously belligerent, stubborn, private, and ambitious man, Dr. Gray (G’rha Nunh), with the intent of realizing his lifelong dream of establishing his own museum. More importantly, after having had enough run-ins with dangerous megalomaniacs and desperate men (and having had his own share of mistakes and hard-learned lessons), Gray sought to create a place where dangerous, unspeakable, esoteric artifacts could be safely contained where they would be unreachable by the likes of those who would seek to abuse them--people, admittedly, like the man he had once been. This secondary goal is kept close to the chest, and only reclaimers and curators know about this goal. In order to facilitate the attainment of these artifacts, as well as to help fund the museum, an acquisitions operation was promptly formed to generate a steady revenue stream as well as help make a name for themselves. What We Do We’re scholars, treasure-hunters, well-intentioned thieves, and adventurers! Our RP largely revolves around acquisition of artifacts and day-to-day museum life through our robust Quest System, occasional public events centered around entertainment and education of the public, as well as taking acquisition requests from both NPCs, FC Members, and non-FC members alike to facilitate community engagement and help deliver plot hooks and light worldbuilding. This takes the form of event-based oneshots and lighthearted, energetic, pulp adventure novel fun. Additionally, more intense arcs continue in the background on a fairly consistent basis with major events taking place biweekly--these are the backbone of the closeted, quiet goal of attainment and containment of dangerous and unpredictable artifacts.
Quests
RELIC operates on a Quest System, with 3 primary forms of content. Main Quests are time-limited quests which advance the overarching RELIC narrative, and are explicitly DM’d by Officers. Sidequests are quests which may or may not have a deadline, and are often able to be DM’d by anyone, with any style you prefer--Officers ask for logs and results of these events, and will communicate with a DM what to expect. Sidequests may be just for fun, or they may open up new and previously unforeseen routes for the MSQ to take! Lastly, we have Character Quests which are our form of user-generated content! Often DM’d by the creator, unless specifically requested, these events are any character-centric or user-submitted quest or quest chain and open up involvement from our membership beyond simply running or participating in events we put out. Attached are examples of each!
Main Quest
Tumblr media
Sidequest
Tumblr media
Character Quest
Tumblr media
New quests are generally thrown up weekly or as-completed, so there’s almost always something to do! Roles Within the Company Roles are largely fluid and little more than a way of distinguishing particular dynamics pertinent to museum life and providing flavor to RP. There is considerable overlap and any member may be active in several roles at once. That being said, we do have several distinct roles which influence the interactions within the company: Curators are responsible for research and identifying goods, and often helm expeditions to retrieve them. They are also responsible with expanding the museum. Curators are expected to turn a private room into a personal exhibit hall based around their own theme and interests. Current exhibits will be listed on the company tumblr (here!). They are the closest thing to a supervisory role within the company, and are always fully briefed on the full motives of the company.  Reclaimers are the muscle of the company, handling artifact retrieval, acquisitions jobs, and wetwork. Conservators are responsible for restoring and maintaining collections, as well as the occasional recreation of a device or artifact. They’re the tinkerers of the company.
Custodians are responsible for handling museum affairs, interacting with the public, and helping with social events. This is largely suited for alts, or as a secondary role, considering the casual nature of this position.
The Mentees are often younger characters, accepted on a provisional basis, who do safer, low-risk jobs at the museum while acquiring valuable experience. They may be wards, interns, or aspiring heroes who don’t quite have the age or experience for the fields of glory. This role was designed to facilitate the youth of RELIC. Most of these are alts, and it is not recommended you apply as your main.
Who We Want
We’re looking for members who are active in game, as well as proactive in pitching story ideas, arcs, and events, in a collaborative effort. Participation in events, as well as producing ideas for events oneself is strongly encouraged. If you’re unfamiliar with running events, we’re happy to help you! Any character with a history in mercenary work or adventuring, scholarly pursuits, or craftsmanship with any interest in museum/acquisition work or containment and protection of highly volatile artifacts is a good fit for the company. We are predominantly good-aligned, though we veer into neutral territory frequently--most of our membership, if placed on an alignment spectrum, are Chaotic Neutral, Neutral Good, and Chaotic Good. Outright evil characters are discouraged, though exceptions can be made if they’re played exceptionally well and add to the overall narrative experience. We try to keep our membership small and tight-knit, but active. Please be understanding of this atmosphere. However, you are not required to be in the Free Company to be a part of our events, and if you are already in another Company you are welcome to be an affiliate and spend time in our discord and linkshell!
