cheek pieces made!!! i cant wait to carve these into shape. i already cut the inner side so they curve around my head, AND i was very happy to see that even with the full width (+8cm on each side, will most likely get noticably smaller after carving) its still a lot slimmer than my shoulders so the head should be a good size.

on that note, im looking forward a lot to how sal is going to end up, considering she seems to have mostly given up the whole revenge thing? she was already not that hot on it early second book, and after the encounter with darrish the only thing left that drives her seems to be getting liette somewhere safe (not easy when youre being hunted by two different armies). as long as neither of them dies, because the other WILL implode in that case.

calling the freemakers an "organization" seems a bit much tbh, considering theyre a loosely affiliated group of mad scientists who rarely even collaborate. and "blowing up someones tomb to collect a debt he owed" sounds a lot like another group that appears in the story 🤔 who are actually organized and known for their ruthlessness and fixation on always going through with the deals they make 🤔

its also important to note that the language has extreme hierarchical structures built in. using a lower level of formality in the wrong situation can definitely get you stabbed in this setting (and dokja is very brazen about doing this to all sorts of people he doesnt respect no matter how powerful, which i find hilarious). we also have "you (derogatory)", which he uses on junghyeok too. theres also quite a difference between using full name and first name only, its possible dokja avoids going too intimate (with people he respects) to keep some distance. hes very cagey about revealing things about himself after all. first name-ssi might actually be more intimate than using full name though im not 100% on that rn.

-a/-ya is common for addressing someone who has much lower status than you (this is only used when talking directly to someone!), especially kids. affectionate yes, but also makes very clear the other is not your equal. iirc this is never used for jiyhe (at least as far as ive gotten), i think she would actually stab dokja if he tried this. when talking to someone with similar status, this can come off as extremely condescending ("junghyeok-a" is very much both affectionate and condescending)

(not sure about -i tbh, it seems like a cutesy way to talk about kids from what i can tell. never a direct address)

there are some funny bits where people start out informal and get startled into using formal language, a scene that comes to mind rn is a bit during the flag game where dokja and co encounter some prophets who go "who the fuck are you supposed to be?" (informal, dismissive and aggressive) and when dokja mentions theyre from chungmuro they assume hes junghyeok and immediately switch to very polite-formal language to try and suck up to him.

About the names: So we're up to chapter 31 in the ReTL. Some things to note:

Kim Dokja refers to all the adults by full name. Almost insists on it, even when it would be easier (and match the flow of the others) to use just the first names.

Kim Dokja and the others all call Gilyoung by his first name. They frequently add on -ah or -ie (former when spoken to LGY, the latter when talking about him). They only occasionally use his full name in ways you would expect (Like when KDJ is calling out to him frantically to get his attention).

Jung Heewon takes a moment, but she starts quickly going back and forth between full and first names with everyone before dropping the last names entirely like a day later. Expected of her personality once she's comfy.

Lee Hyunsung drops last names pretty quickly too, but it comes off like… textbook "talking with people my age", in a way? It's casual, but it almost feels like he did that at just the appropriate time lol. (That's just the vibe I got. Not saying that's how it is. He's easily casual with people he's friendly with)

Yoo Sangah calls him Dokja-ssi from pretty much the jump and never swaps back. The exception was when she was using his last name to get his attention. Same for the other adults.

Kim Dokja starts calling the adults by their first names in chapter 31, and has so far been consistent with it. We'll have to see if this changes or if it's a permanent thing. Chapter 31, for context, is the first green zone night just after they arrive in Chungmuro and before the Theater Dungeon.

Kim Dokja always calls Yoo Joonghyuk by full name, but he has so far used Joonghyuk (possibly Joonghyuk-ah. The MTL drops stuff, so I'll have to wait for Dan to catch up. But it would match his personality to use -ah whenever he's not using Yoo Joonghyuk's full name) comes up a little more often than I remembered.

Kim Dokja has only shown to call others (who he is not explicitly friendly with) on first name basis when he's trying to match the flow or suck up to them (He notably calls Gong Pildu "Pildu-ssi" when he's trying to convince him to give him a room. Everyone else calls him Pildu-ssi.)

He also calls Han Donghoon by his first name (Donghoon-ah) from what I can tell once he frees him from his hypnosis. It seems to be a trend that Kim Dokja talks to kids in a friendly way. Lee Jihye seems to be the exception (so far. We'll see if that holds up during the time of the Theater Dungeon. Again, waiting to retl that part.)

true pinnacle of reliable public transport today. my bus has been un-cancelled but is going at completely random intervals (or not at all, depending). trains also have massive delays or are not going at all, but at least i managed to catch a near-empty one (that had been standing around doors open for long enough were sharing it with a pigeon)

removed the threads, stupid loop and c code section. then i had to iron out some weird issues, but i have NOT seen a single segfault since then!!! now the next thing i found: when it encounters an error with an id > 13, it tries to reopen the network socket. no matter that there are a LOT of error codes, and as far as i can tell none of these actually mean that the socket has closed??

I've seen what happens when people Get Worse. I've orbited a lot of people who Got Worse (especially online). If you listen to people who Got Worse it's all the same: they don't have consistent, meaningful social support, they've been hurt too many times and they can't open up out of fear that the next betrayal is going to drive the knife right through the artery, they end up spending too much time alone and develop secret languages, meanings, thought cycles completely inscrutable to anyone who has never had to rely on such rituals to survive, they get caught in a cycle of reopening and licking their wounds because the progression of time is so unrewarding and stagnant that the past is basically always the present, and the present is already the future, they become mean, they become strange.

some people might offer to help them but it's rare they ever know where to start, let alone exhibit compassion without grimace. admittedly, even for genuinely compassionate people, it isn't the easiest thing. if the person is someone who is stuck in their ways or doesn't know you, they don't really have a reason to be receptive to your help. "why should I waste my time on someone who is just going to become another memory of heartache? someone who will carelessly hurt and abandon me?" and such. an earnest attempt to help can feel like an attempted assault to them. at the same time, the meaningful interpersonal relationships that these people need will not survive if built on pity or fleeting self-gratifying feelings of "building" someone into your idea of a desirable person.

I don't know where I was going with this, but I always found it hard not to see myself as only a few degrees removed from these people. one or two safety nets separated from being completely trapped. unable to feel safe in not just the world but also my own body. a cosmological dead end. I stay away from habitually engaging in the obvious things can that make trying to change when you're at this point difficult (alcohol, drugs, etc), but if temperance is how you maintain stability in the face of rock bottom, you're basically already there, right? you're there and your body just hasn't caught up. maybe I'm just being dramatic because it's late. hows everypony finding the new deltarune chapters.
