It's a dreary Thursday. Have some kunigiri previews!

I know we talked a lot about Kunigiri adopted Reo after Nagi left.

But let’s take a moment to appreciate how perfectly Kunigami captured the caring parent energy in this scenario.

He knelt down to Reo’s eyes level like when you wanted to talk to a little kid and made them feel like a grown up. Dude literally said ‘Are you alright?’ ‘What’s wrong?’. It seemed like he was genuinely concerned about Reo’s well being. Which was rare in Bluelock. Especially when they were not even friends.

Chigiri also played a perfect role of a dad who meant well but didn’t know how to handle emotional stuff so he redirected Reo’s energy to something else. Like when Reo started to spiral and was clearly thinking about Nagi as a person and not about soccer, Chigiri would abruptly said something like ‘Yep! That’s good, Bud. Save that energy for the match!’ Or he would just let Kunigami took the lead and chimed in.

And the way they looked at each other with parental telepathy before hyping Reo up when Reo asked why would they even wanted him was just so cute and heartbreaking. The way Reo perked up at their praises that was clearly just them trying cheer him up (I knew they actually meant what they said, but the way they delivered the praises was clearly to make Reo felt better about himself) was so adorable and sad.

Also, this.

Like, in Bluelock, you can see people practicing all night all the time. There was no reason for them to get worried when Reo didn’t come back to bed. But they knew the fragile emotional stage Reo was in, so they went to check on him like a good parent.

They way the manga/anime portrayed Kunigiri to have that domestic, old married couple vibe made the adoption made even more sense.

I can look at these two and be like, yep, they are definitely in that stage of their journey together to add a new member to their family if they choose to do so.

Shower thoughts be like: what happened to Kunigami in the Wild card room to change his personality so drastically? in this essay i will-

[major manga spoilers ahead]

Okay, Kunigami is slightly trickier for me, so feel free to add your opinions.

When we were first introduced to Kunigami, he was someone with an upright image, someone who also hungers to score goals too, yes, but he'd rather do it "the right way", no tricks involved.

He was also someone who looked after his teammates in his own ways, like when he scored thanks to Isagi and repaid him with food bought with the Blue Lock points he earned from the goal.

But the Wild Card room took his personality and sharpened his hunger for goals and threw the other softer aspects of his personality away.

(it gave me serious whiplash, to be honest)

His expression itself here also shows just how much he has changed from his Team Z days: its colder, more piercing and...entirely different from the "old" Kunigami.

But what made him change so drastically?

Was it the same thing that Isagi realised? That him advancing in Blue Lock essentially means that he has to eliminate other players? crush their hopes and dreams?

I mean, ultimately Isagi learnt how to thrive off defeating others, but it seems to have affected Kunigami differently.

Maybe having to crush the others (in the Wild Card room) in order to climb up and survive drastically warped some part of him, made him realise that his way of doing things "fair and square" won't help him get far in Blue Lock. But that isn't anything different from what he was doing during the First selection arc. Is it the pressure of having to single-handedly defeat the others?

Or was the change in his personality to perfectly emulate Noel Noa? in order to fit into the Bastard Munchen's logical and rational team dynamic? to better understand Noel Noa's playstyle?

Because. It doesn't seem as if Kunigami is meshing well with Bastard Munchen, is it?

At this point, we still don't really know what role he's supposed to play, other than being a copy of Noel Noa, and supposedly to 'guide' Isagi in these matches.

I'm really hoping that we'll get to see him play a bigger role in the current arc, and hopefully see more of this new Kunigami fleshed out, because he feels quite flat as a character to me now.

Also, slight deviation, but: in my opinion, if Kunigami had survived up till now, he would have chosen Manshine City as well. I see Chigiri and Kunigami as pretty similar players in the sense that both Chigiri and his playstyles both rely on their physique: Chigiri with his speed and Kunigami with his strength.

(which is also probably why they get along well and work together well, but thats another essay for another day.)

tl;dr props to Kunigami for surviving the wild card room, but did it really produce the best results? what with Kunigami's former personality being crushed by his current cold and harsh exterior, and he doesn't seem to be meshing well with the Bastard Munchen team either.

Chigiri is:

The beauty of Blue Lock. His only competition is Aryu

Even then, who is it with the nickname “princess” hmm?

Unaware of his own beauty / doesn’t even have to try, he just is that beautiful

A bookworm. His favourite hobby is reading novels

Generally quite elegant in his movements and demeanour

Was demeaned by his peers outside of Blue Lock for not being the way they expected him to be

Meanwhile Kunigami is:

“Transformed” from a ‘naive’ boy into a ‘monster’ due to a choice he made

Acts selfish and cruel, not caring for others including his own teammates (who are stand-ins for the servants here)

Is prone to lashing out, being violent and not listening to others

Has become jaded and traumatised by his situation

Physically very well built, strong and overpowering

Disliked by everyone

Is this intentional. Idk, probably not. I still choose to see the parallels and no one can stop me. I just wish it was intentional so we could’ve had more interactions during the MC match — allusions to the “Belle saves the beast” narrative. Instead, we got allusions to a reversed Sleeping Beauty narrative (“I’ll wake you up” — Chigiri) and then nothing followed through :(
