FROM MY BAY KITCHEN Rene Astudillo
6K posts
Memories of my homeland, travels and more . . . seen through the confines of the kitchen and in the context of food. I learned most of my cooking from my late mother, just watching her in the kitchen. She had no recipe books or cheat sheets, just the skill and knowledge probably passed on from my grandmother and my grandmother’s mother. I honestly believe that the best dishes are probably the ones that are passed on by word of mouth and practice, perfected not by measuring cups or kitchen timers, but by intuition and the pouring of one’s heart into the cooking.

Photo Of The Week: Marcos Listens In To Trump And Stubb Conversation
Philippine President Bongbong Marcos hates fake news, so he intently listens in to a conversation between Donald Trump and Finland’s Alexander Stubb. We’ll have to wait for the next press briefing of Atty. Claire Castro to find out what transpired in that conversation.

Pope Francis’ First Miracle?
In what the Vatican is already hailing as The Miracle of the Very Stable Genius, Pope Francis has achieved the impossible: he got Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky to sit down for a one-on-one chat without insults, tweets, or subpoenas flying. Eyewitnesses say the meeting started awkwardly, with Trump offering Zelensky a “beautiful, perfect” cheeseburger and Zelensky replying by googling “how…

Sara Duterte: Resignation or Usurpation? (video)
(Melchor Vergara contributed to this report) In a stunning display of Wala Akong Pake Energy, Sara Duterte stripped the Office of the Vice President seal off her podium like it was an annoying price tag on a designer bag she didn’t even want. “Replace it with the Office of the President seal!” she declared, as if changing job titles were as easy as updating your LinkedIn profile. Spectators…

Imee Marcos Rebrands: From “Marcos Forever” to “Maybe Duterte?”
In a plot twist worthy of a teleserye, Senator Imee Marcos—once the ride-or-die of her father’s memory—has apparently ghosted the Marcos legacy faster than you can say “Golden Years.” After publicly side-eyeing her own brother President Bongbong, Imee seems to be cozying up to VP Sara Duterte like it’s 2028 campaign season already. Political analysts are baffled, but netizens aren’t: “Imee…

P20/Kilo Rice And P20/Can Of Spam!
Ah, the classic tale of giving a finger and losing your whole arm—Filipino edition! After years of chanting “P20 rice or we riot,” critics are now whining that it looks like animal feed. Hello? That’s rice, not imported jasmine-scented unicorn grains. Our farmers worked their calloused hands to the bone, and now you’re calling their harvest pig chow? Manners, please! And just when we thought it…

The Vatican Conclave Not A Beauty Pageant.
Filipinos take beauty pageants so seriously, you’d think Miss Universe was a national emergency. Every time a Pinay struts in evening gown, the entire archipelago pauses like it’s the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight all over again. Pageant fan votes? Dominated by Pinoys with ten Gmail accounts each. But now, things have taken a divine twist. With Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle rumored as a papabile, the…

Camille, Namamangka Sa Dalawang Dagat?
Nagtataka…

Alexa, New Queen Of Fake News?
At exactly 4:01 a.m. on April 22, 2025, millions of groggy Filipinos were wide awake, clutching emergency kits and spam, thanks to Alexa—Amazon’s beloved voice assistant turned doomsday prophet. Earlier, Alexa had boldly predicted a powerful 8.2 magnitude earthquake would rock the Philippines, complete with a countdown, an ominous playlist (“Shake It Off” included), and reminders to “duck,…

Holy Week 2025 In Baguio: No Longer The Summer Capital?
This Holy Week, Baguio braced for the annual tourist invasion—130,000 strong, armed with selfie sticks and strawberry taho cravings. The city prepared for gridlocks, snaking queues, and the great SM Mall stampede. But alas, Baguio waited… and waited. Streets were so empty, even the pine trees looked confused. Famous eateries had no lines—waiters stared out windows like forlorn lovers. PUJ drivers…

Trust Survey: Let’s Poll The Pollsters!
Poll ratings nowadays are like online shopping reviews—glowing, scathing, or just plain fake. One poll says Candidate A is leading by a mile; another says Candidate B is winning by divine intervention. Somewhere out there, Candidate C is still looking for their name on the list. The results are as diverse as the number of polling firms, which now outnumber street food stalls. It’s confusing,…
