updated ver: aoyama nakazke
How long has it been since I posted about an OC, let alone one that isn't from my bag of wrestling characters? A couple of years now?
Well, never mind all that. I've been in a strong writing mood as of late (it's more or less just me trying to get back into the hobby again while my schedule is freer than it was a month or so ago) and I thought I'd put down an updated and cleaner version of one of my older OCs; Aoyama Nakazke. The older post for him can be found here, if you have some sort of interest in checking that out.
He used to be solely a Danganronpa OC (and the context of his backstory is still minorly reliant on Hope's Peak being a thing), but I've admittedly fallen out of that genre a little bit as of late (not completely mind you, why else would the sage is still the entire theme of my blog?), so now he's more or less just a general OC that can be put in just about any verse.
Well, anyways. The lad's under the cut, so go check it out if you're interested.

Name: Aoyama Nakazke
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Height: 5'2" / 158cm
Weight: 128lbs / 58kg
Birthday: May 8 (I forgot why I gave him this birthday, but it has something significant to do with basketball)
Talent: Street Baller
Likes: Cola bottles / most kinds of street food - Cats - Mikel Jordin (???) - Having his hair stroked (generally by people he likes)
Dislikes: Strong fires - Authority figures - Tacky clothing - Getting shoved/slapped/any form of physical disrespect
Appearance:
Aoyama is a rather short boy with a youthful face; making it easy to mistake him to be younger than he actually is. He has light brown eyes and fair white skin, and styles his dark gray hair into short upswept spikes, with two pigtails tied together with black ribbons. When they’re let down, his hair reaches all the way to his shoulders, though he rarely ever does this outside of his own home or in the middle of a shower. (Small tidbit: he chose the dark color for the ribbons to have them blend in with his hair as much as possible)
Aoyama’s attires for everyday use consists of a long and baggy sleeved, black hoodie jacket that has a puffy interior within it, made to maximize the amount of comfort he can feel. Underneath the hoodie is a maroon shirt patterned with black vertical stripes, with the same design being applied to his socks. His shorts have a similar color scheme, with predominant maroon and black accents around the waist area and the edges of the cloth, and maroon sneakers that are topped with white shoelaces. This is usually his outfit while at his home, or if he plans on playing basketball within the day.
If he’s out and about, he makes the slightest bit of effort to change it up; although not by much, as he tries not to stand out among a crowd and would only really put in this ‘effort’ for someone he likes. This alternative outfit has Aoyama don a crimson and black undershirt with a silver leather jacket, and black pants kept in place with a belt. Both the jacket and his pants have plenty of pockets for him to store items; and more importantly - his hands. He really likes idling with his hands in pockets somewhere.
He also changes his footwear a little, now a simple pair of pure crimson socks and black sneakers with red undertones and laces. Aside from his clothes, he’ll style his hair to make sure his three antennas don’t just pop out, thinking that they look ‘stupid’.
Underneath his clothes is a rather muscly and well-toned build, as expected of someone from his area being a street basketball player and all. There are also a few, not so distinct scars around his torso and back - all a product of his childhood.
Personality:
Raised in the streets by himself and his talent, Aoyama is a stubborn and humble boy who seeks to get by in life as comfortably as he can. He's generally quiet off the court due to not wanting to really associate with anyone other than those he teams up with, and from a bit of deep insecurity that he isn't really worth more than what his talent can get him.
His thoughts tend to be a little sarcastic and blunt, sometimes seeping out of his lips and getting blurted out. Aoyama generally tries to avoid anything that’ll start a confrontation though - especially if it’s getting him involved in one.
He's unpretentious and practically his own biggest hater, though he doesn't take well to disrespect, especially physical ones, and it’s likely he’ll instinctively throw a fist right at the source if he gets shoved, pushed around, etc. He's a little clueless when it comes to things like world knowledge and educational subjects, with his lifestyle while growing up playing a major part in that.
Aoyama is incredibly loyal to those who he considers a friend and resents the idea of turning his back on someone; but his nature and roots as a street kid make it rather unavoidable for him to get in trouble from time to time, which has had him have to solve issues across different groups
at least, in the ways that he best can.
Backstory:
To say that Aoyama hated his childhood would be an understatement; but even so, he knows most of it came to be because he would rather walk through true hell than have to live in a fake heaven with demons.
Aoyama was an accident child by a shaky and collapsing couple in a rural farm close to the edge of Kushiro (an average town/city just north of Hokkaido) - both parents were not only poor but had also began to fall out of love for one another, sending the Nakazkes into a spiraling doom of debt and unwanted parental responsibility. Not having the means nor the funds to abort the child, they gave birth to him and left Aoyama to be raised by his grandparents, who would both shortly pass just before he turned 3 - the year he first started to remember and be conscious of his surroundings.
Taking Aoyama back with them to their house, his parents began to take their frustrations and misery of their situation out on him, blaming him for the fact that they keep spending money because of him. Whenever he was at school, he didn’t have many friends; and his short stature and endearingly innocent face as a kid made him an easy target for bullies. Yet whenever he would fight back, he’d get punished as if he started the trouble itself. It didn’t help that he could never focus on school too - and his grades were ‘passable’ at best.
Aoyama’s parents would constantly shelter him and refuse to ever let him out of the house, stopping him from eating too much, reasoning that if he gets full, he’ll become sleepy - and that if he became sleepy, he wouldn’t be able to study. After some point, Aoyama’s parents were no longer able to keep affording his tuition, which left his basic education level around merely the 4th grade. It wasn’t until he later got into Hope’s Peak that he was able to somewhat catch up.
Scars left on him by the whips and belts they’d strike him with, cold and heartless words that made him question why he was even alive, and constant hate that boiled and bubbled until he couldn’t take it anymore. After getting splashed with hot water by his father after he was caught trying to go outside and berating him, telling him that he’s wasting his life by trying to make it out of the house and that he’s only going to hurt himself like the idiot he is. Aoyama yells at the both of them, screaming and asking why they’re so mad at him when he never asked to be born, and that they’re saying that he’s wasting ‘his’ life

When ‘his’ life was never his to begin with, because they’ve been dictating everything he’s been doing since the beginning, and that he hates it here, saying that he wishes he could just leave like they clearly want him to. His mother steps up, slaps him in the face and pulls him by the hair, dragging him back to their house. She tells him if he hates his life here so much, then why doesn’t he pick all his stuff up and leave? Aoyama’s eyes narrow for a second, but he grits his teeth, clenches his fists and storms off to pick up his own stuff. Both of his parents look shocked at the fact that Aoyama seemed absolutely on-board with the idea, but
if he wanted to leave their miserable life, when they knew he’d come crying back later on anyways
 they’ll amuse him, they thought.
He never came back. He took a basketball, a stock of his clothes, the very little savings he had, and most importantly
what little money the Nakazke family had left and took it all for himself from his parents’ room and hid it away in a wallet he hid away between his shorts. And Aoyama barged out the door. Then he ran. And ran. And ran. And he just kept running, refusing to ever look back. If he felt thirsty or hungry, he’d buy a drink and a small snack to eat along the way. If he felt sleepy, he’d rest in an alley or a sidewalk under the night sky, using his bag as a makeshift pillow. And if he ever thought he’d want to go back home, he’ll kick himself in the foot and continue to run.
Aoyama didn’t know where he’d go. He doesn’t even know what his old house’s address was; and what side of the country he’d ended up in by then. But as long as it was far away, by himself, he was okay. And if he ever has to make money again so he can keep surviving long enough to prove those two nutcases wrong
he’ll pick up his ball, dribble it and gamble everything he has against another kid. It doesn’t matter if he gets pushed. It doesn’t matter if he gets hurt.
If someone shoves him, he’ll be able to shove them back. If someone tries to trick him, he won’t just look down and let it go. He’ll live. If only to spite them. If only so he never has to go back to them. And there were bumps, losses, moments of thievery and rumbling into street fights that he’d get into along the way. But he kept getting better and better, stronger and tougher, faster and sneakier. His height became a deceit for what was both a natural and honed gift for street basketball - skillful, agile, and a menace on the court that tore through enemy’s defenses and was speedy to the point that getting past him while he was guarding you felt infuriatingly impossible. Building himself from the bottom up, he was able to get scouted for local teams, make a proper wage for himself, a name was created, and soon enough on his phone, a call from prestige he could only peek through from a window had finally reached him.
Extras:
I got asked this a while back on a Discord server, and I thought I'd put it here too - Aoyama isn't exactly interested in romance (ball is life 💯). While he wouldn't say no to having a partner regardless of their identity, he grew up thinking that it's extremely corny and has a bit of a childish perspective, still half-convinced that cooties actually exist. But half the reason for that is because he's pretty socially inept and has trouble with showing and receiving affection outside of the one thing he's good at. The other half is because he doesn't even know what kind of people he's into and is still figuring things out, though he might have a bit of internalized homophobia having grown up in a somewhat conservative environment. It'd just take some convincing.
Aside from the likes listed above, Aoyama's into trap, hip-hop, and video game music. He's also more likely to hang around people that are rebellious and wild, even if he himself isn't a very loud and proud guy. Maybe it's just him wishing he'd have half the confidence they did. Oh, and he's a pretty frugal guy, tending to take the cheapest and most bang-for-your-buck options at almost anything he goes to.
"Is there anything outlandish he might have an interest in?" - Another question I answered on a server I used to be in. There might be one, actually! I gave it some thought, and I think he has a slight repressed fascination in cosplay! While he himself would never want to wear flashy clothing out in the open, thinking that it'd look ridiculous and cringey; ironically enough, he'd be open to trying it on by himself and pretending to be another person! That... stems from a bit of his insecurity about his own image (physically and mentally), but that is one thing someone who's close with him wouldn't expect for him to be drawn to. He'd probably isolate himself in embarrassment if you ever find out though, so maybe it's best you never find out about that.

i dunno if i'm in the minority here (prooobably not?) but i'm not a big fan of fic tags that essentially spoil the outcome of the story, like 'happy ending' or 'sad ending', or the slightly more complex 'angst with a happy ending'
i understand the comfort in knowing if things will turn out good or not, because seeing something upsetting can definitely leave you with a sour mood after reading a really good fic that just sorta shits the bed at the end.
but i think most of the fun when it comes to angsty/long, several chapter stories is not knowing if things will turn out okay. i fucking hope they do, god i want them to be happy but what if they're not. oh god. oh no.
i live for that kind of tensity, y'know?

EO5-Styled intros for the stratums from EO1 and EO2!
I finished playing EO5 a while back, and one of the things I really liked about the game were the short narrated sequences that played when you reached a stratum for the first time. The voice actress kills the role, and just the music slowly kicking in as she introduces just what you're about to get yourself into - aaahh, it's so good.
To help practice a bit of my description writing when it comes to locations and short tidbits of lore, I decided to try my hand at doing my own renditions of these sequences for the EO1 and 2 stratums! Hopefully they look alright, eheh.
Spoilers under the cut!
EO1
Every adventurer has a dream: whether it be for glory, for riches, for knowledge, or for purpose. Without fail, all of them flock to this mighty tree.
Regardless of the purity in their heart, the first step into these vast greenlands is filled with ambition.
That very same ambition is what has led to the end of so many. And yet for you, it may just be the start

The legendary story born from hope blossomed here.
The first stratum, Emerald Grove
Descending down the stairs, a new layer of the labyrinth welcomes you.
Darker than the last, the tropical wilderness buzzes your ear with the sounds of trickling water, and cries of a new set of beasts.
Those who basked in their success of survival of the basics; learned far too late

 That here, nature reigns supreme.
The second stratum, Primitive Jungle
Conquering the lord of the jungle, a mesmerizing sight shines against your eyes.
A moist scent wafting in the air, with a cobalt hue that makes one forget you’re still within a forest.
A queen of the insects lies in wait here, and below even her grasp is a mystery only a handful have seen, yet one question continues to prod.
Has that secret been forgotten by age, or has it grown into something more?
The third stratum, Azure Rainforest
Layer after layer of blooming life, comes to a harsh, arid halt upon this new arrival.
These wastelands filled with long stretches of beige and grains scraping against skin, is the very home of an ancient race.
They speak of a century-old pact, fully ready to defend their turf. To hide what’s below, and to see what’s below.
Wills even in the face of death are about to be tested here.
The fourth stratum, Sandy Barrens
Only the cursed king on his throne in the abyss remembers that golden age.
A world overwhelmed by verdure and promises of revival. A time and tragedy that only one man can tell the true story of.
Structures and mechanisms that you have never seen the likes of, with memories so distant, but so near all the same.
The mysteries that have been kept under for a millenia, it is your destiny to unravel them and see for your own - the secrets of Yggdrasil.
The fifth stratum, Lost Shinjuku
Below even the origin of creation is a place past the naked eye.
A system of organs solely out of the blood dripping from stratas above, drenching the pulsing and veiny walls with a sickening red.
Screams and wails of agony from a creature tortured by its purpose, engulfing itself in this cavern to take its revenge on trespassers that were never meant to reach here.
For descending to the roots of this labyrinth, its very core will stop at nothing to engrave you into it.
The sixth stratum, Claret Hollows
EO2
The second saga of a legend already born, or the first for the arisal of new ones.
Whoever the author may be, this story begins all the same, with an invitation from a new land to ascend to heights yet to be reached.
These grassy woods that surround the bottom of the mighty tree

Mark the intro for an adventure unlike any before.
The first stratum, Ancient Forest
Pushing through the daunting beginning trials, an opening paves way into a new flavor of woods.
These orange lands filled with prickly tails and segwaying paths; they provoke the explorers with a dilemma.
Will you grit your teeth through thorns for instant gratification, or will you dance with the roars of beasts seemingly undentable?
Be decisive, lest you go a route that leads to a pitiful end.
The second stratum, Auburn Thicket
Biting through fragile flesh, as soon as getting past the heat of the thicket.
Grazing against the adventurers, a stinging test from the polar opposite on the journey up north.
This icy surface, disrupting the pursuit towards the top, has spelled the end of many tales thought to be on the road of destiny.
Pass by these freezing storms, and at the peak awaits a tragedy long foretold; yet this is only one of his many, many failings.
The third stratum, Frozen Grounds
Lagaard knew not what was past those snowy acres, until they arrived; and now - they continue to soar.
Like the monsters and curious souls that reside here, these pink, rosy blossoms mark the start of heights never been reached.
Through echoes heard upward, each footstep through this cherry territory serenades the adventurers.
Keep on climbing, recite a long lost grail, and you’ll be one step closer to the heavens. But tread carefully - the war ahead may overwhelm even those chosen by fate.
The fourth stratum, Petal Bridge
The world was once overtaken by Earth itself. Those fortunate enough, built a stronghold to survive.
Centuries passed. And eventually, not even the stronghold could hold its strength.
The one constant
 was him.
Renewing it to his liking, a phenomenal palace not even fairy tales could mold. A castle glistening with gold, proudly idling above the skies where no one could reach him. No matter how long it takes. No matter how many will be lost.
Despite all the years, he’s always kept one promise burned into his mind.
“Humanity must survive.”
The fifth stratum, Heavenly Keep
Eternity - a word no mortal could understand the true weight of.
An eternity of mistakes. An eternity of lives lost from obsession.
An eternity of abominations created by his hand. Yet not one was worse than his first.
Over his created heaven, was a forest so eden, so seemingly tranquil; yet nothing was more dangerous. It’s a sanctuary with just a singular purpose.
A forsaken prison, to house his darkest criminal.
The sixth stratum, Forbidden Wood

post-udg nagisa's trust issues must be crazy though cause like when your only source of happiness are words of affirmation, being told "wow! great job, nagisa! you're so smart!" and the person/source you relied on for those the most destroys your whole world and makes you question if anybody even liked you in the first place
taking into consideration all the other 'betrayals' and how often he's been hurt in his life, then adding the statement above to a very confused and scared 12 to 14 something year old kid, and it's just
how do you even bounce back from that? how does nagisa ever stop feeling and wondering if he's just being lied to again from that point on?

I can see why Haji may be popular because he is an interesting character, plays his role in the story well, and has a cool design.
Ehhhh.
No matter where you ask, Haiji's really not a popular character. I don't even really dislike the guy all that much, just kind of indifferent towards him (he does have a very cool design though and is voiced by Matt Mercer, that's like 2 out of 5 stars already).
Even if you put aside that one line/trait of his, he's still just not the most remarkable character out there. Self-admitted coward, like a mole in attitude, and just generally kind of an ass.
Go to any form of media, and you'll find that more people are interested in characters that have heinous lists of felonies against them but are well-liked because they're just more interested and have a lot more likeable traits. (Junko, Monaca, Nagisa, Korekiyo, just for the DR side)
If you're just a plain ol' dick with some morally questionable tastes and ideals that wants to wipe out an entire city of its children, then yeah, you're not setting yourself up to be popular. Might've been in another universe, just not this one.

Idk if Nagisa will be the streamers favorite, but he would definitely be up there, I think Jataro might he his favorite because "he is a lil weirdo (affectionate)".
I'll keep you updated tho lol
Putting my entire bank account on Nagisa being #1 by the end of Chapter 4, call it all now

THE POLL IS SO FUNNY TO ME BC MASARU DAIMON IS MY FAVORITE UDG CHARACTER AND FAVE DR CHARACTER IN GENERAL. HE ISNT EVEN ON THERE DAWG....I do think Nagisa deserves it more tho. I love my boy Masaru but Nagisa is 100% more interesting of a character. I wish Spike would run the poll in the ENG fanbase
Sorry mate, but Nagisa's competition when it comes to the other guys in UDG are like
The two other Warriors who have 1 chapter's worth of screentime, and the other having like 1/4 of a chapter on his end (Masaru)
Innocent young man with 30 seconds worth of voice lines
Cool dad
Sex offender
Not to mention the gap from Monaca in 3rd and Nagisa in 4th is *massive*, even just from a fanart perspective JPN pumps out so much more with the top 3 + Toko while the rest are almost nonexistent, lmfao.
Masaru's a cool guy, he's a solid number 3 in my favorite WoH list and I feel bad that he was doomed from the start because the narrative demanded it, so his fans do have it rougher than me.
That's just the life of falling in love with the unpopular characters though, ahahah. You just gotta watch as all the bigger ones get content catered to them. That's why blogs like mine exist, anyways. To make the content that the devs won't hand us.

I was having a good day until I got reminded that Nagisa placed 4th in the Japanese UDG popularity poll (behind #1 Kotoko, #2 Komaru, and #3 Monaca) and now I'm kicking the air
Tumblr media
Getting punished by a fandom because you highlight all the flaws with your country's obsession with golden children and placing heavy burdens/unsustainable workload from a young age to even when they get older is CRAZY
At least he's the number 1 male character in UDG??? Not like he has much competition though, no offense.

Idk, I don't think I sent you another ask like that?
Any way he just met Toko and has already decided that he is gonna adopt the warriors of hope lol
Seriously? Genuinely feel like I've gotten it before.
Well, I hope they enjoy UDG more than other streamers do, because a lot of people understandably don't really like that game (understandably tbf, there's a lot to nitpick there), but seeing this, I think they'll be fine. My only prayer is that they manage to get through Chapter 3, and Nagisa ends up as their favorite WoH.

When Ennui won, he was so enthused his eyebrows twitched. From the blank stare Crimson was giving him, Ennui could tell she had definitely seen that gross display of emotions. It was embarrassing, but he couldn’t help it. Crimson brought out a very emotional side of him.
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH DHUDJDJD
Thank you so much for mentioning me here, it's a very pleasant feeling to be pinged just to know that there's a work that's suggested for me to read, heheh.
You didn't have to put that disclaimer at the start, because anyone who knows the Goths should be reading any stories centered around them in that monotone, dull voice that we know them for; and this one was no exception.
For being such... simple characters (is that even the right term? because they feel a lot more like two-layered characters than one-layered characters, if I'm even making sense here), if I had to put the Goths one way, I think you really managed to capture them well here, from their deadpan humor to that unique charm they have of just having such a strange yet strong understanding of each other. I let out a few giggles reading the entire excerpt.
Oh, and by the way, I absolutely agree; the Goths are 100% the best pair in TDI, genuinely don't think there's another one in there that charms and gets me rooting for them like they do. Although, since we're on the topic of the show already, I will say I'm also not a super big fan of the show, but I guess that's a product of me having outgrown it. ^^ I still recall Cody and Leshawna being my favorites when I was just a little guy though.
Thank you again for mentioning me here! It's always nice to take a break from the academic stresses or other responsibilities in life, and just chat about things I like with people I like.
Star In A Dark Sky (TDRR Crimsennui Fic)
Tumblr media
When a haunted house fails to live up to Ennui and Crimson's expectations, it seems their date night might be ruined, but a game of ring toss might just save the day.
Crimsennui Slice of Life and (Fluffy?) Goths In Love.
Rated G. No warnings only fluff.
A/N: This fic was a gift for @randomsprinkles who has been insisting I post it for the world too, so I finally conceded put it up on AO3. I honestly wasn't planning on cross-posting to Tumblr, but this is for you @repo-net (I hope you enjoy it!)
Also highly recommend checking out the song "Star In A Dark Sky" by BATZZ in the Belfry (Spotify link; YouTube Link) which inspired this fic and provided its title. It's one of the most goth love songs of all time (in my opinion) and definitely makes me think of this pairing.
This story is meant to be read in their monotone, emotionless delivery and shouldn't be taken too seriously. That said, I hope I managed to give this amazing ship some well-deserved fluff.
Link to the fic on AO3 and full fic text below the cut. Thank you so much for reading! đŸ–€
“That was a let down.” Even though Ennui’s voice was monotone like usual, he saw the way Crimson was blinking at him and knew he was getting emotional. It was hard not to feel disappointed. That haunted house had gotten such good reviews, but it wasn’t scary at all. The blood wasn’t even realistic, and the supposed jump scares were pathetic. The actor playing the deranged chainsaw killer actually screamed when he turned to find Crimson, allegedly, sneaking up behind him, but she was really just standing there.
If Ennui was being honest, it was the best part. Watching Crimson terrify the haunted house employees made a feeling flutter in Ennui’s chest, and he didn’t hate it. Being with her made him feel like a new man—made him feel things, period. It was a strange but not unpleasant sensation. He just wished he could show her a better time than a pathetic, unscary haunted house.
“Sorry. I thought that would be scarier,” he said emotionlessly blinking at her, but when she just blinked back at him, he couldn’t tell if she was disappointed. She was so much less emotional than he was.
“It’s okay,” answered Crimson in her monotone voice. “It’s not your fault that they completely misused their budget and hired bad actors.”
Ennui supposed Crimson had a point. The problem was probably misappropriated funds, unscary actors, and bad writing. Still
“It was the only reason we came here. I would have never brought you to this carnival if I didn’t think we would get scared.” He paused—blinking at the bright, flashing carnival lights. “It’s too bright.”
Crimson nodded in agreement, but she said, “Walking past that petting zoo and watching you get mobbed by cute, fluffy animals was pretty terrifying.”
Ennui’s eyebrow twitched. The emotionless monotony of Crimson’s voice was so comforting. She knew just what to say.
“You would expect a carnival to be a little more creepy, but they really cleaned things up around here,” she continued, and Ennui nodded. He missed the days when the pier was dirty and dingy—filled with old, dilapidated buildings and shady carnies who smelled like cheap box wine and musty cigarettes.
“Things have really gone downhill around here thanks to the new management.”
Crimson nodded in agreement, and they quietly made their way to the exit. “We’re just not carnival people,” she said. “But I guess some of the games are okay.”
The colorful stalls of carnival games Crimson had just mentioned suddenly caught Ennui’s attention. Maybe he could make up for this dud of date by winning her a prize.
“Do you want to stop at one on our way to the exit?”
Crimson blinked. “Okay.”
Ennui and Crimson stopped at one of the carnival stalls for a game of ring toss. When Ennui won, he was so enthused his eyebrows twitched. From the blank stare Crimson was giving him, Ennui could tell she had definitely seen that gross display of emotions. It was embarrassing, but he couldn’t help it. Crimson brought out a very emotional side of him.
After giving them many confused looks, the barker told Ennui he could pick a prize. Unfortunately, most carnival prizes consisted of brightly colored cotton candy and plushies of fluffy animals. Crimson wouldn’t like anything he got her here.
He let out a heavier breath than usual without even thinking to stop himself. He should have thought of that before.
Just as he was about to give up, he saw a ripped and crumbled plushie of a grey bunny hidden behind the others. It was missing an eye, was covered in dirt stains, and one of its arms was hanging on only by threads. It was perfect.
“I’ll take that one,” he said pointing to it. It took the barker several attempts and multiple directions of “Not that one. The one behind it” before he finally picked up the ripped bunny.
“Are you sure?” he asked in confusion. “This one fell off the truck.”
“Even better.” Ennui could feel the corners of his mouth twitch. It was gross, but he didn’t care. He handed the bunny to Crimson who blinked at it.
“It looks like its been through a woodchipper.” After a long pause, she looked up at him and added, “I love it.”
“I love you,” said Ennui. He paused. He hadn’t been meaning to say that even though he had been thinking it for quite some time.
Crimson merely blinked at him. Her blank expression was more unreadable than ever.
His eyebrows twitched again. Had he ruined their evening? “Sorry. I didn’t mean to make things mushy,” he said monotonously, but Crimson cut him off.
“It’s okay.” She met his eyes—her deep, serious, and unemotional gaze sparkling like a star in a dark sky. Looking at her now, Ennui couldn’t help but think that even if sunlight was overrated maybe starlight wasn’t. And when she said, “I love you too” in that beautiful monotone way of hers something fluttered in his chest again.
Yes, Crimson made him feel things. But maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
