hospital food was notoriously disappointing, but that was never more true than at night. the night shift seemed to be shafted in most regards ( though it also offered the reward of better pay and less time with administration ). most days, billie was savvy enough to bring her own food or, if nothing else, at least some leftovers or takeaway from a local restaurant. today, however, she was shit out of luck, and stuck with dining on the most tolerable of sorry meals--grilled cheese and package of jerky.
after finishing her disappointing sandwich, billie ventured back to the drink fountain to hunt for an energy drink. leaning over the counter that held the soda machine, billie caught the eye of the unsuspecting woman who was moments away from making a grievous mistake. “oh, uh--” billie began with a conspiratorial quiet tone as she raised a finger at the woman next to her. “--i wouldn’t get the chicken here if i were you.” eyes motioning towards the featured meal of the day. “it’s either under cooked or over cooked, but either way it’s no good.”

( tate, tommie. )
Oh, how she misses for the bright lights and mysticisms that Hollywood brought her in her youth. Today, she settles for the fluorescent glare that lightens the diner, and the occultish vibrations that fill Crescent Lake. Though she’s only been in her hometown for a few weeks, Tommie is growing restless. There’s a reason she left this town, and every passing day, hour, minute, second, she’s reminded of why. The door chime is what pulls her out of her pity party, as Sapsucker’s receives it’s first customer of the day. Tommie Tate is an actress, so her woes are swept away and replaced with a smile.
“Welcome to Sapsuckers!” she greets, “Counter or booth?”
it’s a different pace in crescent lake, california than in bustling vancouver, bc. billie is glad to be out of the city and crescent lake seems like a place a woman can disappear in--maybe forever. there’s no threat of being recognized and it’s nondescript enough that the sparse instagram posts she has aren’t particularly identifiable. still, the biggest drawback of crescent lake? it’s the food. billie isn’t some snob who runs a foodie blog, nor is she too good for country fried steak or a grandslam at denny’s, but she can’t say she doesn’t miss the late night thai take-out that was so easy to get back home. the diner, however, seems to have some delicious american fare. “counter’s fine.” she tells the blonde with the big smile. after a late night, she’d just itching for a bloody mary and some bacon and eggs. “it’s just me.” she clarifies. “do you guys have drinks this early?” she wasn’t sure when they started serving in california, but most places--it seemed--waited til seven am and hat suited her just fine. most folks had their post-work drinks at seven pm, but night shifters drank in the morning and slept during the day.

( tanaya beatty + cisfemale + she/her ) / who’s that rustling through the trees? oh, it’s just you, WILHELMINA ‘BILLIE’ HARDESTY. i happen to know that you’re a THIRTY year old ER NURSE. while you’re from VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, you’re currently staying in CABIN THIRTEEN. i think that you’re RESILIENT & COMPASSIONATE but my mama says you’re SELF-RIGHTEOUS & ALOOF. is that MOMENT OF TRUTH by GANG STARR currently playing on your spotify? well, turn it down please, you’re disrupting the peace. ( lucia + 31 + she/her + pst )
it’s lucia, back with two more ladies. below the cut, please find some fun facts about billie ! tw suicide mention, medical mention, stalking mention, cancer mention, parent death.
billie is an er nurse from vancouver bc where she grew up with her father after her mother’s suicide. the pair grew up poor, largely due to her father william’s complicated grief, but things started to pick up after billie had a brush with trouble in high school--attempting to make some illegitimate money on top of her two jobs. that was enough to pull her father back into the world and the pair were inseparable as billie worked her way through nursing school.
when she graduated, william gave her a siberian husky puppy, which she affectionately named macready for the movie the thing. macready has been with her ever since--through a long career in er nursing, her father’s cancer diagnosis and eventual death. before leaving on her travel assignment, billie broke her engagement off with a man that she never felt truly understood her, but felt beholden to following his help caring for her father in his final days. the catalyst had been when a patient she’d met only long enough to discharge for a colleague had began stalking her and her fiance had not given her the support she needed.
after that, billie took a travel nursing assignment in the united states and her first contract landed her at the crescent lake general hospital. unwilling to allow herself to pick up a permanent residence, she stays in cabin thirteen and enjoys the comfort of having roommates for the time being.

It’s important that native people are able to play roles that are contemporary, that are not written as Indigenous. We don’t just exist in the past. (x)
