a chalice.

the cup is made to be passed between hands, shaped to be drunk from, well-suited for rituals of all kinds. sharing. sacrifice. when you hand it away, it is never empty; the chalice enters the hand of another and without fail it is brimming full. you feel lightheaded. you hand it to someone else, intending to share, giving them something to drink; you feel suddenly, horribly dizzy. you hand it off again. it’s only when you see the liquid spill from the corner of someone’s mouth that you recognize the blood inside the cup. it’s only when you give it to someone else, yet again, when the faintness rushes over you like a wave, that you realize where the blood is coming from. the people around you are still thirsty. you hand the chalice away again.

a sword.

it’s a beautiful thing, truly. the edge shines, razor-sharp, and the hilt gleams with polish. it looks like something that only you could have created. it looks like a part of you, made metal and melted into a blade. every detail and decoration along the hilt makes it really and truly yours. when you use it, it works just as any sword should, right up until the final hit; and then it fails. the final stroke through the dragon’s neck. the final strike against the chains. the final slice through an enemy. right as you need it, truly, it slips. or it catches against something. or it breaks. it fails you, in the end, and through the disaster, you’re not sure if you’re glad to see the dreadful thing finally shatter or heartbroken that it couldn’t stay.

When Mikey speaks up, it's in such a nonchalant tone that you'd be forgiven for thinking he was going to ask about the weather, or something equally as mundane. His gaze is distant, as if he's seeing something far away that no-one else can, and the speck of blood on his face is the only clue that something's wrong about the picture... But when that gaze snaps back to Koko, the intensity of it is almost enough to drown in, and he's sure neither of them are fooled into thinking there's anything ordinary about this situation.

"When you were still with Inui... did you tell him everything? It must've been hard, to let someone like him go."

"That's not my fault. Food isn't meant to be that hot."

Mikey pouts childishly for a second before laughing it off, his mood changing as easily as the wind. Already, it feels like things are back to how they've always been - and now that that's the case, it's much easier for Mikey to admit how painfully he missed Draken during their fight. In the end, it was Mikey's own fault for not budging... but figuring that out doesn't surprise him nearly as much as it should.

"Let's go to the place we went to last time! You liked it too, didn't you?" he declares, and as far as he's concerned, that's the decision made already. There's still things there he hasn't had before that he's desperate to try... mostly desserts, just as Draken had predicted, but Mikey had plenty of favorites when it comes to food.

As he laughs again, for a moment, everything feels perfect. And so it's completely impulsive when he finds himself saying out of the blue-

"I really missed you, you know."

"Yeah like that's convincing." He scoffs but he's not going to push it much more than that, he's positive he'll find out sooner or later what the other really had in mind. Food, he assumed, was Mikey's driving factor as it always was. Wherever they went he was always expecting to clean up some mess that Mikey or anyone else for that matter made. Somehow his position as number two felt more like a babysitting job more than anything else, not that he would complain enough to have it changed. The hell, how did he get wrapped up in fixing everyone's issues again? It was bad enough that's what he did at home.

Draken's amusement is more than obvious at this point, knowing that Mikey was already difficult on his own but with his influence Mitsuya was sure to buckle into whatever they wanted. The guy wasn't a pushover by any means but he was easy to convince in their positions. The price of being childhood friends, he supposed. It came with as many consequences as it did perks. "You're throwin' the guy to the wolves, there's no way he's pushing back against that." Sorry Mitsuya.

"So what are you feeling? Something sweet?" Personally, he was always in the mood for something spicy but he knew Mikey was particular about what he wanted a lot of the time and Draken wasn't always in the mood to hear his whining. They differed in their tastes for food, most of the time but Draken would eat anything that wasn't god awful. "I know you suck at handling anything mildly spicy."

i feel like writing a thread with adult!naoto as a time leaper/interacting with the teen selves of the tr cast would be really fun, actually........ i kind of want to write that for some reason??

also tempted to add wakasa as a muse for the sole reason that I want more adult muses on this blog. unfortunately there aren't many in the series (with the exception of in the present day, obviously!)
