I would love for people to join me in a community I created. It is called Revolutionary Reads. A place we can discuss books and literature that reflect our current politics and culture or teach us about them. A great place to create a TBR list or maybe even get help for a lit class.
Currently have no one in there but I think the next books I plan on tackling will be Parable of the Sower and The Bell Jar.
Much love,
Reverie

Y'all
Im not on tiktok and never have been, but I downloaded RedNote just to see what is up, and I am witnessing something truly amazing
The Chinese user community is giving the American tiktok refugees an overwhelmingly warm welcome, meanwhile the American users seem to have collectively agreed that not only will they not let the app be taken over with English and they will provide Mandarin subtitles for everything, they are LEARNING MANDARIN. Ive scrolled through so many videos of Americans offering greetings in Mandarin to try to acclimate to the new environment and be respectful, and speakers of both languages are posting lots of tutorials on language basics and internet slang in Mandarin
My God, there is an AMAZING outpouring of curiosity and delight among everyone to learn about each others cultures and daily lives. People are posting videos of landscapes, cities, towns, and natural areas in USA and China, posting recipes and traditional foods, vlogs of everyday life, and reaching out to find people with similar hobbies.
And it's not just young people! There are loads of videos from middle-aged American guys who have come to post about fishing or motorcycles and are now happily chatting with Chinese users sharing the same interests using Google translate
One American guy who was like. in his 60's had a comment on one of his videos that was like "Red Neck?" and he replied "Yes!" and I just about fucking lost it
Also the Chinese users love, and I mean LOVE, Luigi Mangione. He is apparently broadly adored in China. There is SO much fanart and SO many edits.
There are many threads initiating Chinese users to ask questions of American users about the USA, and vice versa, and everyone on both sides is clearing up a lot of misconceptions. Some of the questions I saw a lot from Chinese users were: "Is it true that American parents kick you out of the house as soon as you turn 18" (not often, but sometimes) "Do you all really wear shoes in bed" (NO!!! Apparently a lot of characters in American sitcoms are shown lying in bed with shoes on which I never noticed before!) and "are there really guns everywhere" (yes).
For the most part Chinese content creators seem just overwhelmed by the sudden influx of hundreds of followers that are super enthusiastic about what they're doing. A lot of them have made posts about how initially they thought the uptick in follower count was some kind of error, or that there was some kind of joke or prank, but then they realized the interest and enthusiasm was genuine and now they're welcoming all the newcomers.
I found several posts by Chinese users saying that this felt like a really profound historical moment, where these previously separated worlds are suddenly smashing together and suddenly there is freedom to learn about each other's cultures and connect. One of them said something along the lines of "This is a 21st century Tower of Babel and even though I'm an atheist I hope God lets this tower stand." OUGH MY HEART.
The app itself works a little bit like a video-based version of Pinterest. It's not really my thing so I probably won't be on there long term but it's been amazing to see what's happening.

let's go back to the iPod

when I was 9 I got a used 3rd gen pink nano, still have it 13yrs l8r and it works (only thing being is i can't add music 2 it anymore or mod it)
I took it everywhere and I loved having my own lil music collection and I still use it when I want separation from my phone
while digging thru ipod vids and forums, etc. i found that a good amount of ppl r getting ipods again and just upgrading the hard drive and battery 2 basically make them new with larger storage and battery capacity, there are custom faceplates and backs, bluetooth chips and more, especially for the ipod classic/video (the 5th gen is the easiest 2 mod they say) and if itunes ever stops supporting them you can always mod them with rockbox

you can do this all on a budget too, aftermarket parts can be pretty cheap and you can buy a rather beat-up ipod if you plan on upgrading it anyways
but why do all of this?
imo, it'd be nice for music 2 be on it's own device again, a device I can love, customize and carry everywhere that's not actively draining my mental or focus, it means that I don't have to have my phone or laptop 2 have portable music
it means I can build my own library again, and yes you can do this without an ipod but there's a magic to building and owning your own music collection (this goes for physical copies also!)
I'm very tired of my phone and the internet being attached to my hip at all times, I enjoy taking a bubble bath or something w just my ipod so I'm not just scrolling the whole time, it's always very refreshing
not to mention they r super cute! if I go thru with getting a classic I will make an updated blog about it <3

Activism is not cold-calling.
Activism is not cold-calling, and this is critically important to understand.
I'm seeing a lot of posts on here about 'building bridges' and 'finding community,' and then (extremely valid) response posts saying "BUT HOW??" And I'm going to explain something that can be very counter-intuitive: there is strategy involved in community.
As a longtime volunteer labour organizer, I’ve taken and taught many trainings on the strategy of talking. Something that surprises a lot of people is the very first thing you do in a union campaign. You sit down with your organizing committee, take out pen and paper, and literally map it out. You draw a physical map of the workplace: where are the entrances, exits, break rooms, supervisor offices. Essentially, ‘where is it safe to have a union conversation.’ Then you draw another physical chart of your coworkers. You sort out who is union-friendly, openly hostile to unions, or somewhere in the middle, and then you plan out very deliberately and carefully who talks to whom and in what order.
Consider: If Vocally Leftist Jane walks up to Conservative David and says "hey what do you think about unions," David is going to shut down immediately. He's not inclined to listen to Jane. But if Jane talks to Moderate Jason and brings him into the fold, then Jason is a far more effective strategic choice to talk to David, and David may actually hear him out without an instant reaction.
IMPORTANT CAVEAT: If Conservative David turns out to be Alt-Right David, and could be dangerous to follow organizers, we write him off. We are not trying to reach Alt-Right David. We are trying to reach Conservative David, who may actually be persuaded to find solidarity with other employees as fellow workers. Jason is a safe scout to find out which one he is. It does no one any good if Leftist Jane (or even Moderate Jane who is a visible minority) talks to Alt-Right David and puts herself on his radar. Not only has she done nothing to convince Alt-Right David to join a union - she's probably actively turned him against the idea - but now she's also in danger and the entire campaign is at risk. NOBODY WANTS THIS. Jane was NOT a hero for doing this. The organizing committee was foolish and enacted a terrible strategy to everyone's detriment.
Where you can make a difference is with people who will listen to you. You having a conversation with your well-meaning but clueless Centrist Democrat Auntie, and maybe gently helping her understand some things the media has been glossing over, is way more strategically useful than you marching up to MAGA Neighbour You've Met Once and trying to "build community" or "understand" them. They don't care. They're impervious, dangerous, and cruel. But maybe your beloved auntie will think about what you said, and then talk to her friend Anna who IDs as "fiscally conservative" but didn't vote because she can't bring herself to get on board with Trump. Then perhaps Anna talks to her brother Nic who has MAGA leanings but isn't all the way there yet. Proto-MAGA Nic would not have listened to you, nor would he have listened to Centrist Democrat Auntie, but he might absorb some of what his sister is saying.
This is not a cop-out or an echo chamber. This is you spending your time and energy strategically and safely. You are not a useful activist to anyone if you’re dead. Anyone who is telling you to hurl yourself directly at MAGA assholes like cannon fodder has no understanding of the strategy behind community building, and you should feel comfortable writing them off.
Last point: If you are tired, emotionally devastated, and/or in danger: take a break. This post is for people who would feel better jumping into action, not for people who are too overwhelmed to even think about it right now. You are worth so much even if you’re not actively Doing Activism, and your rest is worth more than “a break period so you can recharge and Do More Activism.” We all deserve the individual dignity of being worthy of comfort, rest & safety just on the basis of being human, outside of whatever we're doing for others' benefit. To deny ourselves that dignity is to devalue ourselves, and that’s the absolute last thing any of us should be doing right now.

Another very fascinating perspective on the TikTok ban, and likely the reason why democrats were not trying to genuinely stop the ban either. Things to consider moving forward.
The TikTok ban has nothing to do with China, and everything to do with Israel.

The ban on TikTok and Zuckerberg coming out as a Maga follower made me log on to my Tumblr after 7 years. I haven’t used the platform in over a decade. I remember being on here when I was 15. Since I was last here the founder of Tumblr, David Karp, has gone on to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to Planned Parenthood.
We desperately need good people, who believe in supporting the rights of women, bipoc and lgbqtia+ people running their own social media. We cannot safely organize, protest, befriend or empower and protect one another without neutral or safe spaces on the internet.
Meta has become a creeping fascist conglomerate on the internet. Zuckerberg has our most precious photos, memories, posts, to be read lists, family contacts and our private messages on his apps and sites. TikTok is going to be the next conquest. They are selling our data, they are taking our social media.
Long live Tumblr and the people who are coming here to protest against the TikTok ban, but most importantly, to also support the apps like this that are being democratically run. Even back in the day Tumblr was targeted by extremism trying to do mass posts to get us out of here. But we are back and stronger than ever.

can’t believe tiktok is actually getting banned, twitter is infested with bots and brainworm-infested musk bots, facebook is king of QAnon, instagram caught the plague from facebook and is dying a slow death in real time… and as the dust settles… only Miss Tumblr is left standing… failing upwards once again
