"The ones who run around and clean up everyone's mess... Our friends, I guess." Friends is still a relatively new concept to him given that he spent 70 years without them ... Or even being aware of the concept. "Y'know the ones that fix the mess that people like us make."

However what's even weird than thinking he has friends is the idea that he's opening up to someone he doesn't 100% trust. Some would call that progress; he calls it a disaster waiting to happen. But he can't stop himself, the words just tumble out when Jess is around. It's complicated and Bucky tries not to do complicated because that's when mistakes are made and people get hurt.

"I think if we hadn't ended up with this lot, SHIELD would've... Well we wouldn't be here that's for sure." It was all down to luck really, again something that Bucky's not exactly keen on. It's hard to regain control when there's nothing to hold onto; which is exactly what his life feels like at the moment. "I'm glad it happened and all, but it just makes it hard to be angry cause you should be grateful for what you've got."

"Oh ha, ha, ha." He rolls his eyes and barely lets out a chuckle. "It's not like there's much of an age difference. Now the difference between beauty... That's much more obvious." He smirks, but he sighs as he turns to look out the window and watch the storm.

He use to love weather like this; it's such a great cover for missions. But now all it does is fuck with his head and he hates it. All it does is remind him of the times when he'd be out there to pull the trigger and end someone's life; ruin a family, and in some cases, make the world so much worse off.

"Do you ever wonder what life would be like if it wasn't the 'good guys' that found you?" Bucky asks quietly. He can't say for certain, but if Steve hadn't found and recognised him, he has a feeling SHIELD would've been just as bad as HYDRA. They're all the same really, just with different political agendas.

"Sleep is for the weak," Bucky tells her, and as an afterthought, mutters, "And we will never rest, 'til we're all fucking dead."

Part of his 'rehabilitation program' was to become more familiar with the 21st Century and since then he's found himself quoting random lyrics at the most awkward times. Still, he'd managed to keep his therapist talking about rehabilitation into the 21st Century for the last few weeks, rather than focusing on the real issues; even if his therapist didn't approve of the way he was using it for some freelance jobs.

The slight jump from the unexpected touch of Jess' fingers could easily be passed off as a reaction to the sudden flash of lightening and boom of thunder that just happened. He almost had not reacting down to a tee, but in this more... intimate situation... he is still fighting the urge not to grab his knife.

Especially with Jess.

Even though he hates himself for thinking this way, he's still a little on edge with Jess. But he's willing to work through it and ignore his instincts. After all, he did get himself into a lot of shit to bring her home. It'd be a shame to waste it all now with doubts.

"Nah, I wouldn't have. Now if someone comes to murder me in my sleep, I've got you as a human shield."

[Text: Jess] The gun's on the other side of the bed and I'm too lazy to get it. You would've had a lamp thrown at your head.

[Text: Jess] Keeping me up all night's not exactly a threat, especially if it's in a good way.

In all truthfulness, he hadn't slept with a gun beside him in awhile. After the HYDRA incident he had a particularly bad nightmare which resulted in shots being fired and a few bullet holes in his walls. He was strictly a knife only guy now when it came to bed.

But expectations had to be upheld, and no one needed to know about his little gun incident.

By the time Jess gets into his bedroom, he's moved over to give her space and is staring out the window, watching the rain fall. He can see down to the streets of Manhattan, and it leaves an uneasy feeling in his stomach. It's a stupid fear, but he deals with it.

"Y'know, coming into my room doesn't magically make the storm disappear," Bucky tells her. He moves so that he's lying on his back and sighs softly. "But I suppose it makes it a little better."

[text to:Bucky] I’m coming to curl up in your bed. Don’t shoot me when I open your bedroom door. [text to:Bucky] And if you make a single joke about being afraid of storms I’ll keep you up the entire night.

In all truth, it was the rain that woke her up. A bird (or whatever else floated up that high in the air during a Manhattan storm) had skittered across the floor-to-ceiling window and pulled her sharply from her already tentative sleep. She hadn’t had a nightmare in a solid week, an accomplishment in itself, but her habits were ingrained deep and sleeping with both ears open was too much for her to shake yet.

Maybe it was for the better. She did owe Bucky a proper thank-you and apology.

So with her goal already in mind she rolled herself from bed, swapping her sleep shirt for a tank top and a nude strip of lace that was arguably something that could be marketed as ‘underwear’ before padding off down the hall, phone in hand. He was on the opposite side of the floor where Tasha’s room was, so Jess got a small tinge of the cinnamon that lingered in their resident Alpha’s skin, and she brushed her shoulder on the door frame when she passed out of a random impulse. Maybe she’ll come join us in the morning.

For now, Bucky was hers. She’d texted him a warning but that didn’t mean he’d seen it, so when she opened the bedroom door it was swift but quiet and she closed it behind herself with only a whisper of sliding metal as the strike plate slid back into place. Slipping into his bed was quick and practiced from doing it in multiple stages of rush, and since he was already facing the windows (and away from her, so there wasn’t any way to tell if he was awake) she took up the empty space behind him to press into his back while she wound her arms carefully around his waist.
