Asking here because your RWBY blog's asks are off; Out of your AUs, which is/are your favorite?
Wait my asks are off there?? I need to change that pronto!!
But my main favorite AU is probably criminal!Oscar. Masky and I put a lot of time into that one and I’ve gotten rather attached to Oscar and his dad, Roman.
Alternately, I do love my RWBY Wildcard AU, which is a persona AU where the wildcard power is similar to maiden power though not as all-powerful. But I don’t talk about that one too much lol

I don’t have any real explanations for the lamp or if they end up keeping it in the end because that’s a huuuuge diverge from canon that I haven’t quite yet orchestrated.
Oscar’s semblance is a bit like a speed boost in the sense that he has control over wind currents. It allows him to speed himself up or slow himself down, or even flip himself around. It lets him boost airflow around him without even needing to really focus. He does tend to extend it for boosts when he jumps. Large usages like defensively blowing someone away takes a lot of energy.
Oscar... he doesn’t really like Emerald and Mercury. They make life difficult for his father in more ways than one, and he sees them more as a significant annoyance. Not that he’s really interacted with them too much... Roman doesn’t really like getting Oscar wrapped up in all this.
*sees Criminal Oscar AU* I... Omg thank you for this good feast... Bless... Bless this small family of troublemakers. Okay a few questions if you don't mind, does Oscar ever develop a semblance and how does he feel about other villains like Emerald and Mercury? Also after they are all reunited in Atlas does Neo join the heroes?
for how he feels about Mercury n Emerald, i call in @rexidot to answer that since they mostly write for Oscar and idk how he’d feel about em!! so that one’s all urs babe!
he DOES get his Semblance! once again, @rexidot came up with the idea n such. Oscar’s Semblance is Wind Manipulation! he’s able to make massive gusts of wind, or control the wind around him to move as he pleases! he mostly uses it to give himself a speed boost when running, or to push people away defensively.
Neo DOES end up joining the good guys for the rest of the story, mostly to stay close to Roman and to spite Cinder in the process. idk if they’d still get the Lamp or not??? but either way, Neo doesn’t get Cinder the Lamp, Cinder’s left with someone else stabbing her in the back, and now the squad has a whole crime family on their side!! its pretty great.

alright with that lovely post i just reblogged fresh on my mind, i shall offer yall lovingly mine and @rexidot‘s Criminal Oscar AU because u know what we went in on this one and i got feelings.
first i offer Oscar’s design ( @rexidot gave me what they wanted added and i just built on it from there. thank them for those tasty boots ;3c)
Tumblr media
taking inspiration from both Neo n Roman (with Neo’s coattails and Roman’s scarf), Oscar ended up modeling himself in such a way that he resembles his parents in appearance. he takes a bit more after Roman with the bangs over the eye (that literally are there for appearance only he has no eye problems he’s just mimicking Roman), but the whole thing is still there. Oscar takes after his parents very much.
he also wears a mask when on missions, to hide his identity a lil more securely!
Tumblr media
now onto more backstory related things! be warned this is gonna get REALLY long cause there’s kind of a lot to go over.
- Oscar was taken away from his family as a child, no older then 4, having been carried off his farm during a Grimm attack by a Grimm itself. Oscar, somehow, by sheer luck, survives this event and manages to squirm his way out of the Grimm’s talons. the grip on his shoulders dislocated one, and the fall ended up breaking his leg. what was worse was that he was left in this condition for quite some time, a good few days, as people would either turn a blind eye or offer nothing but stares full of pity. no one would help him. no one tried to save him. Oscar was alone.
- it was pure coincidence that Roman happened to run across Oscar one night on a walk to clear his head. Roman isn’t a complete stranger to the alleyways of Vale, but finding a whole child back there sniveling and bruised and bloodied wasn’t what you’d usually find back there. for once in his life, Roman felt something he only thought he’d feel for Neo. He felt empathy. Because he’s been in this position before. Pained and aching and alone, with no one willing to help.
- after a little back and forth, Roman ends up carrying Oscar back to the warehouse he and Neo turned into their home (safer then just renting out an apartment under a fake name, in Roman’s opinion. cheaper, too.) to fix him up best he can with the, albeit not all that limited, medical knowledge he has. (he’s patched up himself and Neo so many times to avoid doctors visits. setting a leg and putting a shoulder back in its socket? easy as possible.)
- there was a bit of disagreement between Roman and Neo on what to do with the kid after Oscar fell asleep once his wounds were properly wrapped and cleaned with the best they had. Neo never wanted kids, so having a sudden child here throws her off. Roman’s the same way, but he swears up and down that once the kid’s healed over and ready to go, they’ll send him on his way. maybe to some orphanage or something. either way, he won’t be their problem for long.
- So for awhile, with Oscar on bedrest, that was the mentality they had. the kid won’t be here long so don’t get attached. Roman called him “kid” to avoid that, even after learning his name. you name it, you get attached, just like a pet.
- Of course, Oscar’s bedrest took much longer then expected, nearly a full month really with the extent of his injuries. by the time he was deemed ready to leave the nest, Roman and Neo felt…connected to him. Oscar had become a small part of their small family now, and they didn’t want him leaving easy. So, Oscar became part of their little family, keeping his name and signing no papers. it was merely in word and feeling.
- Oscar started training after that, with Roman and Neo wanting him to know how to defend himself. He was taught early on that the world doesn’t care who you are, or what you do, it will hurt you and beat you and destroy you all the same. Roman and Neo fight to survive, and if Oscar wants to live, wants to stand beside them instead of taken away by some accident that could easily happen because of their status as criminals, he has to fight to survive as well.
- Oscar was given a training staff to start with, and eventually designed and helped develop his own weapon, named Fidelis Nocturne (named by @rexidot ). training wasnt easy. not by a long shot. Oscar was bruised and aching by the end of each match between Roman, Neo, or both at once. his aura was awakened early so they could both truly go in on him, as much as they could to a child. eventually, Oscar grew used to the sudden training sessions and quick jabs he was meant to deflect. always be on guard, that was his first lesson, and it’s one he will take to his grave.
- Even with all this training and being essentially crafted into the criminal world, Oscar is very much loved by Roman and Neo. He’s their son, regardless of by blood or how a real family should act. This was their family, their home, and they won’t let that stop them anytime soon. Love is a weakness, and if people find it they will use that against you, which is why all affections and gentleness is in complete private. it’s not ideal, but its theirs. It’s Oscar’s. And that’s all he cares about.
- Oscar DOES get Ozpin in this AU! In fact, Oscar is introduced very early on as the masked figure that helps Roman and Neo with their schemes. He’s there during the train heist episode in Mountain Glenn, that’s how early he’s part of this AU and introduced to the main squad.
- He was ALSO there during the ship fight in the last episode of volume 3. You can only imagine how angry, how sad, how horrified Oscar was when he watched not one, but both of his parents essentially die in front of him. With Neo flying off the ship, and Roman getting carried away by a Griffin (NOT eaten. i need to emphasize this.) Once the ship crashed, and Oscar was released safely save for some cuts and scrapes, having kicked Ruby off the ship in a bout of anger, Oscar sat there and cried and screamed because he’s back to being alone again. all because of Cinder. SHE released the Grimm, SHE made the orders, this was HER fault. but blame can’t not fall to Red as well. She knocked Neo off the ship. She caused the commotion that made Roman so emotional, so distraught, so distressed and negative that a Griffin quite literally stole him away never to be seen again.
- Oscar was alone again…and that’s just cruel.
- until he felt a strange feeling like he was being watched. It was in Junior’s bar, with Oscar quietly sipping a glass of milk (the strong stuff, as requested), that he heard a voice in the back of his head, introducing himself as Professor Ozpin.
- …really it shouldn’t be a surprise he flung his milk across the entire table when he jumped in shock. shouldn’t be even more of a surprise that Oscar didn’t believe a damn word this voice was saying.
- However, it was all true. This was Professor Ozpin, headmaster of Beacon Academy, now living in his head rent free. like an asshole. It took a lot of convincing to get Oscar to agree to leave for Mistral, but Ozpin managed to ask a single question that sparked Oscar’s need to move.
“If you choose to stay here then what will you do? You have no plans, no schemes…and you found no bodies.” Oscar swears he feels a warmth on his shoulder. As if someone holds him there. “It’s possible they are still alive, Oscar. Perhaps my needs will line up with yours. Perhaps…”
Oscar’s stomach tightens.
“…we could find your parents.”
- So, Oscar agreed to go off to Mistral and find this mystery man, Qrow Branwen, as requested. Really, he didn’t have anything better to do, and as much as he hated to admit it, he was holding out hope that maybe he’ll find Roman or Neo at some point. It’s hard to just…accept that your parents are dead, after all.
- Oscar lost his tailcoats and scarf during the accident, and with his mask shattered because of the crash, he had no way of hiding his identity. so, he put on the appearance of an innocent farmboy when he was forced to meet the rest of the crew, introducing himself first as Professor Ozpin and then later at “Oscar”. Just Oscar. Explaining that he used to live on a farm (true) but that he just felt unsatisfied there (false) so he agreed to Ozpin’s journey because he, quite literally, had nothing better to do. (true!)
- Oscar does NOT like Ruby. He doesn’t trust her, doesnt TRY to trust her, and at no point does he ever try to befriend her. this is still Red. still the girl who flung his mother overboard. still the girl who was the source of his fathers distress that caused him to get carried off by a fucking Grimm. then again, Oscar doesn’t exactly trust the rest of the group either. he’s there because he needs to be there. being with this little gaggle of heroes will help his standing and get him in and out of places easier. so, he sticks around.
- Oscar fights just like his mother and father. he fights well, and he fights dirty. Oscar will kick, scream, even bite to win if he has to. He will take the most underhanded shots possible. In the battle at Haven, Oscar absolutely ends up biting Leo so hard he has to spit out blood when he lands. When fighting with Hazel, it’s less of a “this isn’t your fight” and more of a “this is my fight and I choose how to fight it” between him and Ozpin.
- At the Burnswick farm, Oscar really couldn’t care less for the reveal of Ozpin’s whole backstory. Hell, even with Salem being revealed as immortal he couldn’t care less. It’s…strange to have to fight a losing battle, but he’s fought worse situations before. It’s Qrow punching Ozpin, and subsequently Oscar himself, that nearly makes him blow his whole “innocent farmboy” cover. Stil, he manages to keep it up for now.
- Most plotpoints end up the same, until we reach the Cotta-Arc house and the whole fight between Oscar and Jaune happens. When Jaune pins Oscar to the wall, Oscar ends up whipping out Fidelis Nocturne and pressing the barrel under his chin, fully prepared to shoot if Jaune tries anything else. THAT is how Ruby realizes who Oscar is, and it’s what prompts him to run away. Ozpin isn’t here, he’s lost all trust with those stupid tryhard heroes who he was…actually starting to grow attached to, and he hasn’t seen hide or hair of his parents. He’s alone again…
- It’s around this time that he actually finds Roman again, parallel to their first meeting, seeing his father in an alleyway beaten and bloodied trying to light a half finished cigar. the reunion is teary, with Oscar sobbing into Roman’s chest and Roman simply offering his arms and holding Oscar as tight as he can because oh god his baby he thought he was gone forever, but it’s a reunion much the same. Oscar doesn’t feel as alone anymore with his fathers return.
- They end up returning to the Cotta-Arc house together, with the others thankfully having gone out to try and search for Oscar because at the end of the day, they still need him to have Ozpin and they need Ozpin whenever he gets back. Roman explains that, after the Griffin carried him off, he shot at it until it dropped him, causing him to land pretty far from Beacon, hell he was pretty far from Vale at that point. The fall wasn’t easy, causing his leg to basically become mangled and with his criminal status, he wasn’t exactly safe to just go to a hospital only to have cops waiting outside to arrest him once he was patched up. So he simply began travelling aimlessly in search of some sort of purpose after, supposedly, having his son and lover die on a mission he claimed would be safe for them. Working with Cinder was hell, and eventually he began travelling to try and find her. To hopefully bring peace to his own mind over this.
- By the time Team RWBY and Team JNR return, Oscar has Roman Torchwick on the couch, the two talking about time that’s passed and what Roman’s missed, with Oscar having essentially filled Roman in on the entire story, telling him about Salem, Cinder’s involvement with her (”I knew she was someone’s lacky!” Roman said with a snap of his fingers in distaste. “should’ve looked into that more.”), the Maidens, just…everything he could think of. Ozpin included. By the end, Roman was basically winded by the whole thing but with a little more thinking on it, he slowly mellowed out. Life’s already so goddamn weird after this.
- With Team RWBY+JNR+Qrow’s return, Roman has to essentially make himself as trustworthy as he can to these guys. It took… a lot of convincing to finally get them to stop making him stare down the sharp end of a rapier, or the barrel of a gun, but somehow, eventually, both he and Oscar manage to at least make themselves as “trustworthy” as they can. It helps especially that Roman has stolen Atlas equipment before, so he could EASILY steal them a ship and get them into Atlas without having to get around Cordovin.
- This causes the Cordovin fight to still happen, but on different terms, with Cordovin wanting to take down these terrible thieves who decided to steal Atlas equipment n stuff. It’s less of a show off kinda thing, but still sorta is cause its Cordovin and she still uses the whole giant mech. Roman, despite his leg, ends up piloting (cause he’s flown other ships and even worked in a giant mech before, he can fly a ship easy.) instead of Maria, making her take the passenger seat to backtalk Cordovin the whole time while Oscar actually joins the others on the ground to fight properly.
- I will say this, Roman develops a new found sense of respect for Ruby after seeing her during that whole fight. She really did just take down a whole giant monster mech AND a massive Grimm. She’s stronger then he thought, and she’s grown overtime. He can respect that.
- It’s the ride to Atlas that gets the group more trusting of Roman, as he ends up needing a break from piloting so he swaps with Maria to sit with the others in the back, or rather just with Oscar. Oscar ends up falling asleep on his shoulder, so Roman shrugs off his coat and drapes it over his shoulders to let him sleep a little easier. That’s when someone, most likely Ruby or maybe even Weiss, asks what their whole deal is. Roman tells them how he found Oscar one day, hurt and alone, and after awhile he just…melded into part of the family. All they’re missing now is Neo, and they’ll be whole again.
- Ruby does feel a little guilty about…well, everything. To her knowledge, she’s the reason Neo’s dead, and she’s the reason Roman’s injured and that Oscar’s just so bitter over her. It gets a lil easier but still, there will always be that awkwardness.
- The meeting in Atlas is…strange, to say the least. The only real face the Ace Ops know properly is Roman’s, so him being arrested makes MUCH more sense. He was the last to be uncuffed and even then he was watched like a hawk. Oscar holds a grudge against Ironwood for arresting his dad n stuff, so he’s not happy about being here. Neither is Roman, but he takes it a lil better then Oscar, who takes any chance he gets to glare at Ironwood.
- Roman actually ends up getting a prosthetic in this AU, since his leg had gone so long without actually being fixed that even surgery wouldn’t be able to fix it. Either Roman lives with the lame fucked up leg, or he get it removed entirely. He wasn’t paying for it, so he chose the ladder, with Ironwood stating that this would be beneficial to all parties involved so no one gets dragged behind. Roman was this close to shooting this man.
- When Roman was recovered, he and Oscar did A LOT more training then they did before. Oscar didn’t feel as bad at going all out on Roman now, so the two really dug into each other. Roman still won, but for once, Oscar got really close to beating him. Roman comments on that and, without caring much for the others watching, tells him that he’s proud of him. It’s a small scene meant to show that both Roman feels safer here then he did before by displaying affection clearly regardless of an audience, and that Roman and Oscar are still family at the end of the day, regardless of what’s happened and what IS happening currently. They have each other, and that’s all they need, even if they’ve grown a lot without each other.
- Roman, Oscar, and Neo do end up reuniting in Atlas. I’d say it’s when Oscar n Neo do the whole Lamp thing, with Roman staying behind to act as extra firepower in case anyone does come. Plus, he doesn’t really like leaving Oscar alone after just reuniting with him again. Neo ends up breaking into the room and it’s just a stand off between herself, Oscar who’s armed with Fidelis Nocturne, and Roman who’s got Melodic Cudgel ready to go. It doesn’t come down to trading blows, as Neo practically plants herself in Roman’s chest and yanks Oscar in as well, the three finally reuniting fully and becoming a real family again.
AND THATS ALL WE GOT SO FAR! idk what else to add rn but if yall got questions definitely yeet em at either me or @rexidot cause god only knows how much time and effort we’ve put into this au. we care very much for our baby and thats just the facts.
