a close look at shapes in promare

one of the first things we see in the opening credits is this. a series of rectangles pushing from the outside onto an equilateral triangle, crushing and bending it out of shape but never making it a rectangle. it’s violent.

and its made pretty clear from the start that the triangle is used to represent the burnish,

it is used by their oppressors on their signs, but worn primarily as a symbol of burnish independence. worn proudly in protest

which brings us to the obvious rectangles.

promepolis. everything is made up of rectangles, any triangle you’ll find is a right angle triangle, fitting perfectly into a square or rectangle without problem.

it’s no question that promepolis is a hostile environment toward the burnish, you’ve seen the movie. but the shapes used reflect this as well as the script.

krays (and by extension, promepolis’) whole thing is being Exclusively rectangular– anything else and you know for certain, immediately, that that person is “other,” in this case, burnish. life in promepolis is so rigidly rectangular for the express purpose of singling those who never will be perfectly rectangular out.

on top of being a figurative anti-burnish symbol, the rectangle is also used in freeze force’s anti-burnish restraints and all ice based technology. it is a physical symbol of the way burnish are treated if found. and because of the way promepolis is built and run, being found is not hard.

the whole city, from how many fire hydrants there are on a block to the perfect 90 degree angles everywhere, is designed to be unsafe for burnish people, and to remind them constantly of how unsafe it is. but I don’t need to tell you that.

however, that’s not where the rectangles and triangles stop, because we can’t go into shapes symbolism in this movie without talking about the lens flares.

the square lens flares are hard to miss, and easy to dismiss as a stylistic choice. but they’re not the only lens flares here.

the square lens flares are most prominent throughout the movie because they represent kray’s influence. he affects the light under which people see each other.

“If I did something wrong, they’d think I’m abusing our connection and misusing his authority.”

take this scene. even outside of the city, alone with aina on that frozen lake, kray is holding power over galo’s actions. and this is reflected in the visuals.

as mentioned before, thats not the only shape the lens flares take. in moments of burnish empowerment, they are triangular, the shape representing the burnish.

and I’m sure some of you have heard this much already, so I won’t drag that on too much longer.

what stands out to me is the introduction of a new motif: the circle

this is first seen in prometh’s lab, and then the deus x machina, and it shows us something quite different from the rest of the movie. a shape that, if we were to mirror the bit from the opening credits with, fits all rectangles and triangles and any other shape inside it without damaging/bending any of them.

and at the end, the lens flares are circles. for the first time, totally normal lens flares. at the end, the burnish are free from the fight for their rights, as there aren’t any promare anymore. non burnish in promepolis and beyond it are separated from krays ideals. kray himself is disgraced.

and theres room for the triangles in the circles, without a need to change.

right, expansion of my “bolin is an insanely good earthbender”

bolin is an earthbender of legendary skill and the thing is– he doesn’t even realise it because for some reason no one in the show points it out??

lets start with his earthbending education or rather his lack there of. there is very little indication that bolin is anything but a self-taught earthbender, he and mako grew up on the streets which never really gave them the opportunity or money to have a formal education in such things, meaning bolin had to create his own way of bending, a way to help him on the streets and in the pro-bending arena– even toph was taught by the badgermoles but living in the city, bolin didn’t have that.

look at those flips!! i’ve never seen earthbending like it before!! bolin’s way of bending is uniquely his and i don’t see anyone else move like him.

quickly looking at metalbending, i think it’s his lack of formal training that makes it so hard for bolin.

his entire life, bolin has had to be adaptable. this completely goes against earthbending in its traditional sense. everyone we know to be a metalbender, even the nameless republic city policemen, have been trained in traditional earthbending. as stated before, bolin never had that and i don’t think it detracts at all from his skills as a whole. i do like reading fics where he learns how to metalbend but i liked that he didn’t in the actual series.

onto the next point, bolin has also managed to teach himself how to earthbend without touching the ground. watching atla and lok this seems to be quite a rare talent but this just tells us that bolin is incredibly sensitive to his element which is!! amazing!!

you can see this elemental intuition in other scenes as well, particularly in fights, but for bolin the earth just seems to jump to his command

he’s an incredibly fast bender, able to pull earth from the ground and form barriers in seconds– and not just pebbles, these are boulders and huge slabs of earth

the only time we see bolin have to take a moment before bending is when he topples the skyscraper in the finale of season 4

and when it comes to lavabending??

bolin is a way better lavabender than ghazan and that is the hill i will die on

ghazan seems to have this “start-up” stance that he does before bending large quantities of lava which slows him down a few seconds. bolin? he can lavabend pretty much instantaneously

here, ghazan only lavabends enough to weaken the bottom of the wall of ba sing se which you could argue is all he needed to do but if we look at bolin, he can lavabend more lava and do it much quicker– even without his hands!! as shown in the first gif below

and this is a talent that very, very few people have. it’s not like bolin had a teacher to help him, he had to master a very volatile and dangerous skill by himself, and he did!! in just 3 years!! can you imagine?!?!?

and not only is he an incredibly skilled bender, he also has a heart of gold

given the opportunity to escape, bolin instead goes back to save the people who threatened him into helping them (granted they were well within their rights to do so but ya know) and bends the lava with ease. its not hard to find more examples of his loyalty and devotion to his friends and even strangers. he’s compassionate, optimistic and a veritable badass!!

i just wish he’d gotten more recognition for his talents instead of constantly playing the role of comic relief.

it wasn’t just the fact that she was gender-swapped that made her reveal so surprising, but her whole vibe made her villainy reveal so much more shocking because the combination of her wrinkles, her crows feet, her soft smile, her wacky hair, her huge nerdy glasses, and her general appearance as a punk Ms Frizzle remix, it was all the more extraordinary that this well established spiderveser villain didn’t immediately look like a villain, and yet when she revealed her identity it was so obvious, completely subverting our standards for what ‘villainy’ is, so when the tentacles came out of this kind-looking lesbotic sex symbol, we all just went

they got us. the art and design team played us like a violin in a Niccolò Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in B Minor and we ain’t even mad

I love the difference in podcast naming conventions because it goes from like

1. Magnus Archives. Named things like ‘Jon’ and ‘Tim’ and ‘Martin’. I love them but those are some bland ass names.

2. Bright Sessions. Named things like ‘Annabelle’ and ‘Damien’ and ‘Rose’. Getting a little less common but still fairly mundane.

3. Penumbra. Named things like ‘Juno Steel’ and ‘Sasha Wire’ and ‘Mick Mercury’. Hey now, getting a little funky!

4. Critical Role. Mollymauk? Jester? Damn these are some cool names, but you’ve still got like. Caleb and Percy.

5. ARE YOU NAMING YOUR GODDAMN WIZARD TAAKO?
