I did this fiction club called ‘Dorado’ artwork for the JC & The Voidz + Rey Pila + Promiseland in Santiago, Chile, and gave it to Beardo cause he fucking rules. The drawing is called ‘Tonight’s the Night’ and it certainly was THE night!

Currently one of Mexico’s rising rock stars, the band Rey Pila recently graced our House of Vans Mexico stage last week, playing songs off their mega-anticipated album The Future Sugar, out on cultrecordsnyc today! Look, I personally know people who love Julian Casablancas and I also know there are those who can’t stand the man, rarely do I come across people who are perfectly content in simply liking him. Personally, I fall into that third camp, in which I appreciate what he’s done with The Strokes, and rock music in general (lest you forget how fucking awful the turn of the century was, with nu-metal and all). But I can completely understand why he has his detractors, some never took to the Strokes, while some point the left-turn the Growlers took on their latest (and Casablancas’ produced) album as enough of reason to feel ill-will.

One reason to like Casablancas might be his harnessing, releasing, and producing of Rey Pila’s latest single “Ninjas.” Yes, the track has a heavy 80′s feel and yes the chorus sounds exactly like every chorus Casablancas has ever touched, but so fucking what, it sounds rad and it’s fun!

The Mexico City based group bring a faux 80′s metal back-beat and juxtapose it with a tactfully deployed synth and one helluva an ear for melody. “Ninjas” is catchy as hell and doesn’t overstay its welcome with its sugary meld of Judas Priest meets The Cars.
