How to start longboard dancing
How to start longboard dancing Are you one of those people who always thought that longboards are for transportation purposes only? Have you ever seen a person who was moving around so smoothly on their board that it made you rethink your point of view on the sport? And maybe try it out yourself? Then this blog will give you some tips to get started and help you to join the exciting world of longboard freestyle/dancing. 1. What is longboard dancing/freestyle? So what is longboard dancing exactly? Longboard dancing is a combination of board control and adding your own style to it. Long carves will lead into these dancing steps. When linking those different movements together you will create different dancing lines. Longboard dancing also involves skateboard tricks like shuv-its, flip tricks and all kinds of different grabs and no-complies. 2. Watching others Watching other people do something is an excellent way to improve your own skills. The easiest way is to ride with someone better than you and ask them for tips along the way. Skating with others will also push you to improve and learn new tricks and dancing steps. When you don’t have anyone to ride with or you want to pick up the sport by yourself, you can use YouTube to improve your riding. YouTube has lots of trick tips and montages of longboards who have been into the sport for many years. 3. Loosen up your trucks The most fundamental step in longboard dancing is being able to carve. Just doing some steps while going straight looks goofy and is even more difficult as well. Dancing while carving is way easier and looks much more fluent. Just get a tool and make sure that your trucks are nice and loose. 4. Listen to music while longboarding Listening to music is a great way to help you create new lines. Dancing on the riddim of the music works great! Your steps will be more fluent and you will look more stylish. An edit with the same song in it will look even more stylish. The music can also help by giving you the energy to keep trying a trick or a line. 5. Create your own style ‘’Tricks deserve applause but style deserves respect’’. This might be the most beautiful thing about the sport because longboard dancing is about freedom and expressing yourself. Every rider has their own style which makes the sport very diverse. Keep in mind that you don’t force style because style comes with experience and practice. Analyzing a montage or video is great for learning new tricks but be sure not to try copy someone’s style because you will never be the best copycat! You can only be the best version of yourself so give it your own touch. 6. Don’t care about what other people think of you Yes, you might look goofy or strange on your board in the beginning and yes you are going to fall a lot but practice makes perfect! It may be strange to go out and practice while there are people walking around and looking at you but that’s normal. Don’t spend to much time thinking about it because it will become easier overtime. Keep longboarding and this ‘’problem’’ will become a positive thing because many people will turn their heads when they notice you cruising down the streets.
I hope that these tips helped you finding your place in the longboard community. The journey you are going to start will be full of adventures and nice people. Enjoy the ride and keep cruising!
